I agree that referees are making all kind of stupid calls now but Scott Stevens was the perfect exemple of a dirty hitter . Wings fan for the past 20 years, and that was an unreal hit. Kozzie showed a lot of heart coming back later in the game. Wish he was still a Wing.
I loved National Hockey Night on ESPN. Gary Thorne and Clement were great but man Thorne routinely got players mixed up. He asked if it was Bob Rouse, because Rouse wore #3 and he saw a 3 on the jersey of the downed player, but Rouse was a slow stay-at-home defenseman, Slava is short and was flying down the left-wing. "Charging" more often than not is called when a player leaves their feet to deliver the hit. Stevens only leaves his feet after he bounces off of poor Slava. And you'll notice none of the Red Wings were doing too much to voice their displeasure about the hit!

Charging usually refers to a hit away from the play.. like seconds after an offensive player already passes the puck. And boarding is hitting a player in a vulnerable position against the boards from behind. Leaving your feet on a hit was a rule put in place during the bettman era. It's either called roughing at the officials jusdgement. Or an unsportsmanlike game misconduct which would result in suspension because intent to injure
