  • who built the city in austrian times all the beautiful buildings? the jews no doubt and in the 40 they were murdered. the jews were 50 % of the population before the 2 war. toay there are no sinagoges in the city!

  • There is a GOD:D

  • thanks for this beautiful video

  • Does Lubov Baranova still live there?

  • judgeing after this images cernauti looks very much like timisoara in western romania- an city also rebuild by the austrians...but i most remarc that timisoara is much beautiful than cernauti(as architecture and all), but also liov looks better than timisoara(as architecture)

  • OK. If you want that I say you that Chernivtsi was a Romanian city, I can do it (as soon as I can say this to a crazy man). With your judgment, cities in Romanian were influenced by Slavic culture, so we could say that this cities are Slavics and not Romanians. In Ukraine we can say that there are cities influenced by Romanian culture, and say that in Romania there are cities influenced by Slavic culture (including Ukrainian). So, what? Bye!

  • Cernauti is a romanian name coming from the verb ' cerne'... the ukrainian name is just adapted in ukrainian having its origins in the romanian 'cernauti' which is the original name of the city. what does 'chernivtsy' and its other forms mean in ukrainian?

  • Hello. Reading old comments I saw that I never answered you. Chernivtsi in Ukrainian means "Black Sheeps". In modern Ukrainian "чорний" (chornyi) means "black" and "вівця" (vivtsia) means "sheep".

  • but is also a pleasant large town and there is place for all...so: let it be understanding between friendly nations!

  • i wish that u take this comment as a veridic hystorical conclusion: the north of bucovina was a core province of the romanians-and romanian as origin and romanian till the recent times-but now is ucrainean(as part of ucraine,it's population and new culture)...but we do not know for howlong...

  • The history is not unique. This comment is your veridical historical conclusion. Bye!

  • i pesonally don't think that that's fair(because the north of bucovina is now mostly ucrainean and they have the right to remain with their fellow people)...but i repeat that it's very probably that in the future this area may be again romanian...so no one must feel granted with this status -quo

  • do not forges that cernauti was first a romanian small merchant town, after a german and even jewesh town, then romanian once again, but now is ucrainean...judgeing it's history it might became romanian once again in the near or far future...history is ciclic

  • only after the second war 2 the romanian turned almost extinct in northern bucovina because of the stalinist persecutions and masive dislocations of populations...many and many ucraineans, russians and some other wore brougt here and other many romanians wore tooked from northern bucovina and brougt to some other distant places!

  • even in 1918 after about 150 years of habsburgic domination...about 70% of the population of bucovina was romanian, who was most founded in villages...because in cernauti(chernovtsy) thanks to the priviligies of the habsburgs the population was mainly german and jew)

  • the ruthenians along with germans, jews, poles wore brought in bucovina after 1775 by the austrian rulers who wanted to diminushed the procentage of romanians in that area(by asimilian and deznationalization)=austrian wanted that the native people(and even the "settlers" to get deznationalized, using even the church: greco catholicism to gight romanian and ruthenian orthodox)

  • if you haven't knew...till the end of the 18th century about 2/3 of the population in the teritory between Nistru(Dnistr) and Bug was romanian(it wasn't part of the principat/voievodat of Moldova(Moldavia))

  • this not means that the population in those areas of romania was bulgarian!!!...same with the hungarion ocupation of transylvania!

  • that's a miss judgeing saying that northern bucovina was ukrainean(in now'our days that's true-judgeing by the ethny of the population...i'll say latter way). i've read a comment saying that since the middle-ages bucovina(the north of it especially) was ruthenian as culture and population...but that's not true! for e.g. even a large part of now'our days romania was part in the dark ages of the first(and even the second) bulgarian tzarat

  • You can´t say that Ukrainians don´t exist and they are Russians. Using your judgment I can say "The Romanians don´t exist. The Romanians are Frenchs, Italians, Spanishs or Portugueses. There aren´t differences between them" But I can´t say it, because I admire Romania and its wonderful people. You say that Ukrainians don´t exist because you know nothing about Ukraine, Ukrainian people, Ukrainian language and Ukraine´s history!!

  • The Slavic name came into official use in 1775, but the Slavic name was used during 880-1349!!!!

In the XIV the territory was annexed by Moldavia, but the territory was Slavic. The nobility was Romanian, but the peasantry was Slavic, Ukrainian!!! The Ukrainian peasantry worked and the Romanian nobility ate!!!

  • Think about it:

    Principality of Moldavia (1346-1862)

Principality of Kiev (Київська Русь) (880- 1240)

    Principality of Halych-Volyn (Галицько-Волинське князівство) (1199-1349).

Do you understand what it means? The Slavic States were previous to Moldavia!!!

  • Again: You say that Romanian people are eastern Latin. OK. "Ţara de Sus" was the Romanian name, during the Principality of Moldavia (1346-1862). But Bukovyna (the territory whith Slavic name and inhabited by Slavic people) was a Kiev´s vassal State!!! And later it was a Halych-Volyn´s vassal state too!!!

  • I know that you are Latin people and in your language you have slavic names. If you say that Bukovyna is a Slavic name, why did you say that Bukovyna is a Romanian name? Why? It isn´t true. Think about it: if these territories have Slavic names; it is because this territories were inhabited by Slavic peoples!!!

  • kkkk Bucovina is Ukranian !! but not Ukranian land !!! remember this

  • we are The real Dacians !! had you hered of the proces called Romanisation? you didnt !!

  • Romanians lived in this part 3000 years ago , when ukrainians and russians didn t existed !! Rumanians are : DACIANS , ROMANS ,SLAVS !! our ancestors are dacians !!

  • The Slavs were one of the Ukrainains´ ancestors, my friend. And with your criterion or discernment Ukrainians are SLAVS, DACIANS and ROMANS too. 3000 years ago were Dacians, who were not Romanians.

You wrote "Rumanians are : DACIANS , ROMANS ,SLAVS !!" SLAVS!!!; Do you understand what did you write? SLAVS!!!!

  • Мой любимый город!!!!Я там родилась,жила,а теперь уехала!!!!Хочю домой.........я так скучаю за всеми улочками площядями стадионами.......все еду домой...................

  • iff you dont know history , just read !!! Hotin is Romanian fortress , like all Bucovina!! it is far to be a ukranian land , because it was concured by Russinas , in fact not even concured by them!!Ukrainians didnt concure it !! it isnt yours !!

  • In fact this land is not Romanian either. Indeed it is Austrian. Austrians contributed to this land mostly. They are responsible for beauty we presently have, So hats-off to Austria

  • YOU GOT A PIC OF MY GRANDMAS STREET!!! Lol

  • Lol i was born there!!! AND Ive like been in all of those places!!!!!!

  • Cernauti si nu Cernovtsy !!! This is romanian city !!! Bucovina is romanian !! Cernauti was and alvais will be romanian !!!

  • It's not Romanian city, but Austrian. Austrians built it, developed and brought in culture. Your compatriots built many buildings too, but they are far way less beautiful than Austrian ones. However they were better than Soviet ones. Russia (USSR) was a biggest trouble for our city. But thanks God they have gone.

Romania will NEVER get it back because there is treaty which guarantees Ukraine sovereignity over Bucovina

  • This city is what it is. I am romanian and was born and raised there. This is a unique place where you can find a blend of really awsome people that you will not find in other place, not even Romania...

  • My partner has an apartment there....I love

    Krasnoarmeyskiy Market.

    Espescially the buther shop.!!!!!

and the Caviar and the vodka.

The Centrum is fun as well.

  • kalsna.ya toje iz chernavtov i prosta abaiaiu etot gorod............

  • born there -- raised in a viilage on the outskirts - voloka -- was there last year -- awesome!!!

  • Розвивайся і квітуй рідне місто!!!

  • A wonderful city. I visited it two years ago. There is nothing to do there except watching architectural pieces-of-art embodied in old Austrian and Romanian buildings. Russian communists have left nothing interesting, but ugly boxes.

  • Гарно зроблено! Чернівці - супер місто!

  • Ich liebe Tchernowitz. Das ist die wunderschoene Stadt.

I was born there but it is not the reason why I love it. It's just beautiful and charming. I also love Prague, Vienna, Paris and l'viv

  • Yes! You are right! Chernivtsi is super. Aber was mich betrifft, ich liebe Vienna und besonders Salzburg viel mehr!!!I was born in Chernivtsi region. Aber momentan wohne ich in der USA.
