I wish Tommy would have shown the same respect for Purple as they did to him on this song. He was an extremely talented guitarist who did not make the most of his gift due to his drug addiction. He could have been an all time great instead there are too many people who are not aware of how good he was when not strung out. I remember him at Radio City in 76 stumbling on the stage while playing Smoke on the Water with bar chords. It was sad. I loved his playing but not that night.
Just a side note -- the LIVE version from Australia gigs of WILD DOGS is absolutely over the top guitar work. The "FIRST member of Deep Purple to be able to play his solo songs on tour with the band. To me a master class of a solo from a true master of the guitar. RIP, Tommy.
Tommy Bolin wrote this masterful rock fuzion song. And on a good night -- he did carry Deep Purple on his shoulder. A great player. I've got the live audio of Deep Purple in Melbourne or Sydney and his playing absolutely wonderful. Bolin was a player with a GREAT amount of natural talent -- he had it in spades. To the theory guy -- take a page from Jon Lord on this one. You'll understand it alot better.
Sometimes people don't realize just how good Ian Paice and Jon Lord were........Bolin sounds great hear too. Much better than he sounded on the older Purple stuff. I saw them in 76 at Radio City and I wish they would have played this.
Bolin's really good at playing the one sharp ninth chord he knows isn't he? Note also that great solo where he plays two or three note fragments of a pentatonic scale over and over again.
You are cool because you think you know some theory. Too bad this song is about what people feel when they listen to it and not a math class. Good luck with making yourself feel like a big man with the response you won't be able to prevent yourself from posting.
Tommy was incredible. Especially with his own stuff, not to mention Alfonse Mouzon and Billy Cobham's Spectrum. Cob himself said that Bolin was his choice because he could play his ass off!
Tommy died 38 year ago on this day 12-04 08 at 25. What a shame! Listen to his work with the James Gang - Bang & Miami LP's, Billy Cobham, Alphonse Mouzon, solo LP's Teaser & Private Eyes, with Moxy, Energy Zephyr. Lot of great guitar work. Plus he had a decent voice.
it was actually 32 years ago today-Dec 4 ,1976.Tommy was one of a kind! His music & playing still sounds great today.R.I.P.- Tommy. Thanks for posting this!
I played this song in my band "Avalanche"( a power trio - me on bass) in 1976(San Diego) One of my favorities from Tommy! In my opinion, the other heavy song on Teaser is Marching Powder. And Quadrant 4 is one of his best solos - off Spectrum - Billy Cobham LP

Last concert in Japan is mistake. Forgotten!!!
His left hand was damaged. It's OK. <3
One of the most gifted guitarmans of all the times. AND - he wasn't someone's copy, he is REAL unique guitarist! Not fake.
