I was considering purchasing one of these animals for a companion/protection animal. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice regarding proper discipline. My main question has to do with the selection of a lead pipe that I could use to hit the animal in the head when it latches on to someone. Is there a formula for determining the diameter of the pipe? Does it depend on the weight of the dog or is it a "one size fits all" application?

Great video. I 'm on my second pit now. I have owned several different breeds of dogs and a pit is by far the most loyal intelligent and loving dogs i have ever owned. I will never own another breed. I got the one i have now at six weeks old. you have to get these dogs early and socialise them heavily with people and other dogs. His brothers and sisters are all dead due to neglect and fighting. I understand that people have been attacked, but the blame lies with the owner not the animal.
i killed two of them "American Pit Bull Pride (bullshit)" they attacked me and lucky i had the chance to get on top of my car and just as they where jumping and climbing to get me i shot one in the mouth and the other right between his fuckin eyes....my car was bloody i got stopped by the police and explained the whole thing....the owner said that his dogs where not agressive...fuckin unbeliveble.. and they got loose in the woods...who the fuck brings pit bulls in the fuckin woods?pit bullshit
i couldn't agree more, i do know of a couple of good Pitbulls but have experienced more bad ones than good ones & I work with dogs every day, sure the owners can make or break the animal but i've seen several well homed Pitbulls just loose it like someone flicked a switch, the one's we get here in New Zealand are very unpredictable, and they are pure breds not cross breeds, I know my dogs

This breed is mean and add that with the fact that when they bite they go for the throat an don’t let go you just don’t want to take that chance. Yes this dog has a high tolerance to pain but it has little patience for kids. Dominance is a big thing with this breed so you must always hold that spot or this dog will walk all over you. You can get lucky though there was a reason this was the most decorated dog during war world 1, . They have bad reputations because of what humans done to it

I have been bitten by Cavalier King Spaniels about 3 times each year (different dogs, different owners,) Jack Russells..don't even get me started on those psychos...
German Shepherds, Rotties, Dobermanns and Bull terriers are just big softies. I'd gladly go into a room full of these dogs and never flinch. Put me in a room with a Spaniel and I know I'll have a 50% chance of needing stitches after.

Awww the baby pitts are ADORABLE!! Me and my b/f just adopted a baby pitt. He's so great and friendly with people and other dogs especially when we take him to the dog park where he has the greatest time palying with his other friend dogs. We started socializing him as soon as he could take walk at 2 month old. he just turned 3 months and is so lovable! Love you Sparky!

I know the way we are raising and training our dog is the right way. in NO WAY I want him to be vicious or aggresive. That is why we started to socialize him now as a pup. He is very friendly and just loves to be pet. We smooch him all over with much love. We give him proper behavorial training. He's done good so far and understand commands.

There's been documented cases of human aggressive Pitbulls being bred. The main reason they were bred was because they were considered "prized" by the breeder.

APBTs are smaller dogs that ideally weigh between 50 and 60 lbs. do some research.
Pitbulls and other aggressive dogs should be given to those that can actually handle and train them properly. In order to adopt a pitbull sfacc, they'll make sure you won't use it for fighting, they'll maybe inspect your house, and you'll have to give them money in advance for mandatory obedience training.

a true pit bull shouldnt weigh more than 40 - 50 pounds. all these dogs are no longer like the originals. as a matter of fact any fighting dog that showed agression towards a person was usually killed as it would be very embarrassing to the owner and considered not a well bred dog

I was considering purchasing one of these animals for a companion/protection animal. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice regarding proper discipline. My main question has to do with the selection of a lead pipe that I could use to hit the animal in the head when it latches on to someone. Is there a formula for determining the diameter of the pipe? Great video. I 'm on my second pit now. I have owned several different breeds of dogs and a pit is by far the most loyal intelligent and loving dogs i have ever owned. I will never own another breed. I got the one i have now at six weeks old. you have to get these dogs early and socialise them heavily with people and other dogs. His brothers and sisters are all dead due to neglect and fighting. I understand that people have been attacked, but the blame lies with the owner not the animal.

In my 25 years as a vet I have only been growled at by a Pitbull ONCE. Never bitten.
I have been bitten by Cavalier King Spaniels about 3 times each year (different dogs, different owners,) Jack Russells..don't even get me started on those psychos...
German Shepherds, Rotties, Dobermanns and Bull terriers are just big softies. I'd gladly go into a room full of these dogs and never flinch. Put me in a room with a Spaniel and I know I'll have a 50% chance of needing stitches after.

Pitbulls and other aggressive dogs should be given to those that can actually handle and train them properly. In order to adopt a pitbull sfacc, they'll make sure you won't use it for fighting, they'll maybe inspect your house, and you'll have to give them money in advance for mandatory obedience training.

Nature vs nurture Pits have the highest rating for temperment at 83% while your regular house dogs have a temperment of 71% i Have a pit and hes a really good dog Pitbulls were bred to fight what was bred into them was high pain tolarence strong jaws and to pray on animals what these breeders forgot to breed into them was human aggresion these dogs were house dogs family pets as well.

An American Pit Bull Terrier's jaw is no more stronger than a Rott/ Gs / Am Bulldog / Dutch Shepard and more tested on National Geo - Bite Force Test ... while Pits are around 128-230 a Kangal is around 700+ & AM Bulldog = 500+ . It wasn't the strength of the Jaw that made this dog a great fighter it is the Determination & Drive to please his owners . A trait found in all Terriers . And ...

H/A was never meant to be in the American Pit Bull Terrier Gene - for the Dogmen who created this breed would kill off any dog that showed H/A . during a fight 3 HUMANS had to be in the ring at the same time . You can NOT fight a dog that you will have to worry about attacking YOU while Prepping and Handeling them . These dogs were handled all throughout a fight .

Actually I think less people should own them & less people should breed them - No Criminals should own any of the " Pit Bull " Breeds . I think all Rep. If it was bcus of the breed there would be MILLIONS ATTACKS A DAY but there isn't- there hasn't ever even been more than 20 deaths in 1 year due to " Pit Bulls " . a true pit bull shouldnt weigh more than 40 - 50 pounds. all these dogs are no longer like the originals. as a matter of fact any fighting dog that showed agression towards a person was usually killed as it would be very embarrassing to the owner and considered not a well bred dog

@notpoliticalcorrect from 1965-2001 431 people were killed by dogs, 21% of those killings were by pits... rotties came in second place, 16% of the killings... mixed dogs were high on the list, 15% or so and i'm sure many of these dogs had some pit in them...
they are the deadliest dogs, to other dogs as well...
why people would take a chance with so much fighting in this breed is beyond me... but if you want to know the 11 evil dogs you can google "bankrate 11 dogs insurance"...

the thing is they fight all the pit type dogs, anything that looks like a pit, thats why amstaf, presa canario, APBT and others have been fought and DESERVE their deadly rep... as to bias in the actuarial numbers and insurance companies, not at all, they strictly guide their insurance prices by the facts and that list of 11 dogs IS THE MOST DEADLY... if you want home owners insurance you may pay extra having these dogs...

In one of the cases I looked at, an 11 year old boy was reported to be "viciously mauled" by a pit bull. The newspaper article failed to mention that the boy had not even been bitten by the dog, the dog had actually jumped and knocked the boy over and scared him. People are so ignorant it is not even funny!!

@jstrick114 i know the temp argument, and the best explanation is that during their fighting background the pits that bit their masters were NOT bred, so they can be very intimate with handlers and vicious to other dogs especially, and even PRO pit sites often warn of having pits as to other dogs... its in their nature more so due to many generations of fighting, at least some percentage of them...
- if the trend is to make pits vicious then this is what you get and its real

@glorp896 that is not an explanation for the temperament argument. pits bulls are not aggressive towards people, plain and simple. when someone is attacked by a dog, you have to look at the circumstances. dogs in packs are more likely to be aggressive, and so are dogs who run loose; it doesn't matter what the breed is. don't sit here and call pit bulls "deadly" or "man-eaters" or whatever people who are afraid of them call them. that is a stereotype that ignorant people like you have given them

it is the best explanation in contrast to the kill ratios, do you have an explanation for why pit type dogs kill 21% of the people killed by dogs over many decades? not to mention mixed dogs which are very high on the list, many probably having some pit in them... the body counts do not lie...
