For those of you that think this is a "Talent" issue with casting, here is a breakdown of characters to be cast. * The Fire Nation (genocidal villains) will be brown/SE Asian. * The Earth Nation (indecisive, saved by white heroes) will be East Asian and African. * The Air Nomads (peace-loving, oppressed saviour and hero) will be Caucasian. * The Water Tribe (oppressed, Inuit-based, brown-skinned, brave heroes) will be Caucasian.
I always thought that the Fire Nation was Asian. I mean they all do look Asian but Shamlalal la something Septemper 11thy catsed Middle Eastern Actors for the Fire Nation go figure.
Avatar is merely Asian influenced. There is no actual Asia in the world of Avatar. A lot of the characters don't even look Asian. Hating a movie simply because of the actor's race is close-minded. Why don't you actually try watching the movie before you say it's bad?
I'm sure the movie will be visually beautiful, and might have a good story line. However lets both be honest, Avatar is based upon asian culture. By taking asians completely out of the series, or casting us as enemies, the series is essentially stripping asians of their culture. Equivalent to them Retelling the story of shaka zulu (Or an interpretation) as white, would be equally as disrespectful to african culture.

Well yeah, most of the viewers for the movie may also be little kids, and older viewers have trouble being able to discuss racism and hollywood bias to them. Mixing that ugliness with a fan's natural enjoyment brings up unpleasant feelings. I understand the whole fanboy thing. It drives me nuts that people are bashing anyone who remotely comes close to criticizing the upcoming Transformers movie. These fanboys love movies even before they've seen them. The debate/fight about Airbender's casting reminds me of the brouhaha over the Miley Cyrus "slanty eye" photo. It's hard to justify such a photo, but all her fans went ballistic that anyone would talk badly about Miley.

the japanese anime style used in the Avatar series was intended as a preference, and large globe eyes are just a stylistic choice not meaning to defer race and can be used to show youth in characters.

Also as another filipino, I'm offended by the casting choices because they chose to cast caucasians in the Watertribe by default by actors that already have roles. Due to poor decision making in the production.

This movie IS NOT racist. Do you want to know why? Because the Avatar is just inspired by Asian culture, it is a fantasy, it doesn't mean that they ARE Asians. Yes, that's true. But, in our world, races do exist, and, again, the filmmakers chose to have whites in the lead roles. They weren't going to have anything but that. They only cast Dev Patel after McCartney pulled out, and in response to the uproar over the cast. Honestly, if Paramount wanted to make a movie with all white leads, they should have chosen some other cartoon or book or story to use. They opened themselves up to this criticism. It's their fault, and their's alone.

For those of you that think this is a "Talent" issue with casting, here is a breakdown of characters to be cast. * The Fire Nation (genocidal villains) will be brown/SE Asian. * The Earth Nation (indecisive, saved by white heroes) will be East Asian and African. * The Air Nomads (peace-loving, oppressed saviour and hero) will be Caucasian. * The Water Tribe (oppressed, Inuit-based, brown-skinned, brave heroes) will be Caucasian.

Avatar is merely Asian influenced. There is no actual Asia in the world of Avatar. A lot of the characters don't even look Asian. Hating a movie simply because of the actor's race is close-minded. Why don't you actually try watching the movie before you say it's bad?

I'm sure the movie will be visually beautiful, and might have a good story line. However lets both be honest, Avatar is based upon asian culture. By taking asians completely out of the series, or casting us as enemies, the series is essentially stripping asians of their culture. Equivalent to them Retelling the story of shaka zulu (Or an interpretation) as white, would be equally as disrespectful to african culture.
Thinking that we should be ok with hand our culture over, is close minded.

it was on entertainment tonight at around 6:30 central time U.S. But they were only teasing everyone and gave tidbits of the trailer in 10-15 seconds :(

Well yeah, most of the viewers for the movie may also be little kids, and older viewers have trouble being able to discuss racism and hollywood bias to them. Mixing that ugliness with a fan's natural enjoyment brings up unpleasant feelings. I say they can watch the movie if they want, but they shouldn't get grumpy at you just because they hear truthful bad news of how the movie was produced. :) Row Row fight the power.

I understand the whole fanboy thing. It drives me nuts that people are bashing anyone who remotely comes close to criticizing the upcoming Transformers movie. These fanboys love movies even before they've seen them. The debate/fight about Airbender's casting reminds me of the brouhaha over the Miley Cyrus "slanty eye" photo. It's hard to justify such a photo, but all her fans went ballistic that anyone would talk badly about Miley.

and why are people still stuck on race. It's already been casted. If nething using all asian characters perpetuate the stereotype that only asians can do martial arts. I like the cast diversity.
and fans need to understand that not everything is going to match the show. hence y it's call an adaptation. as long as the movie is great

the japanese anime style used in the Avatar series was intended as a preference, and large globe eyes are just a stylistic choice not meaning to defer race and can be used to show youth in characters.
It's a faulty style, but the creators chose it I guess because they're big anime fans.
Also as another filipino, I'm offended by the casting choices because they chose to cast caucasians in the Watertribe by default by actors that already have roles. Due to poor decision making in the production.

This movie IS NOT racist. Do you want to know why? Because the Avatar is just inspired by Asian culture, it is a fantasy, it doesn't mean that they ARE Asians. The movie could be played by blacks if Shyamalan wanted. Besides, most of the characters are WHITE (besides Katara and sokka and a few others)

But the argument that "just because it's inspired by Asian culture, doesn't mean that they ARE Asians and that Sokka and Katara are WHITE" is just as fault an argument as any other, if not ignorant of the creative roles and influences by Asians made for this series.

How are they white? What do you base that on? Are you going to be like the many others who overlook all the obvious signs that the cartoon/characters are based on Asian/Inuit cultures? Lord of the Rings is a fantasy but is based in European culture. Now, you know that they wouldn't cast the movies with all blacks, and no, it's not up to Shyamlan. Yes, that's true. But, in our world, races do exist, and, again, the filmmakers chose to have whites in the lead roles. They weren't going to have anything but that. They only cast Dev Patel after McCartney pulled out, and in response to the uproar over the cast. Honestly, if Paramount wanted to make a movie with all white leads, they should have chosen some other cartoon or book or story to use. They opened themselves up to this criticism. It's their fault, and their's alone.
