@pmgodfrey this is only if you have to high voltage and needs to limit the corrent. when you put 3 in series it will be the corrent that is needed for an LED and a 9v bat.
You're confusing current with voltage. While three 3 volt LED's in series would require 9 volts, current still needs to be limited. LED's aren't like light bulbs. If you have a 3.3 volt LED and you want to drive it at 20mA with a 12 volt source then 12-3.3=8.7. 8.7/.02 = 435. You would need a resistor somewhere around the value of 435 ohms where .02 is your 20mA current draw.

Use current limiting resistors in series with LED groups to prevent exceeding the maximum LED current rating. Most LEDs aren't designed for more than 50mA.
