Devers was the world record holder. Joyner did this late in her career. Very unusual for sprinters to develop that type of speed and power in their later years. Anything that unusual will draw questions. Steroids are but one class of performance enhancing drugs. Not what Armstrong is purported to have used.

She was model beautiful. I was infatuated by this woman. Steroids did not cause her death, but they sure did cause her run times to be reduced lower than any male or female in the history of track and field. In one year, she dropped her 100M by .47 seconds. Like I said, look at high school, college, and professional track and field, and you'll never see anybody drop that much time off their score that quick.

Look at he musculature when she was winning - and a YEAR before. All the runners at the Olympic level were AMAZED at how much muscle she put on in ONE year (when she was a nobody to SUPERWOMAN). I can't believe they let this record stand it's just so unfair to every women that enters a career in the 100m.
Even her own coach had said the race was wind assisted but the measure had broke on the day.
Then there was her such completly obvious drug abuse, in 1987 she comes second in the WC with a very mediocre time. Then in 1988 late in her career she comes back with a huge physic, deepend voice and breaks the world record.
1 month before they bring in random drug testing she quits.

I totally agree with RANS 42. Its a great observation. Flo Jo will long live in the memory but her domination in the sprints was too brief. She retired soon after the 88 Olympics and became a millionaire. This does suggest that she was using some sort of anabolic steroid and did not want to get caught. I think despite this the IAAF officials should have ratified 10.61 as the 100m world record and not 10.49. C Jeter is coming close to breaking 10.6 right now.

they tested no one several times in those days .... it was random with the exception of the big meets... worlds Olympics etc... It was revealed at the Dubin inquiry that Bob Keerse and Charlie Francis the American and Canadian coaches resecptively were tip off about what events at the meets would be randomly tested... she was a cheat ... no one improves at the world class level, in one season like she did... she was world class for years and then she is murdering the worlds best ?
