Well, no shit the Foo Fighters and QOTSA aren't metal. They're no more metal than bands like Jane's Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins or A Perfect Circle. They're alternative rock, so it's not as easy to label them. Same as Paramore, Panic At The Disco, Fall Out Boy and GNR...who ever said they were metal? Some of your other non-metal bands have some elements of it in their sound, and while I would agree that not all of them are very good, why should it matter how pure their metal pedigree is?

Numetal can't be metal even if have metal in his name or metal influences or sounding (it's fusion genre by the way, so how can be metal subgenre?), because for example Corejazz have Jazz influences and sounding and of course by definition it's not jazz even if have jazz in name, because it's evolved from Hardcore. There is a lot of more examples, like Deathcore.

I guess the best way I could describe it is that alternative was the original name for indie. It was used back in the 70/80s for bands that you listened to but no one really knew. They were underground. Then people started using the term to much, and it got dropped. It wasn't until mid 90s that it made a come back for post-grunge.
