  • People will definitely adhere to this peace day, except when they don't want to.

Most protagonists in war believe they are the good guys. And so, they are not going to forgo the opportunity of striking a blow against their evil opponents because of stupid "peace day" sponsored by privileged idiots who have the time to dream up such nonsense.

Nice guy, but an utter, utter moron.

  • 'If you think you are too small to have an impact, try to sleep with a mosquito in your room" -Mosquito Tactits is my number one motto for organizing P.o.D. !!! :D

  • a ceasefire for 1 day?

  • Brilliant speech.

  • Please visit my channel for the unpopular truth about homosexuality.

A person does not need hatred or any kind of phobia in order to acknowledge important differences between heterosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption and homosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption. Even non-religious people know this.

Homosexual activists, with support from the media, have successfuly framed themselves as noble victims; it's an effective way to push a social agenda.

  • Our school celebrated Peace One Day, and apparently Jeremy Gilley is going to skype my school tomorrow, and I will be interviewed by him! How AWESOME!! Im so excited!

  • if you can do it for one day- it means absolutely nothing

  • @Tolstoievsky and the starving children that didn't die on september 21st will die on the 22nd, i question this guy's motives

  • @Tolstoievsky Well if we can't do it for one day, how can we think about peace in long term ?

  • @lynebre i think peace is a very important matter...so it should be approached in a pragamtic manner, not this dated idealism bullshit

  • I was so inspired by this video that I'm getting Nickelodeon to celebrate this day next Wednesday. No one can do everything but everyone can do something.

  • Praise God!

  • Imagine a world without Islam.

  • @mrdinx before I go about that abstract thought, I'd like to ask you to imagine a world without Islam and tell me what it's like.

  • This should be the new Christmas!

  • Or how about just one religion: LOVE (Philia)!???

  • Peace is never going to happen because humans are flawed. We inherited this imperfection from Adam (Romans 5:12). To makes matters worst the whole world is under the control of Satan (1 John 5:19; 2 Corinthians 4:3,4) Even if humans were somehow able to achieve peace because they are under Satan's control that peace would be short lived. God's Kingdom, the same kingdom Jesus spoke of at Matthew 6:9,10, is the only way true peace will be achieved. This is the ONLY solution to peace. (Ps 37:10,11)

  • @kxmode Precisely... well, there's one more, The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he or God didn't exist.!!! And thats exactly the world is being tricked into by genius minds...!

  • To redirect the process of intolerance it is necessary to question our belief and convictions and to show our willingness to have more empathy with others. In this way our actions can really contribute to more peacefulness in society.

  • Man, this is one of the best holidays! From now on, I know about it, and from now on I will definitely celebrate it :D

  • How can i get the shirt that he's wearing?

  • "If you put a drop of something in water it will change it forever" - the problem with this is that it also works for conflict. You may have peace, but all it takes is one act of agression to ruin it all.

  • Why is this the worst year ever in Afghanistan for U.S. soldier deaths? Doesn't sound like peace day is working so well in Afghanistan.

  • @file83 You realize there are 364 other days, right?

  • @devourerofbabies Yeah, that's kind of my point.

  • sadly if September 21 is the day of peace, September 22 will be the day of war

  • thatsgreat . but FYI vaccinations are a scam , old news.

  • what an amazing man....

  • Did he just say that someone telling him his idea wouldn't work was worse than 9/11?

  • Love is all you need. Yes, as a species we faught and struggled and killed and it made us stronger and smarter. But we've reached a point where we know that we can make progress better through communication and cooperation than through war. We just have to get past our egos. As Christopher Hitchens is known for saying, our prefrontal lobes are too small while our adrenal glands are too big. Fight or flight helped us on The Great Plains but will kill us if we don't adopt peace.

  • I seek peace. It start from within. That is where we shall start.

  • none of this makes any sense, come on... you're telling me the entire world will agree to a cease fire day, but they won't agree to just stopping all war? It makes no sense. If you're at war you're killing them, you have no regard for their life at all, I don't understand this. If they will stop one day, why not stop all days. It's nonsense.

  • "if everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace" ~Mosquito Tactics

  • @TheRacoonGhost Awesome quote. John Lennon is such an inspiration.

  • The beauty of it is that there can be interviews conducted betw/ performances. I spoke with a well-known oud player who was once exiled from Iraq who said he'd be interested. But I need lots of help with this. I would like to see tax deductions for those common and wealthy musicians who participate. That's further down the road.

  • @presentpeace I'm a singer/songwriter whose friends told me to learn to accompany myself on an instrument. So I taught myself guitar almost two years ago via You Tube videos from next level guitar. I came up with this idea while looking for a new, cheap guitar on musicians friend.com, a Guitar Center entity. I kept reading reviews on different guitars from soldiers in Iraq and realized there are musicians who'd rather have guitars than guns in their hands. I live in LA. If you do, too, email me.

  • Okay, cynics, if the Taliban can get on board, surely you all can too.

    Worth a listen:

Radiolab - One Good Deed Deserves Another (Christmas in the Trenches)

  • @Davidmongar How about peeps getting together w me to contact Gilley and some musicians, many of them veterans (some vet orgs that teach music therapy to returning soldiers) for something I call 24 for Peace, an org I'd like to create/see running that collects a bunch of filmmakers and musicians from all over the globe to play an internet-streamed, 24-hr concert w performers who are active in the war and vets, along with others who may or may not be famous and want to play-once/mo. @ diff wars

  • Well I'm looking forward to that day. How about in 10 years you raise it to a week? And then in 20 years you raise it to a month?

  • September 21st it is

  • Do you rememba?

    The 21st night of Septemba.

  • Wow

    Talk about drive and passion

    I love this

    This is why I'm alive

This is why I gave birth to children

    Peace to you all!

    Thank you, Jeremy

  • naive man talking about something he knows nothing about because he read in some book something about responsibility. believing that something simple as "making a movie" can change anything.

I have seen war, i have lived in war... wake up people, it doesn't work like that.

    A.Sandler

    Israel

  • @AlonSandler Please, just do me a favor. This coming September 21st, just be nice to people. Don't think about where they have come from or what they think of you, just be nice to them. And if it goes well, try it again one year later.

  • If you want peace, prepare for war.

  • @heintron Typical American mentality.

  • not until peace is more profitable than not...

  • I don't know who disliked this, but I question their humanity.

  • Oh sure because football matches are known for being peaceful. hehe Peaceday hooligans.

  • Seriously. Does no one else find this to be astoundingly naive?

  • @DonQuixotedeKaw I'm a Buddhist. So, no. I certainly don't find it naiive. I just drop the skepticism. Easy.

  • @DonQuixotedeKaw Not really

  • 8:54. second row from bottom, most bored man ever

  • the facebook page is /peaceoneday

  • why no 720p ted???

  • Jeremy Gilley deserves nobels peace prize!!! like it on facebook!

  • no no more comments, THIS WAS F@ACKING EPIC!

go out, put up flyers, make a difference.

  • Time to grow up and get a real job, Jeremy.

  • Not 70% !!!

  • You know how I know this wouldn't work? I had the thought "Why wouldn't I mess with this?" I don't know if I actually would, but I think SOMEONE would. Another group of oppressed people might think nothing of this and use it as an advantage to strike with force against their oppressor, if their oppressor ever gave up. With the inequalities of the world, I REALLY don't think this is happening any time soon. Not in our lifetimes, at least. Doesn't mean it's not a decent goal.

  • Have a look at the pictures of war - all the same types of people - male - 26 - 45 years old killing - you've got to feel sorry for wimen

  • He has beautiful hair. He must be right.

  • I think I have never been a more passionate speaker on TED...great

  • Imagine a world without religion

  • @MCAMVP I dont know what douchebag thumbed up your comment, but stfu dood. You will never face the peace of TRUE (emphasis) religion, with thoughts like that.

  • @Not18Im13 Since more than 1 "douchebag" +1'd my comment, I'm sure I have a good point.

As for "peace of TRUE religion", if by true religion you mean:

    good morals-> religion=/= morals

plain spirituality-> no god-figure required, otherwise it's just religion

theocracy-> see al-Qaida, dominionism, middle ages, republicans (only as much peace or humanitarianism as necessary= not much)

We've seen the true self-serving face of religion over the centuries, usually masked as "wars to bring 'peace'"

  • @MCAMVP beautiful

  • @MCAMVP Are you North American? You're living in it.

  • @dan819999 living in a world without religion?

As long as the US brings forth dubious, borderline delirious politicians who have a say in any affair above rural level -*squints at presidential candidates and tea party*- ,

the notion of a North America without religion will stay as realistic as a Pat Robertson not seeing every force of nature as a sign of god.

  • @MCAMVP

...? how could it change something?

  • @tamii105

it would take away the possibility of using an imaginary friend as an excuse.

Just think of an impending date related to an event almost exactly 10 years ago.

  • @MCAMVP god help us.

  • does peace make a bigger profit than war ?

  • @twistedbass15 Yes it does, you just have to know how to do it right.

  • @perscrumption War on cancer. War on terror. War on Drugs. War on war. Peace on ............?

  • @perscrumption Peace on drugs larf !

  • peace comes from intelligence so....... what a mountain to climb :-/

  • When I was a teenager I loved violence. As I got older I realized violence is wrong because I don't want to be harmed and I'm no better or worse than any other living creature and the only reason one would think differently is because of ego. One way we build our ego (the story of "me") is by identifying with ideologies. If you identify yourself as X, those who are Y are seen as different. This is where alienation starts and enemies are found. If you let go of ego there is no enemy.

  • I think people go to war because they find the alternative even more horrific. Confused how this would work.

  • @rbairos1

The problem is that in nature, it's much easier to get what you want with violence. People will always have disagreements, and when this occurs on a larger scale, countries go to war. Diplomacy and negotiating only goes so far before natural instinct kicks in and shots are fired.

  • aww awright.. i suppose i could stop killing people for at least one day

seriously though, if everyone had the social conscience this guy has imagine how wonderful our world would be then

  • Sounded lame to me, but yeah, the vaccine thing, that's win.

  • Comment removed

  • I am very thankful for people like him.

  • bullshit

  • Why have I not heard of this before??!!

  • Very inspiring speech!

  • Fantastically inspiring! How can we help??

  • @LauraLeighClarke Been wondering the same thing, then I talked to my yoga instructor (she's the owner of the studio) and on peace day (sept 21st) we've decided to get a local band and have a donation street yoga class, and any money will be sent to the peace one day organization. Just raise awareness around you, get the radio in the street, raise money, whatever it is .. just let as many people know as you can :) Peace peace peace and <3<3<3

  • @tkherbi9a Hey, thanks for sharing. Sounds like a good plan! xx

  • Looks like your persistence is paying off. Well done.

  • This is of the same level as world peace in beauty contests

  • This blew my mind... It's incredible. It's fantastic. And it's such a simple idea too. Why haven't I heard of this until now? Why didn't anyone else have this idea before?

Expect me to do whatever I can on September the 21st

  • I was like "yeah, ok, whatever, one day of peace, " but then he said over a million children were vaccinated and in one second my eyes were full of tears and I got it.

  • I welcome the idea of one day of peace, but anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of why there's war will know that this won't change a damn thing. Most people do not like war, yet we're always at war. That is a simple picture for Mr. Jeremy Gilley to go figure out.

Whoever came up with the quote "change comes from the bottom up" (with regards to our current society), must be completely delusional.

  • When the first image of the day of peace is a demonstration of a sectarian religion, you know he is doing it wrong...

  • Whirled Peas!!

  • peace will arrive soon because all life is about to be wiped out by runaway greenhouse effect

  • Wow, here is an example of an individual making a difference by actually *doing* something rather than just complaining about things.

I tip my hat to you, Mr Gilley.

(though that last analogy to homoeopathy was a little crazy)

  • Dec 21 2012...

    Hmmm...what will happen!

  • Wow, here is an example of an individual making a difference by actually *doing* something rather than just complaining about things.

I tip my hat to you, Mr Gilley.

  • it reminds of Sept '85 when some one shared "Take back the night". I shook my head and shared " why take back the night? take back your life . . I don't want Peace for one day. . I want Peace as a way of life. I want the Abundance of nature be used for the good instead of have the greed of a few spoil it for all. . just imagine what 6 billion, oops , 7 billion now. . hey can we all play stupid. no money and just do as needs be done? and make music where ever so much as a hint of trouble brew

  • this man, is truly great.

  • we've got nearly 7 billion people on this planet - and humans haven't figured out yet that achieving a unified state of mind / emotion ... unified state of being is never going to happen?

get rid of the word peace. it's fallen mute and powerless.

there is harm and there is harmony. insofar, i've not known harmony. want to strive for anything, strive for harmony.

therein, is your stepping stone toward peace.

  • ...what did john lennon say about waiting on money to help from minds that hate ?

  • this guy talks the same way i do......really really really fast and constant! :) and he also speaks truth and soul and love and ideals and not shit! kudos!

  • Who woud dislike this? Seriously? Does satan get 29 votes for himself? Wtf is wrong with you people.

  • Cool, my birth day is Septemeber 20th. That's a nice way to start each new year :D

  • This is simple. Dictatorship, tryanny, too much socialism and communism do not work. Study human nature enough and you will know that personal liberty married with personal accountability, representative democracy and the rule of law, along with enlightened self-interest style capitalism is what works best for peace and prosperity for the greatest number of people. There's your TED talk. Peace.

  • K this person controlling this posting is shit,,,its another persons intention............Love is all...make it so : )

  • fuck off you twat ..what is this shit..yeah all good but now you are a twat..repeating..is that your design?

  • @nicestarsystem Are you a retard? Because none of what you've said makes any sense. Who are you calling a twat? Who are you telling to fuck off?

  • @apocaRUFF Sorry but I did not write that!!!!...as I recall I wrote "keep up the good work" ...Wow THAT IS FREAKY.

  • fuck off you twat

  • Imagine all the people.....

    Living life in peace

  • @violet101 It would be fcking boring ^_^

  • I loves U violet101

  • @SiliconBong thanks :)

  • He got a standing ovation, violet101; like it was spontaneous;: like it was something every human there could resonate with.

  • @violet101 You may say I'm a dreamer... but i'm not the only one......

  • If everyone who wants peace is willing to work as hard as Jeremy, peace EVERY day would be a reality.

  • he should come to mexico.

  • The media should also have a day of "no profiting from war day" as they love nothing more than showing you war news

  • giving polio vaccinations to the enemy, great idea idiot

  • @planetmax83 yes because kids are the enemy, you are the idiot

  • I started this comment to say I'll participate in the "One day of peace" ...then I remembered peace is a natural state every day if one is in the moment (oh dear this comment is so different than I thought it would be when I started) ...perhaps I should stop and just be at peace... oh so now it is about choice...yikes! ...back to what I typed before ...stilling the mind is one way to remembering peace

ok I can be mindful of Peace and make my 'doings' peaceful every day ...September 21 too!

  • This guy is a moron, who caters to other morons who in turn march blindly under the Globalism flag and IMF leadership.

  • Here's an idea. Somebody may have thought of it first but how about have a "Give $1 Day" every year?

Imagine, roughly $3-4billion available every year ready to be used to really kick start the millenium development goals again.

  • loved this! amazing results!

    passionate and dedicated!

  • Amazing talk! It makes me feel like going outside huging people and telling them about peace day and I'm only on minute 6 of the talk :D I also like the way he talks, fast and with SO much passion <3 Lots love and respect

  • This needs more views

  • i thought that he was a girl in the thumb nail for the vid lol awesome

  • wholy fuk, did he breath during that talk?

  • Such an idea is very noble, very commendable, so very everything but useful. Lofty ideals devoid of any grounding on the human experience are as utterances sprouting forth from the mouths of infants.

Is it possible that the 18th Century and early 19th Century philosophers are the apex of Western thought? Could you imagine John Locke uttering something like this? Or Frédéric Bastiat? Yet this kind of nonsense is promulgated as "enlightened thinking."

  • I was watching this with my 13 year old niece and part way through she said “My teacher says the best way to kick a habit is to start with day one”.

  • @panterameetsrebel She's got a good teacher : )

  • Perhaps the most passionate TED talk I have seen, and I've seen A LOT.

  • Keep up the good work

    *peace*

    : )

  • I wish he slowed down a little bit.

  • The ruling class elite don't want world peace :(,

they probably continue to fund the Taliban.

We must remove them to succeed

  • 21st of September, my birthday =D

  • Textbook example of symptom treatment.

  • @BaileysBeads indeed

  • Part of the problem is assimilation moron.

  • 20 dislikes on a video about peace i just dont understand how that can be

  • @babiesgonewildful it explains the challenges one will face to spread peace :) don't let those dislikes discourage you!

  • Now we just need 364 more ;)

  • It's actually frustrating, the intro's, because it's proof the director of this channel does NOT, EVER, look at what people are discussing here. Or they flat out don't care.

  • amazing talk ... i myself have spent alot of time thinking about peace how can we make people not hate each other stop violence etc... what i came up with is like that ... peace is a very fragile state and one mans lust for power of any kind can break it , that lust is just inevitable and will happen. AMAZing talk and i will support it on facebook whatever i will tell people about this day and i will share that video with my friends hope you will do the same and maybe peace will spread !

  • A well deserved standing ovation.

  • unknown hero, working to bring in peace with attention, the media wont even help him.i fucking cant stand the media honestly, everything thats wrong with the world is beacuse if them seriously, miss information, distorting facts, honesty. i mean seriously dont u have to take an oath or something when u become a journalist, all these channels bringing the other side of the story, there is no side to a story, there is just a STORY "full stop". i respect independent journalist but i hate MSM

  • Am i the only one, who find it ridiculous, that people fight even despite the fact that peace is a default setting?

  • @SEThatered "peace" is not the default setting

there have been complex social conflicts since socially complex species have existed

  • @Magmacano

It is a default setting simply because it takes an effort to start a conflict.

But it takes no effort to not fight.

And if humans are mindless primitive animals, then maybe peace indeed is not an option...

  • @SEThatered I think that both you and I are much more primitive and "mindless" than we think - or would like to believe - we are.

And you do forget that we ourselves are animals.

Wisdom comes when one begins to question even the very concept of consciousness.

  • @SEThatered what do you mean default its not default at all everyone want to have more power every being on this planet if its the tiger who fights another tiger to take the leadership over the pack and if its the humans who kill each other for resources money what ever the point is having the lust for power is in all creatures to ensure the individual want to survive but it goes against them eventualy as a race at least with humans it starts to happen

  • @sashakid

It is a default setting simply because it takes an effort to start a conflict.

But it takes no effort to not fight.

And if humans are mindless primitive animals, then maybe peace indeed is not an option...

  • @SEThatered you sound as if being lazy is better than doing something. all of our lives we try to achive things and those things that we try to achive are what keeps us alive giving us reason to continue living we all must have some sort of a goal otherwise life have no meaning coming from that point you can conclude that people will try to compete over same goals eventualy leading to conflict also it is silly to conclude that if gathering food takes effort the default state for us is hunger...
