Just finished reading the Farseer books (assassin and tawny man trilogies) and I feel like Fitz Chivalry and Jon Snow are extremely similar characters. If you've read both series? Just thing about it haha.
After watching several videos such as this, and seeing fan made pictures that were made before HBO made it into a tv show, I must say that they nailed it with the actors. Almost all of them look pretty much like we imagined.
@Syrioify I would credit that to Martin more than anyone else, you know, wrote the books, described and fleshed each character to the Nth degree....and worked closely with HBO to make it....
@igerree I know very well that HBO let Martin very close in on the production. Im also a huge fan of the books, so I know how detailed his characters is described as well. But when it comes down to it, HBO had and still has the power to do anything they want with ASoIaF whether its in the books or not, Martin said so himself in an interview. So you got to give them credit for how much they have actually listened to Martin and not gone their own way.

@igerree well there were hints about them in the book, and I guess they wanted to make it VERY obvious for the viewers or something. It's certainly not one of my favorite scenes and I found it very unecessary. And while they might not have stayed 100% true to the book, it is the best ''book to movie/tv adaption'' I have personally seen :) While were on that though, Renly is one of those characters I think they messed up in the show, compared to the book.

For me the Rhaegar theory just makes sense: Ned was a man of unfailing honour and it was completely out of character for him to cheat on Catelyn. We also know that he insisted on raising Jon, despite Catelyn's hatred of him, that he made a promise to Lyanna on her death bed and that he even kept the identity of Jon's Mother secret from Robert, his closest friend.

E.g., I know a man with blond hair, blues eyes and fair skin who has a Lebanese father with black hair, dark brown eyes and dark complexion. Really Jon is Rhaegar son. Ned kept it a secret so Robert would never know because Robert loved Lyanna. I hope that Azhor Ahai (Jon Snow) destroys the Boltons,retakes the North and aids Daenerys when she takes the Iron Throne but i am sure G.RR Martin will have other ideas

@Fektthis indeed it is romantic, since the theory is about an heir prince, married to a noble lady(most likely out of political reasons) who falls for an impressive/impetuous young lady and runs away with her...we ought to admit it, in that world and civilisation level, the idea of true, mad love is highly romantic and one who feels it does not give a grumpkin's crap abt the consequences...plus, there's always some space for this type of romance in an adventure-fantasy novel,even in GRRM's world

I think the only hole in the Rhaegar/Lyanna theory is that Ned bothered to use the name 'Wylla.' He never had to give a name at all, it's not like Robert could get anything out of Ned that Ned didn't want to share. Just saying 'Wylla' when he didn't need to say a thing seems arbitrary to me, and Eddard Stark was anything but arbitrary.
I'm reading the first part of book 3 and now i've spoilt jon's point-of-view story damn me. It's more annoying that Jon's may fav character and i'm wholly interested in his story and i've gone and ruined it somewhat.

I think the show will be different from the books. They may make Benjen his father that makes more sense than this Lyanna& Rheager thing. He may be the baby that Cersei thought she lost from episode 2 when she talked to Catlyn after Bran's fall. I read somewhere that Cersei was promised to Benjen during the Targaren war and that may be why Benjen took the black, because Cersei broke his heart.

Thats why i think the books are great the characters reflect mostly how they lived. Tyrion thought a Lannister has been treated like shit so he protects those who cant protect themselves and tries to do the right thing most of the time. Jon castle raised but knows he can never be the Lord of Winterfell but he is content with honoring his family. Aria is young so she rash and uninhibited to politcal correctness. You shouldn't judge Sansa so harshly keep in mind how she was raised.
@Xantheus07 Sansa and Aria are equally raised, but they are completely opposite as a person. So I don't think it is solely to blame the environment, it is her personality. She's not brave enough to examine the world around her, instead she continues hiding in fairy tale world, and refused to understand that the knights serve for killing.
Just finished the first book Game of Thrones and was the best book i have ever read, love all the characters, really enjoyed Eddard too bad he died :( Pretty much love all the characters except Sansa, but she has her perks to! Cant wait for the tv series to release!! :):):): hopfully it works out.
The pictures are nice... but I've always hated Jon. He has waaay too many Mary Sue tendencies (ESPECIALLY if R+L=J turns out to be true). He's an honorable man, a great warrior, serving an honorable order and whining about honor and oaths whenever he gets a boner. Whenever it seems that something actually fun might happen (like staying with the wildlings, or accepting Stannis's proposal) he decides to be honorable and good and incredibly BORING. If he becomes king in the end, my books will burn!
@ThiefFanatic Jon's a great warrior compared to the other recruits, as he has had sword training before hand. Quorin halfhand almost defeated him if not for the intervetion of Ghost. Jon had Longclaw at the time. He also had an incredible amount of fortunate circumstances that helped his rise, wight attack, stannis crushing Rayder's horde etc. he's not all perfect

Very VERY good books. One of the best series of its kind. I love the Starks, but man, they have just had nothing go there way. And I almost threw Clash of Kings at the wall when Catelyn let Jaime go at the end.
Robert was a spendthrift and a drunkard. He made a terrible king, more interested in whoring than being a king. If he hadn't been killed by the boar, he would have given Ned to the Lannisters because he's such a coward. Sure when he won the crown he was a great man, but that quickly went away.

Oh, without a doubt the best fantasy series I've ever read. I still don't think that the "Robert who Ned knew" was all that great of a person. He still whored around and even Ned's sister was reluctant to marry him. I think that we get the main view from Ned, who was, as we know, loyal to a fault. But, no matter how bad Robert was, he was still better than Joffrey!

@Fektthis indeed it is romantic, since the theory is about an heir prince, married to a noble lady(most likely out of political reasons) who falls for an impressive/impetuous young lady and runs away with her...we ought to admit it, in that world and civilisation level, the idea of true, mad love is highly romantic and one who feels it does not give a grumpkin's crap abt the consequences...plus, there's always some space for this type of romance in an adventure-fantasy novel,even in GRRM's world

I think the only hole in the Rhaegar/Lyanna theory is that Ned bothered to use the name 'Wylla.' He never had to give a name at all, it's not like Robert could get anything out of Ned that Ned didn't want to share. Just saying 'Wylla' when he didn't need to say a thing seems arbitrary to me, and Eddard Stark was anything but arbitrary.

I think the show will be different from the books. They may make Benjen his father that makes more sense than this Lyanna& Rheager thing. He may be the baby that Cersei thought she lost from episode 2 when she talked to Catlyn after Bran's fall. I read somewhere that Cersei was promised to Benjen during the Targaren war and that may be why Benjen took the black, because Cersei broke his heart.

I think that Jon Snow is Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark's son because Jon Snow is talked about being "born" at The Tower of Joy where Rhaegar and Lyanna fled in love, and Eddard and Howland fought the three Kingsguard and survived and Lyanna's last words to Eddard were "Promis me Ned," probably to raise Jon and not say that he is Rhaegar's son! I can't imagine Eddard Stark ever having an affair, not to mention everyone says that Jon looks like a STark and Arya looks like Lyanna .Theories?

BUT in A dance with dragons, a secondary character tells is that Ned was looking for a way to winterfell during the war, and the safer way he had found was by a fisherman's boat. There was a woman, the fisherman's daughter. She cared for him for a time, and then she gave birth to john. That is what is said. But I would really like your theory to be true.

Thats why i think the books are great the characters reflect mostly how they lived. Tyrion thought a Lannister has been treated like shit so he protects those who cant protect themselves and tries to do the right thing most of the time. Jon castle raised but knows he can never be the Lord of Winterfell but he is content with honoring his family. Aria is young so she rash and uninhibited to politcal correctness. You shouldn't judge Sansa so harshly keep in mind how she was raised.

@Xantheus07 Sansa and Aria are equally raised, but they are completely opposite as a person. So I don't think it is solely to blame the environment, it is her personality. She's not brave enough to examine the world around her, instead she continues hiding in fairy tale world, and refused to understand that the knights serve for killing.

Just finished the first book Game of Thrones and was the best book i have ever read, love all the characters, really enjoyed Eddard too bad he died :( Pretty much love all the characters except Sansa, but she has her perks to! Cant wait for the tv series to release!! :):):): hopfully it works out.

The pictures are nice... but I've always hated Jon. He has waaay too many Mary Sue tendencies (ESPECIALLY if R+L=J turns out to be true). He's an honorable man, a great warrior, serving an honorable order and whining about honor and oaths whenever he gets a boner. Whenever it seems that something actually fun might happen (like staying with the wildlings, or accepting Stannis's proposal) he decides to be honorable and good and incredibly BORING. If he becomes king in the end, my books will burn!

@ThiefFanatic Jon's a great warrior compared to the other recruits, as he has had sword training before hand. Quorin halfhand almost defeated him if not for the intervetion of Ghost. Jon had Longclaw at the time. He also had an incredible amount of fortunate circumstances that helped his rise, wight attack, stannis crushing Rayder's horde etc. he's not all perfect

Only read two books so far as I picked up the entire series that is out at Borders out of curosity.
Very VERY good books. One of the best series of its kind. I love the Starks, but man, they have just had nothing go there way. And I almost threw Clash of Kings at the wall when Catelyn let Jaime go at the end.

Robert was a spendthrift and a drunkard. He made a terrible king, more interested in whoring than being a king. If he hadn't been killed by the boar, he would have given Ned to the Lannisters because he's such a coward. Sure when he won the crown he was a great man, but that quickly went away.

Oh, without a doubt the best fantasy series I've ever read. I still don't think that the "Robert who Ned knew" was all that great of a person. He still whored around and even Ned's sister was reluctant to marry him. I think that we get the main view from Ned, who was, as we know, loyal to a fault. But, no matter how bad Robert was, he was still better than Joffrey!
