We had a pearl as well- she looked a great deal like your Nym. :) She had a period, after her cagemate died, of singing like a male, wildly and really shrill.
I have a Female called Tweety :D She's able to talk, Whistle but no tricks...
I just wish she wasn't afraid of my hands because thats the only we knew how to get her into the cage... By putting our hand ontop of her and putting her in, But guys just feed your bird some millet and slowly go towards the cage... :) Good luck
@ibyOFshieldz have you tried to perch train her? that might work better than covering her to get her back in.. birds who hate hands are tricky little beasties.. the more you present your hand in a scary manner (like the covering) the worse it gets. Zu is afraid of hands but ive gotten to the point where i can move her around as long as i dont move my fingers or i get bit. just find the trigger and remove it. if its the whole hand, try to perch train. show its not something to fear by being calm
@ibyOFshieldz :O my birds name is tweety she is yellow..... she can whistle but no tricks :/ To me she is very shy and afraid of everyone but she doesnt bite so is she tamed or just really shy..
@KarinaRockss My Cockatiel only seems to bite, when she feels threatened, when i touch her wings, her front, or her back...
It seems the head is the best place to touch her for now... When out the cage, she more or less 'Screams' for company, Then when you enter the room she flies on you, so i think it depends per cockatiel, Depending on her age, it's hard to define a tamed cockatiel.
Try feeding her seed by seed from your finger or try stroking her head... It's all about time!
cock en roll!!! i have an albino female cockaktiel too she tends to make a sexy whistle but not as good as my male.....a lil bit unloud...while my male is clearer and louder.
@AnujDeuskar it depends on the bird and how you react to it. never grab at a bird that doesnt want to be held it just makes them scared of you. i have 3 cockatiels and each took its own time, Nym (this one) warmed up to me in about 4 wks Sere took about 6mths and Zu took well over a year. in saying that, each of these birds were rescued from people who treated them badly so it took them a long time to learn that i wasnt like their old owners. sit, talk to them eat near them they will come around
@AnujDeuskar to tame a cockatiel it takes about 3 days, but for its full trust it can take months of playing and cuddling etc, but never give them consequences for biting or pooping everywhere or they will take it to heart and see you a the enemy.
She sounds like a female, too. I have a young female who has recently learned to wolf whistle. These two sound very similar. Although it's much more difficult, females can be taught to whistle with a lot of persistence and patience.
we have a beautiful HEN cockatiel just like yours looks very similar and similar whistles. Frankie isnt DNA tested and is 100% female as she has laid multiple clutches. Cockatiels male or female can have orange face markings the person who fired at you about the sex of Nym may have 22 years experience but is obviously very uneducated about cockatiels when it comes to sexing. Might i add a pearly which Nym is will usually lose their pearling when they get their mature plumage if they are male.
my female looks like a male, but is definitely a girl. her cheek spots are bright, her head is yellow, and she does one whistle plus her little squeeks and squaks, but nothing compared to my boy. i think it is so bizarre when people try to tell other people what their pet is or isn't, when they have no idea what they are talking about. your girl is adorable! great video :D
I have a female like you, still with spots and bright red cheeks and her crest does all sorts of things, how long did it take yours to whistle, mines only young but no signs of it so far but I dont mind i still love her, shes awesome if a little grumpy!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Dunno who DNA "proved" your bird, but definetely someone with no clue about cockatiels. A female cockatiel does NOT have bright orange cheekspots, it can NOT lay it's top down the way tour bird does, and it does NOT whistle the way yours is trying to, so sorry but whoever prooved your bird is WRONG! You have a gorgeous little BOY. There's one more tell-tell sign in cockatiels. Males will, loose the horisontal stripes on the tail and on the triangle just above, females stay striped!
@vibria7000 im sorry but if you would like to come and see my FEMALE cockatiel for yourself then i would be happy to prove you wrong. as i keep stating, in her mutation (which is her colouring) females stay with the pearls and have bright red cheeks. and a DNA test is done by taking a small amount of blood and sending it to a lab to be tested, same as with humans! female cockatiels CAN whistle (it is rare but it happens) and female cockatiels CAN move their crest. im sorry that you cannot read.
@nightengaleprincess My cockatiel looks just like her! I she was said to be 4-6 weeks old when i bought her ,birthdate June 26,1998. i dropper fed her. Faith always felt like a girl 2me. She is 13 now and has had 2 clutches but no DNA test. She looks exactly like your tiel & can flatten her crest just like her friend/lover, my Moms normal gray tiel Charlie. She doesn't whistle sing though just little whistles like when Daddy my husband comes home. She appears to have a crush on him .
@vibria7000 oh and removing your comment doesnt mean that i didnt see it. just because you have had cockatiels for 22 years doesnt mean you know a damn thing about them. you can own a car for that long and still have no idea how to change the oil!!!
@vibria7000 there are some cockatiel colourings that girls have orange checks. look at the typical gray cockatiel, the male has bright orange while the female has orange though not as bright. with boy cockatiel when they wolf whistle there is a longer sound and with girls they squwak and this cockatiel, nym, is doing a wolf whistle but using squwak like sounds. i know the difference between the two since i own both male and female and i listen to them sing/squwak all the time ^-^
@vibria7000 There are some females who will whistle like the bird in the video and actually sing. Yeah, a lot more males do the singing, but there are some females who do it, too. I used to have a female who did know how to whistle like that for a little bit when she was younger, but I didn't keep up with her practice, but she did make that sorta sound like the bird in the video before.
@vibria7000 - Male cockatiels also don't keep their pearls! (Cute tiels, btw!)
@nightengaleprincess What a gorgeous girl! I have a hen that either whistles or says "pretty bird" but it's not quite as clear as a male cockatiel. Yes, she has bright orange cheek patches! And yes, a bright clear face, too! (she's a light pied) No DNA sexing required - she laid eggs! So yes, I believe the DNA results for Nym! (not that any are required!)
I've heard of other female cockatiels picking up words, too!
@vibria7000 actually you are wrong. some females do have bright orange cheekspots depending on the coloration, this bird, a pearl is a female; only females keep the pearling and have bright orange cheek patches, it can lay it's top down they all can, and both sexes can whistle, otherwise how would they communicate?
@vibria7000 the bird store that sold usour cockatiel told us that if the baby birds tale is spotted when it grows up it is a female...mine is a male! pretty bird!!
i thought female cockatiel are more quite, i have two female cockatiel there sometimes quite, does it takes a long time for female cocktiels to whistle
My cockatiel is a female with the bright yellow colors and orange cheekies too.... I know because she has started to lay eggs (after about two years of think she was a boy). She whistles but doesn't really imitate anything.
@KJ7FrozenHeart you obviously havent read any of the below comments or my video description. cheek patches have NOTHING to do with whether a bird is male or female. the cheek patches have even less to do with sexing a bird when it is a mutation like Nym. she has been DNA'd FEMALE. SHE whistles.
How do you get them to be vocal? I have gotten a hand raised female (said to be female, getting tests done in the near future) She loves being held, Been trying to get her to make some noise while im holding her (by giving her peices of food, talking to her, but nothing) Btw, Very beautiful bird you have! I also have a pearl cockatiel!
Does your bird have a v shape under it's tail becoz I have the same one but his/her cheeks is orangey color not red. Any one know if it's a female or male for mine becoz I want to breed it
@nightengaleprincess Sweeeet! When I was younger I was a HUGE anime fan, I dabbled in FMA, it was good. I really only watch Cowboy Bebop now though, but I secretly wish I could watch all that anime again.
@ClarinetFace doooo iiiiitttttt. i go back and watch sailor moon and things like samurai pizza cats and you sit there and realise how bad the animation was compared to today!!!! scary...
I have a female tiel and she imitates other birds and car alarms, lol. I wish I could teach her that, but she does things on her own. Your bird is too cute and sweet for words thank you for posting.
ok ok fine, i didn't want to insult you or anything. It's just that i have never seen a female that can whistle or talk before. And im impressed, i don't want to fight.
@Gabyhipnotic i dont want to fight either!!! hahahaha. its just realllllyyyy hard to try to convince people that she indeed is a she!! if you saw her you would just know it straight away. but yes she does whistle and shes learning to imitate. she barks when shes pissed off its so cute. she flattens herself out, gives the "evil eye" and goes "BARK!".. she sounds like a yappy dog hahaha
You could do an experiment, buy (or borrow) a female and put them in the same cage. See what happens, if he starts to whistle at her, he is a male. If he doesn't he is just a loner, i had one that was just like that, he would only whistle and interact with humans and his reflection.
@Gabyhipnotic i have a male that heart wings and sings towards her and she assumes the position. she also has been DNA proven as female twice. what more proof could you want that the bird i have is indeed female?
I haven't read anything, i am an experienced breeder since i was 5. So i know a LOT about cockatiels and females can't whistle, only males can do that. But you are right about the crest. But males usually have longer crests. I have never seen one with a shorter crest....only young ones.
@Gabyhipnotic some females can and do whistle. not very many (its very rare) but some can. not to get anyones hopes up of having a female that can do it but a friends female tiel can whistle the star wars theme and has raised two clutches with two different proven males so we know shes a female.
@totallyrad210 im sorry you think this but Nym is female. she is a visual mutation (Pearl) that only exists in females over the age of one year old. male Pearls do not have this patterning after one year of age.
No offense, but your'e wrong. Females don't whistle, this is a male. Females don't lower their crest unless they feel threatened......and males have longer crests.
@Gabyhipnotic im sorry but i dont know what you have been reading because it is all wrong. females can whistle, its not very often but they can learn. the crest is a gestural tool, flat means relaxed, upright means threatened or excited. you wouldnt want to walk around all day waving your arms to show your happy right? neither do they. males do not have longer crests. my males crest is less than 3cm from end of feather to tip, my females is over 5cm.
my bird he is called jojo lol hes only a year old and he talks/sings and he does the wolf whistle HE DOES ALL SORTS OF whistles and he says ALOT to lol simetimes we cant get him to shut up
my cockatiel got the wolf whistle in a day. he was so proud of himself, he would wolf whistle nonstop for a week before he got tired of. now he doesn't do it quite so much
@elaichri Males are the most common whistlers/singers, but females are known to learn small whistles like the wolf whistle. They tend to do that when they want something(Females).
@icehawkNZ she started to make the odd little noises they do when learning at around 1 year old but never fully wolf whistled until she was 2 years. she'll turn 3 in september this year and shes just started to make another noise!! she now barks like my neighbours jack russell.
do you have a vid/picture of it anywhere? if it is a standard WF, males will have a grey body and white cheeks (where normal ones would have the yellow/red), females are dark grey all over their head and they never develop cheek patches. also males will look like females until they are around 8mths old.
mutation birds: pieds (spotty looking coloured feathers, pink and black nails, wing flights and tail is a mix of solid white and grey) cannot be sexed visually they need to be DNA'd by your vet. pearls like my Nym (scalloped edging on feathers) are female if they still have their pearls after 1-1 1/2 years of age, males will moult out their patterns. Sere my other cockatiel is a Pearl Pied Whiteface and hes lost his pearls but he once had the same feather effects as Nym.
my bird is female. she is a pearl mutation and she is over 2 years old, thus making her female. male pearls lose their markings around the one year moult, have a look at Sere. hes male and he used to look like her just in shades of grey and white. but thankyou for your comment. also most females moult out their tail bars so its useless in the sexing of cockatiels.
the orange cheeks have nothing to do with gender. they are present in males and females alike. the brightness depends on the mutation of the bird not the sex. Nym is a pearl mutation over 2 years old hence making her female. read above comment for further information
in this videos, my female cockatiel tries to Whistle too... she has dna too

Gabyhipnotic 1 year ago
@Gabyhipnotic no problems! like i said its just so hard to try to convince people via the internet of certain truths LOL.
nightengaleprincess 1 year ago
ok ok fine, i didn't want to insult you or anything. It's just that i have never seen a female that can whistle or talk before. And im impressed, i don't want to fight.
Gabyhipnotic 1 year ago
@Gabyhipnotic i dont want to fight either!!! hahahaha. its just realllllyyyy hard to try to convince people that she indeed is a she!! if you saw her you would just know it straight away. but yes she does whistle and shes learning to imitate. she barks when shes pissed off its so cute. she flattens herself out, gives the "evil eye" and goes "BARK!".. she sounds like a yappy dog hahaha
nightengaleprincess 1 year ago
@nightengaleprincess ARE YOU WAETCHING FMA XD!!!!
johnnydog12 1 year ago
@Gabyhipnotic mine is a female, AND it sings, too!
warofthewalruses 1 year ago
You could do an experiment, buy (or borrow) a female and put them in the same cage. See what happens, if he starts to whistle at her, he is a male. If he doesn't he is just a loner, i had one that was just like that, he would only whistle and interact with humans and his reflection.
Gabyhipnotic 1 year ago
@Gabyhipnotic i have a male that heart wings and sings towards her and she assumes the position. she also has been DNA proven as female twice. what more proof could you want that the bird i have is indeed female?
nightengaleprincess 1 year ago
I haven't read anything, i am an experienced breeder since i was 5. So i know a LOT about cockatiels and females can't whistle, only males can do that. But you are right about the crest. But males usually have longer crests. I have never seen one with a shorter crest....only young ones.
Gabyhipnotic 1 year ago
@Gabyhipnotic some females can and do whistle. not very many (its very rare) but some can. not to get anyones hopes up of having a female that can do it but a friends female tiel can whistle the star wars theme and has raised two clutches with two different proven males so we know shes a female.
nightengaleprincess 1 year ago
sorry but thats not a female cockatiel its a male, gabyhipnotic is right .
totallyrad210 1 year ago
@totallyrad210 im sorry you think this but Nym is female. she is a visual mutation (Pearl) that only exists in females over the age of one year old. male Pearls do not have this patterning after one year of age.
nightengaleprincess 1 year ago
No offense, but your'e wrong. Females don't whistle, this is a male. Females don't lower their crest unless they feel threatened......and males have longer crests.
Gabyhipnotic 1 year ago
@Gabyhipnotic im sorry but i dont know what you have been reading because it is all wrong. females can whistle, its not very often but they can learn. the crest is a gestural tool, flat means relaxed, upright means threatened or excited. you wouldnt want to walk around all day waving your arms to show your happy right? neither do they. males do not have longer crests. my males crest is less than 3cm from end of feather to tip, my females is over 5cm.

08tellie 1 year ago
my cockatiel got the wolf whistle in a day. he was so proud of himself, he would wolf whistle nonstop for a week before he got tired of. now he doesn't do it quite so much
zerordieb87 1 year ago
@elaichri Males are the most common whistlers/singers, but females are known to learn small whistles like the wolf whistle. They tend to do that when they want something(Females).
TraceurDOc 1 year ago
@TraceurDOc exactly right! Nym only wolf whistles when she wants someone to touch her head.

how old was she when she learned to wolf whistle ? our 4 month old pied pearl girl is trying hard but not quite getting it.
icehawkNZ 1 year ago
@icehawkNZ she started to make the odd little noises they do when learning at around 1 year old but never fully wolf whistled until she was 2 years. she'll turn 3 in september this year and shes just started to make another noise!! she now barks like my neighbours jack russell.
nightengaleprincess 1 year ago
She has beautiful pearls! I have a pearly baby and I hope it's female so it doesn't lose the pretty spots on her back. Nym is so pretty :)

I have a white faced cockatiel how do i tell what sex it is because I didnt know it was different for mutations
rebecca665 2 years ago
do you have a vid/picture of it anywhere? if it is a standard WF, males will have a grey body and white cheeks (where normal ones would have the yellow/red), females are dark grey all over their head and they never develop cheek patches. also males will look like females until they are around 8mths old.
nightengaleprincess 2 years ago
mutation birds: pieds (spotty looking coloured feathers, pink and black nails, wing flights and tail is a mix of solid white and grey) cannot be sexed visually they need to be DNA'd by your vet. pearls like my Nym (scalloped edging on feathers) are female if they still have their pearls after 1-1 1/2 years of age, males will moult out their patterns. Sere my other cockatiel is a Pearl Pied Whiteface and hes lost his pearls but he once had the same feather effects as Nym.
nightengaleprincess 2 years ago
That Cockatiel is Male Females do not have that bright colouring on their face
rebecca665 2 years ago
Nym is female. the colouring on the face doesnt matter for mutation birds. it only works for standard grey male and female birds.
nightengaleprincess 2 years ago
omg,my male cockatiel names Nym too!

at young ages the bars are helpful :D
its how i figured out the difference between my male and female
HAWK1506 2 years ago
males have the bars too until they reach around 6 months so its reliable but only to a certain extent.
nightengaleprincess 2 years ago
thats a male
you can usually tell by their tails
if there are lots of bars on the tail then its a good indication its a female
so unless your bird has laid an egg im sure its a male :D but thats just me and you have a cute bird
HAWK1506 2 years ago
my bird is female. she is a pearl mutation and she is over 2 years old, thus making her female. male pearls lose their markings around the one year moult, have a look at Sere. hes male and he used to look like her just in shades of grey and white. but thankyou for your comment. also most females moult out their tail bars so its useless in the sexing of cockatiels.
nightengaleprincess 2 years ago
thats a male by the way hence the orange cheeks
thechronic420420 2 years ago
the orange cheeks have nothing to do with gender. they are present in males and females alike. the brightness depends on the mutation of the bird not the sex. Nym is a pearl mutation over 2 years old hence making her female. read above comment for further information
