Tony's a little bit like that little kid with a great vocabulary that hasn't yet learned to control the intensity of his voice and yells everything he says.
I'm probably one of the only people with the proof to back up my drumming knowledge ( just look at the covers on my channel) and i tell u for sure that jojo has more technical ability and rhythmic independence then tony. don't go off of this video because you can't hear much and neither really pushed the envelope. search their other videos and you will see.
that I will give you. But one thing Tony has over JoJo is power. JoJo kills him in intricate technique, but then again they both have their own individual styles. Tony has to be one of the Top 5 drummers in the world, with Jo being right there with him. Drumming isn't so much about technique though. The "groove" is what it's really all about. If you can't hold a groove, technique means nothing. Jo can hold the groove, but doesn't show it much.
there both beast on the drums but i am 26 and can relate to tony playing s more. ITS MORE UR TASTE ! when it comes down to great drummers. stop comparing and enjoy. if y'all cats were real drummers u would not compare but appreciate this its art we all approach the kit differently but this is a great vid though
@jaylinkx You're right but, what Jojo Mayer was doing was rythmically complex and fast, Royster just rips the drums, so there is a difference in the knowledge they both have. It's normal, just look at the age difference. Either way, they're both phenomenal.
@13spite13 i feel you on this check out some of tony's solos from his DVD pure energy you will see/hear more complex times etc. Understand what the drums are meant for. To keep timing in a song period, half of the people at some of these events don't know what a rudiment is u have cats like carter beauford Jerome flood Nat townsley that in their simplicity your blown away by it. Then u have cats like Chris Dave and Thomas lang who sound like there falling down a flight of stairs at times.
@jaylinkx Dude, I've already checked out a lot of Royster's stuff, and I have pure respect for both, I'm not bashing anyone at all. I just find Mayer's knowledge of musical structure better, that's it man. And I know what you're saying, check out Gavin Harisson! Quite impressive blend of musicianship and creative structure. And Bozzio obviously.
Wow, did this really happened in Singapore? How come I as a drummer fan, never knew there was a drum fest! There's even Jojo Mayer, how cool is that with him in Singapore???????!!!!
my opinion goes to jojo, he was dropping 32nd flam taps between ride and snare at a tempo around 125 bpm (my guess), that is power and control man! tony didn't really break to far out of some 16th note variations, i mean he did some 8th note triplet grooves and maybe some 5's? couldn't tell quality isn't to great. Its crazy how jojo was doing 32nd note triplets all over the place and then hitting those 16th note accents. stylistically tho you will never come to a conclusion as to who is better.
think about the age difference though...tony is such a monster....and a young monster at that. its crazy how good he is. but just think about all of the damn knowledge inside of jojo's head
think about the age difference though...tony is such a monster....and a young monster at that. its crazy how good he is. but just think about all of the damn knowledge inside of jojo's head
Jojo is way more technical but Tony is louder u can't do the stuff jojo is doing if u r playing as loud as Tony jojo uses his wrist and fingers. Tony uses his arms for more power
Just read the comments and realize that some people think one guy was way better than the other guy and an equal amount of people think it was the other way around. Makes me laugh that everyone thinks they are right. People will never grow up on this shit. The only way you can measure who's better is give them the same amount of time to learn the same difficult drum peices and see who has it perfect. Another words no one scored a knock-out here so stop your exagerations!
dont confuse age or experience with greatness. we're talking about how they did in this vid, not in their lives. i go for tony. much creative, never a dull moment, very precise, insanely difficult, and that offbeat if just genius.
also appears to me jojo's thinking ok what should i do next? his ending wasn't really the best. tony's just flowing.
don't give me that both drummers won, personal taste, and all that crap. we all know that.
@RestDayer hmmm u probably heard of jojo mayer just now, let me tell you, he is the only guy in the world who;s left hand can match up to buddy richs...thats got to say something
jojo wins in technicality, timing, and skill all day. also, regardless of playing ability, i'd automatically have to give it to the drummer who doesn't have flames on their drumset...
@abhimuscat jojo can definitely outplay everyone of those drummers, in a drum "battle" except for one man: gary novak, the secret gem of all drummers, gary would destroy everyone including jojo, his fills are beyond godlike
@abhimuscat weckl can...his shit with the elektric band really lets u know what hes capable, jojo is an alltime great, but he still doesnt have the vocabulary that dave does...weckl can really just play anything that comes to his mind, he is beyond being just a drummer, is a real great musician that simply uses the drums as his voice...jojo is more lick based..not to say their some of the greatest licks ive ever heard in my life
two different styles its rlly all a matter of which style caters to ur personal musical preference more. for me its personally tony simply because we have a similar pocket and feel when we drum
no matter what anybody can say, tony was damn possessed on this one, he literally went the fuck off. and of course jojo is just straight nasty. give em both their props, they were havin fun up there doin their thing.
Its crazy to judge these two and say one is way better than the other.. did you guys not see what they just did. and to say one drummer was grooving this better than the other is crazy because what exactly is ur def of grooving? if we all felt it the same way it wouldnt be unique, The both did incredibly A+ drumming and i just cant say one is better than tthe other after seeing this. u have to be bias to sit there and say that...
Royster's awesome but cmon, Jojo has been drumming circles around everyone since the 80s and he's obviously got better since. Nobodies surpassing til he dies
Jojo has been living and playing alot longer... You can hear it. There is always room for improvement ... God is NO respect of persons. Meaning, your skin tone(black, red, or yellow) has nothing to do with the ability or the gift(s) God placed in us. I love to hear and watch Tony play. However, Jojo may be a stepping stone for Tony. I believe Tony is humble enough to say so.
They have both put in an enormous amount of work into thier respective talents.
I must say I really think Jojo is more skilled technically and appeals to me more creatively as well.
That is coming from someone who has enormous respect for Ton's playing and abilities. Oh yes, I also think music as some sort of contest or batlle is a crock of shit.
@TheDice2008 Agreed!!! Both solos had a completely different feel. Jojo had more of a Jazz feel Tony had more a rock feel. Wasn't a battle just the two guys playing what they feel and what they feel is differen't so how can you judge??? Plus I personally feel that they whole video should be shown IFF (if and only iff) you are going to judge. Much love to both artists...
@bht97 Yes that's definately true overall. My statement about Jojo having more of a jazz feel was for just this particular video. But overall, from what I've seen, you're absolutely correct.
Chris Dave, for ex, is approaching Jojos M.O. of extreme dexterity, superb musicality and grooves...
Royster just doesn't quite have that trio like either of those two, all due respect. Royster is a great showman and can groove like hell, but his musicality is sometimes lacking top-notch like the all-time greats.
Guys - black, white, french, american, purple, red, green - whatever - ALL I KNOW IS NO ONE WHO HAS POSTED ON THIS THREAD, INCLUDING ME IS ANYWHERE CLOSE TO EITHER OF THESE GUYS. WHEN YOU GET THAT GOOD - THEN ENLIGHTEN US WITH ALL THE OPINIONS YOU WOULD LIKE.
@popemobile15 that's a pretty childish way of thinking. you can't ulitmately say that one drummer is better than another. they have their own pros and cons in their styles.
@popemobile15 I dnt know about jojo and the words Best EVER!...They all learned from buddy rich...the only person who was 82 years old still playing and still faster than both of them.If u dnt believe me go watch his vids.
@popemobile15 Exactly! Royster is just popular because he could play at such an early age, BUT, he did not progress like people thought he would. He's hardly better than when he was a kid.
tony royster might be good but compared to jojo mayer his chops dont compare bacause all it is, is just cymbal but jojo on the other hand hits things up
im sorry but tony royster junior at 12 is better than jojo, nothin against jojo but tony is a fuckin beast. this video is a bad representation of his playing tho
honestly whoever says jojo mayer is better has down syndrome odds are none of u even play drums.Tony Royster is better in so many ways look at all his videos and look at jojo mayers
@Pearlprodigy619 don't you think its a bit stupid that your comparing a difference in opinion to downs syndrome? bit offensive for no obvious reason. tbh i doubt the drummers themselves care about all this shite.
ROFL "Pearlprodigy" take yourself a bit seriously, too? Most professional drummers, including myself, disagree with you. Tony is a fine drummer and made a nice career for himself, though. Have a nice day.
the only people that compare musicians are people on hear that cant play better than either one so unless you have a major sponsor of your own the comment really doesn't mean anything
"So let's all be real. There aren't too many cats on earth that can hang with Tony, and JoJo is not one of them. Tony wasn't even really goin hard, and he still killed it. JoJo is super nice, but y'all need to be real with yo-selves. He ain't seein TONY."
Tony Royster AND Jojo Mayer. not vs. Music isn't a competition. Both play great. Both make a great living. Everyone's a winner. Especially the people who get to listen.
So let's all be real. There aren't too many cats on earth that can hang with Tony, and JoJo is not one of them. Tony wasn't even really goin hard, and he still killed it. JoJo is super nice, but y'all need to be real with yo-selves. He ain't seein TONY.
Jojo was once young and free in his 20s and 30s, much like Tony. However, Jojo was a pro jazz player in his teens and 20s touring Europe. Tony has done his thing too, but not developing the finesse and touch Jojo was required for the jazz, blues chops.
Nah man. You must not play the drums, because it's really obvious that the only area that Tony excels Jojo in is sheer power. JoJo's solo is by far the more interesting and varied, thematically, dynamically, technically, etc.
Tony Royster's solo is a bunch of double kick with recognizable patterns on top. JoJo's solo is far more fluid. Just watch their hands. JoJo's hand chops are WAY more developed than Tony's.
I would have to say Jojo. They're both amazing, but the way Jojo grooves is just gah, amazing, and fundamentally, it's awesome. They're both incredible though.
@aj502 It's Ok, Music is Art, no a horse racing, ya know, but even so, there are levels ... and music speaks itself... no trying to convince anyone, it just flooooow....
Let's all remember how much older Jojo is before anyone judges who's better. They both have different styles. It's impossible to say who's better because they're strong in different points. Bottom line: they're both incredible drummers. If someone downs either of them, then they are extremely ignorant and moronic.
Tony's a little bit like that little kid with a great vocabulary that hasn't yet learned to control the intensity of his voice and yells everything he says.

anyone who thinks royster is better is a moron, sorry. Jojo Mayer is legitimately one of the most talented musicians alive today and possibly ever

@popemobile15 And in your "humble" opinion, Tony Royster Jr. isn't?
littledrummerboy420 1 year ago
@littledrummerboy420 Royster is amazing but Jojo Mayer is the best
popemobile15 1 year ago
@popemobile15 I'm going to respectfully disagree. But I do agree that both are incredible.

@popemobile15 but you cant forget ringo starr

@popemobile15 I agree but you don't need to call them a moron... everyone's entitled to their opinion.
nin456 11 months ago
@popemobile15 that's a pretty childish way of thinking. you can't ulitmately say that one drummer is better than another. they have their own pros and cons in their styles.

@911violentagro that's odd because your face is pretty childish

@popemobile15 I dnt know about jojo and the words Best EVER!...They all learned from buddy rich...the only person who was 82 years old still playing and still faster than both of them.If u dnt believe me go watch his vids.
brandon288 10 months ago
@brandon288 whoa thanks I had no idea who buddy rich, the single most popular jazz drummer in history, was.
popemobile15 10 months ago
@popemobile15 your opinion
RestDayer 10 months ago
@popemobile15 Exactly! Royster is just popular because he could play at such an early age, BUT, he did not progress like people thought he would. He's hardly better than when he was a kid.
arthurkitchen 10 months ago
tony royster might be good but compared to jojo mayer his chops dont compare bacause all it is, is just cymbal but jojo on the other hand hits things up
YellowInABottle1 1 year ago
im sorry but tony royster junior at 12 is better than jojo, nothin against jojo but tony is a fuckin beast. this video is a bad representation of his playing tho
snailswigbee 1 year ago
Anonymous ur an idiot shut up listen to his chops JOjO has got nothing on that brother hahah xD downs syndrome
Pearlprodigy619 1 year ago
honestly whoever says jojo mayer is better has down syndrome odds are none of u even play drums.Tony Royster is better in so many ways look at all his videos and look at jojo mayers
Tony Royster > JoJo Mayer = obvious Solution
Pearlprodigy619 1 year ago
@Pearlprodigy619 don't you think its a bit stupid that your comparing a difference in opinion to downs syndrome? bit offensive for no obvious reason. tbh i doubt the drummers themselves care about all this shite.
angrychipmunk99 1 year ago
@Pearlprodigy619
ROFL "Pearlprodigy" take yourself a bit seriously, too? Most professional drummers, including myself, disagree with you. Tony is a fine drummer and made a nice career for himself, though. Have a nice day.

JoJo is hands down a better drummer, and thats not taking anything away from Royster, JoJo is just in a league of his own
awmoyes 1 year ago
the only people that compare musicians are people on hear that cant play better than either one so unless you have a major sponsor of your own the comment really doesn't mean anything

"So let's all be real. There aren't too many cats on earth that can hang with Tony, and JoJo is not one of them. Tony wasn't even really goin hard, and he still killed it. JoJo is super nice, but y'all need to be real with yo-selves. He ain't seein TONY."
LOL
Noob non-drummer.

i don't why everyone makes music a competition... there really shouldn't be a battle, it's really who you prefer
armedwithturtles 1 year ago
jojo has ffarrr more technique....royster is good at hittin hard and fast...but i didnt see any real technique..maybe alot of ego?
jdemers413 1 year ago
Tony Royster AND Jojo Mayer. not vs. Music isn't a competition. Both play great. Both make a great living. Everyone's a winner. Especially the people who get to listen.
NicThornsberryDrums 1 year ago 2
jojo is a lot more subtle in his playing, tony just goes all out, he would be an amazing rock drummer ^^.
both amazing drummers, but i prefer jojo's sound :)
drummerman55 1 year ago
@drummerman55 so true tony has the energetic youth but jojo is just a technique monster ^^

@palakiller we can all learn so much from both these drummers :) competitive comparisons bring nothing worthwhile anyone ^_^

@FrieLegos
Jojo was once young and free in his 20s and 30s, much like Tony. However, Jojo was a pro jazz player in his teens and 20s touring Europe. Tony has done his thing too, but not developing the finesse and touch Jojo was required for the jazz, blues chops.
PositivelyBored 1 year ago
@PositivelyBored agreed...
FrieLegos 1 year ago
@guitarsoul44

Craziness31 1 year ago
I would say: Travis don't exists compared to both, actually...
Tortoisech 1 year ago
Why do these always turn into a "MY guy is better than YOUR guy and you're an idiot..." spamfest?
At this level you can't consider one perseon "better" than the other, you can only say who YOU like more...
It's like comparing Buddy Rich, Mike Portnoy, Steward Copeland, Vinnie Colaiuta, Neil Pert, Bun E. Carlos, John Bonham, etc/etc/etc.....
Good luck trying to convince anyone that one is "better" than the other...
Bith the above are awesome in their own respects.

@aj502 It's Ok, Music is Art, no a horse racing, ya know, but even so, there are levels ... and music speaks itself... no trying to convince anyone, it just flooooow....
Tortoisech 1 year ago
Let's all remember how much older Jojo is before anyone judges who's better. They both have different styles. It's impossible to say who's better because they're strong in different points. Bottom line: they're both incredible drummers. If someone downs either of them, then they are extremely ignorant and moronic.
