  • what i love about this is the fact that judi dench is sang it so simply. She is allowing the character to come through simply by singing, and by doing so, allows the piece to take on a clear, emotional lament. This is definitely one of my favorite renditions of one of my favorite songs of Sondheim! Simply beautiful.

  • Great performance. I love this song.

  • Simply. The best.

  • Oh goodness

  • I am in tears!!!

  • Amazing

  • well maybe next year,,,farewell my love

  • Jamesbonb's gran'ma 007

  • WOW.

  • Judy please act but do not sing...

  • Oh, wow.

  • I love Bernadette Peters, but I have to say I love Judi Dench here

  • only silence can describe this beauty

  • That is the best performance of the song i have heard. She lives every word. Judi is atrue acting giant

  • A Master Class!!!

    Alan Lowe

  • No. Glynis's version is still the best for me.

  • Fabulous.

  • I've seen many people sing this song. That's all they do, just sing it, hit the notes at all the right places. Judi Dench lives this piece. It's not just about the music. It's about a conflicted woman whose heart is breaking. This is how musical theatre should be done.

  • Magnificent - no other words can describe it

  • indeed the single greatest musical theater performance ever captured on film.

  • i love her....

  • Being an actor myself and having worked with the best in the world, I must say that once again Judi Dench humbles me to be an artist. She shows what an artist does and where they can take you simply by being and listening. It is heart breaking.

  • I agree with all. Many have performed this song well, but no one has captured the subtlety and emotion of the song as well as Judi. It may not be the best "sung" but it certainly the best acted!! (Okay maybe Glynis Johns was as good.) And yes in her 2010 version she proves that she has "IT". I think it her sense of language from Shakespeare that gives her the detail of inflection and sense of rhythm.

  • I cried with Her while watching it...

  • fab fab fab!!!!!!!

  • No one can beat Judi Dench at this song, she plays it so beautifully!

  • That's Laurence Guittard with Judi.

  • yes it is the best, there is no doubt

  • Bucket of tears....Filled with so much emotion!!

  • During the same South Bank Show it showed her rehearsing the song. She sang it with enourmous emotion with tears rolling down her face. As the last note finnished she just shook her hrad and said "I won't do it like that"

Have you got that piece of the show, I have allways wanted to see it again.

  • Very moving

  • She says she always plays the part she has such exquiste timing never misses a beat it is like she is the part. Way to go Judi !

  • Q kill him for england hahaha let's get on with our mission.. Dr Evils back.

  • There's a clip of her doing this song on a British talk show during the run of this performance. Check it out. It's unbelievable.

  • Now THAT's ACTING!!

  • From Bowles to Arnfeldt

    Judi has never mis-stepped

she was to be Grizabella in Cats

but broke her achilles tendon in rehearsal

  • It may very well be just me, but i've watched Dame Judi here and in 2010 Proms, and I believe she has improved in every way during the 15 years in between. Her voice becomes more sensual , her looks highly improve, and her demeaner is perfection....What a TALENT! Oh...why does it seem as though so many GREAT actresses and actors come from across the pond? Can't we produce these kinds of beautiful moments and performers...why is this happening in our country? Sorry. I do love the USA! I do!

  • @kasha1932 Nah, I just think the audio is better on that video.

  • OVERWHELMED am I...Dame Judi was wonderful back in 1995, but I do believe this song is sung with just a bit more emotion at the 2010 Proms... This voice is just a bit stronger...amazing what a difference 15 years makes...but that TALENT was always and is always SUPREME! DAME JUDI...BRAVA! and again I say, may you act/sing as long as you would like, because some of us will always enjoy and appreciate you...always! Thanks so much for posting this for us...and thank you too YOU TUBE!

  • Dame Judy is one of the great performing artists of the 20th/21st centuries. I feel priviledged to have shared space on the planet with her.

  • Beautiful.

  • i saw this for the first time about eight years ago when i went to new york for musical theatre training. we had a class where we watched videos of some of the greatest musical theatre performances over the years.

this was the last video one day. the class of twenty or so sat completely still and silent throughout this clip. at the end, every single person, including the instructor, was crying.

i believe this to be the single greatest musical theater performance ever captured on film.

  • @sirenthere So you went to AMDA too? Did you watch this in Philip George's class?

  • @GreenEyedBlake Sho nuff!

  • stunning!

  • The man playing Fredrik is Laurence Guittard, who originated the role of Count Carl Magnus in the OBC of this show.

  • Thank you for this post. Dame Judi is wonderful. She sings this part so wonderfully, with so much emotion.
