@MrPrazil You do if you want to keep anything except for floating plants. The substrate anchors plant roots and keeps the plants from floating to the top of the aquarium. A planted tank with no substrate would be ugly IMO.
@MrPrazil Substrate is the material on the bottom of the tank. I assume you mean a nutrient- and bacteria-rich substrate. The answer is, "no." If you choose to use regular gravel or sand, you have to take extra care to make sure your plants are getting needed nutrients. You can do this with a once-a-day liquid plant fertilizer. Additional nutrient tabs to place in the gravel will help as well. If you're just starting out with planted tanks, keep the costs low until you know you like it.
@bibinthomas1985 HC aka hemianthus callitrichoides aka dwarf baby tears. 2wpg, moderate co2, nutrient rich substrate, shallow tank depths work best. Thats the general requirements. Even though you didn't ask for them XD
I love this store, the workers are truely experienced with the hobbie and offer great advice, not to mention they have just about every freshwater fish you could want for you tank! I plan on going there this weekend, to ask for advice on how to create a nice planted aquarium.
I just returned home after a trip to San Francisco where I made sure to visit this shop. I could have cried, it is so beautiful in there! The staff were incredibly polite, let me take photos, and answered my detailed questions. Anyone who has a chance to visit the shop should :)
I think its Glossostigma elatinoides, Hemianthus has much smaller leaves. The grassy plants some form of elocharis probably. look for mail order aquarium plants in google.
The natural light can benifit the plant life in that aquarium, but can also promote more algea growth! If I were you I will move It a couple more feet away! The tank looks very nice!
i'll make ur face look ugghh! hahaha i bet ur on ur computer in ur parents house in ur room painted with winnie the pooh and teletubbies and flowers all around and little rabbits dancing around.......fag

GREAT looking setup, almost no hoses, heaters, or other artificial looking stuff. But how many fish jump out each week and turn to fish-jerky?

I love tanks with an open top and no plastic rim, is this one acrylic?
These grassy field tanks make me think of new zeland, so tranquil and aesthetic.
