@paralies That's correct, and it wasn't loud at all. Here's the thing though, it was on a '92 Cherokee and those have quite a large catalytic converter which I'm convinced is why it's so quiet. I did the same thing on my current Grand Cherokee with the same motor and it was very loud (you can see my video), but the cat is about half the size of the one on the old XJ. The newer Cherokees share that small cat as well, so depending on what year yours is, your results may be quite different.
@MichaelRogersLive I actually did something different. I have California Exhaust on mine. Comes stock with 3 cats! Two directly off the manifold, and the one larger one by the muffler. I just took out the lower cat since there are no O2 Sensors near it and put in a super 40 muffler and added 2.5" pipe to the bumper. You can check out my exhaust video in my videos.
I have a 96 xj-but I am not into noise-especially in cab droning-but I like to go when needed. This is very surprising result. Maybe a straight through muffler will be ok, as opposed to stock.
It's always surprising to people when they find out. Which thrush do you have? On my last XJ I had a "thrush welded" that was a good flowmaster knock off, but it sounded no better than my cheap straight pipe. With a stock cat these 4.0 I6 motors just don't put out a lot of sound.
Let me get this straight, you just removed the muffler and replaced the tailpipe to the cat?
