Once again Spock and Bones are locked up in some dark cesspool whilst Kirk is shacked up in a love den with some big breasted blond bimbo with a bare mid drift. Oh the horrors of being captain.
I just read through a great many comments on this vid, and I'm amazed at the number of people that seem to think Spock is "hot". When I first watched this show in the late 60's and the first set of re-runs in the early 70's when I was in junior high, none, I mean absolutely zero females ever watched this show. The only person that was "hot" back in those days was David Cassidy, Keith on The Partridge Family.
They talk about the Prime Directive being in FULL FORCE but by the end of the episode, they break it big time by leaving the Romans with Federation technology, namely the phasers, tricorders and communicators they confiscated. Since they never explained any attempt to retrieve them, this constitutes a serious issue that was briefly discussed at the end of "A Piece of the Action".
I love how the writers have Capt. Kirk as the gauge for a good human being with McCoy as the emotional side of man and Spock as the logical side of man. Of course Spock and McCoy will be in constant flux and battle it out to win the soul of man.
John A. Kneubuhl, wrote the story for the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Bread and Circuses", although he did not receive screen credit in the finished episode. The idea for the show may have come from his experience at Roswell AFB. He was called in to help translate for a captured alien named Airl. You can read about it your self. The book is called: Alien Interview by Matilda O'Donnell MacElroy.
The "Prime Directive" is in full force, no identification of self or mission, no reference to space or other worlds with advance technologies, but, hey, let's beam down with phasers & tricorders exposed & dressed in completely alien clothing.
Why is the Kirk the only one that can wear a different type of shirt (excluding uniforms for when amassadors, etc. arrive). Maybe it's because he always ruins them.
The Prime Directive makes sense in TOS; just don't blatantly interfere with development. The way it is enforced in TNG is almost insidious...allowing a planet to be destroyed when covert Starfleet actions could save it.
"Rome had no sun worshipers..." 14:40 what a blatantly incorrect statement! Constantine comes to mind... the Sol Invictus... from Apollo from greek helios... Hail Sa'tan!
@ProcrastinatingGamer. No it was not controversial. Most Christians believe that if Christ came to our planet to forgive our sins he might go to other planets as well. When I was a kid and saw this ending for the first time it made me proud to be a Catholic. Gene Rodenberry tried to avoid religion he did not want to offend other religions. He let this pass because it dose not out right say that Jesus is God and it focuses on Jesus message of love and forgiveness.
C.S. Lewis made the same claim in the Narnia books and in the Space Trilogy--that if there are other worlds--which is its own separate debate--Christ would have gone to them as well. Food for thought.
If they had beamed them up in frount of the cameras there could have been some problems. "Prime Directive" The procouncle could have also said that the gods did something to them I guess.
@davidxrodriguez Uhm...no hon, look under my name on the comment...the green hand and the number to the right of it indicates how many people "voted up" the comment. Maybe you should think before you type.
Kirk is an ass. If you have sex with a slave who is ordered to please you, that is basically rape. Also, why must Spock and McCoy continue to hurt one another when they love each other so much!
It's kind of silly that Kirk, Spock, and McCoy didn't realize it was Christianity until Uhrah told them; everything pointed to it, they should have realized it!
Really? Did you know right off it was Christianity? This is a different planet. It is illogical to conclude that everyone born on our planet is born on others. You for get Spock and McCoy deal with life and facts all of their lives. Kirk is Christian but not a very good one. (Hello! All His Girl Friends!)
Uhura is Swahili and raised a good Christian that why she got it. If you know anything about that part of Africa you would know what I mean.
Perhaps, during the 1960's, they were still sorting through the facts. The Soviets were still hiding their horrific numbers and the Nazis hid or burned up a lot of their info.
They should invent some kind of codes by now so their crew can know they are in trouble and beam them up. Or stun everyone in the area. Or wear some subcutaneous communicators, lol.
Seems like in every episode, they forget previous lessons learned.

I love how Uhura's like, "I...think once called video..." and then Spock's like, "The coloquial term was television." I really shouldn't be laughing this hard...
The writers really bungled this McCoy says: "Rome had no Sun worshippers.".
Yet on every coin in the Roman Empire was printed "Solas Invictus" Hail the unconquerable Sun. Uh, perhaps they should have done a little more research.
I think that one black and white film shot was of the MIT campus definitely, probably stock footage. Exactly like the Roman Empire except that everyone speaks perfect colloquial American English instead of Latin or Italian and they have pensions for slaves. Nice how they tied the comment about Merrick failing out the Academy psych test with Kirk making the right split second decision to warn Scotty of the situation. Classic James Kirk my balls are bigger than yours move.
The most Christian episode of Star Trek; I love it!
Thanks for the enlightenment Lt. Nyota Uhura; you're not just a super damn diddily scrumptious piece of sweet chocolate, you're a woman who can enlighten and inform. **wow**
The ending is not silly or religious. It is simply historically logical. This world was a parallel of our Rome in every way except for the timing, and like it or not the introduction of Christ and his philosophies is a major part of that history. Not to include it would be as the doctor said illogical. Kirk's right, It's a fascinating era of history and irrefutably important to the development of our own history. That's fact, Christian Atheist or whatever you want to call yourself.
The Romans want some real entertainment then hide a camera in Spock and Dr. McCoy's cell and leave em there with nothing to argue about except a balogna sandwich.
good philosophy (the bones/spock scene discussing life and death and fear), good sub characters, good action, not too much shatner + alien girl action, bones gets some major lines, got both uhura & scotty. one of the best.
Y'know, they keep getting attacked by hostile guys with big guns, but they have their phasers the entire time. Are they not supposed to use them unless absolutely necessary?
Protecting yourself from hostile guys with big guns seems pretty necessary to me.
I think Kirk tried but they started shooting again. That would stop me from going after a better weapon. Expecially if I couldn't tell where the ambush was or how many may have weapons trained on me.
It's interesting to note that they had a black cameraman in the coliseum. They may have been barbaric, but at least they were integrated LOL! This episode was true to life, however, in pointing out that slavery has existed throughout history, in all cultures. In fact, although the US practiced slavery, it was actually the US that ended it, and pressured the rest of the world to end it too. For some reason, there is a powerful movement in this country aimed at keeping this fact a secret.
By the 18th century ships from Bristol and Liverpool set out loaded with trade goods which were exchanged in West Africa for slaves captured from deeper inland; they were transported, in conditions of inhuman crowding, through the infamous "middle passage" across the Atlantic, and were sold at considerable profit for labor in plantations; and there the ship loaded with the product of slave labor, such as sugar and rum, on their way back to England. Wikipedia, see Triangular Trade
Actually several countries abolished slavery before the USA; however, I understand what you're trying to say. Yes, there were countless people during and before the Civil War that were for slavery and practiced it; however, there were also thousands of Americans who gave their lives to abolish it. The tarnish of slavery have made the sacrifice of the union soldiers obsolete. Going against the norm, against what has always been is not easy, no matter one's morals.
Once again Spock and Bones are locked up in some dark cesspool whilst Kirk is shacked up in a love den with some big breasted blond bimbo with a bare mid drift. Oh the horrors of being captain.

So many of these Star Trek episodes were essestially the same:
(1) Kirk, Spock, McCoy and some redshirts beam down to a planet.
(2) They encounter some primitive culture who speak perfect English and manage to initially get the best of them.
(3) Spock and McCoy argue about a bunch of petty stuff.
(4) Kirk gets it on with some native babe in a tin-foil almost-nothing dress.
(5) They figure a way out of the mess and to hell with the Prime Directive.
(6) On to the next assignment!

18:30- Jeez, Spock looks gorgeous in
*anything* they decide to dress him with- even slate gray slave clothes!

The gangster clothing in "A piece of the action" is by far his best look up to this point. He was working that suit.

The United Kingdom abolished slave trade in 1102. Just FYI

@magicianspirit sorry to tell you - that was a reference to us! slaves with the illusion of rights, such as old-age pensions and free medical care.
