Pusuit of happiness is the pursuit of what each individual finds joy in, it's their definition that matters not yours. @nelsop2 I wouldn't deny that many of the Greeks were hedonists, but Aristotle and Plato included the common good in the definition of human happiness. Aristotle was as direct and to the point as he could get on that matter (in his usual dry style), and Plato proclaimed it most pointedly in the allegory of the cave (after one has the vision of the Good, he returns to the cave to save the ignorant who thought they knew what the good really was).

That is what needs to be maximized in the population and it's the freedom for people to make their own decision as to what happiness is to them that needs to be protected. So long as their pursuit of it doesn't interfere with others. Read John Rawls' theory of justice: Maximum freedom compatible with equal freedom for all.

If we leave it all to the individual (which even u would not agree to) horrible things would happen. @Couesnonfl Thomas Paine was only ONE Founder. He was not a Christian, nor was he atheist. In Age of Reason: "I believe in one God, and no more". He makes reference to God often, read Common Sense where he even quotes the Bible. Many of our Founders were wary of organized religion, but almost all were very religious. Washington who was generally close friends with Paine, was Episcopal. To say the Founders were not that religious is like saying the Beatles hardly ever spoke with British accents.

Rick Santorum believes the federal government should decide what a person's responsibilities and obligations are. That is a federalist. The term Statist was traditionally known during the late 1700's as "anti-federalist" which was what Thomas Jefferson was commonly referred to whereas James Madison wanted more federal power in the constitution because he was a federalist.

Too much freedom is not good for society, it's not good for individuals. Freedom with responsibility is key. Pusuit of happiness is the pursuit of what each individual finds joy in, it's their definition that matters not yours. Aristotle was as direct and to the point as he could get on that matter (in his usual dry style), and Plato proclaimed it most pointedly in the allegory of the cave (after one has the vision of the Good, he returns to the cave to save the ignorant who thought they knew what the good really was).

That is what needs to be maximized in the population and it's the freedom for people to make their own decision as to what happiness is to them that needs to be protected. So long as their pursuit of it doesn't interfere with others. Read John Rawls' theory of justice: Maximum freedom compatible with equal freedom for all.

If we leave it all to the individual (which even u would not agree to) horrible things would happen. Some people's perception of happiness (serial murder would be an extreme example) harms the community either by detracting from what they owe or otherwise. Santorum is sound here even if you do not agree with WHAT he would prohibit.

Im a libertarian, and mostly agree with Santorum. The fact is if you read the Founders you will find they are right-in-line with what Santorum is alluding to. They believed the level of freedom that we as libertarians want cannot survive if the people become immoral, selfish and irresponsible. That's not to say they wanted the FED GOVERNMENT to ENFORCE all morality w/ laws. States could decide where the line would be. They were Christians, and Christianity is about choice, not forced salvation.

@Couesnonfl Thomas Paine was only ONE Founder. He was not a Christian, nor was he atheist. In Age of Reason: "I believe in one God, and no more". He makes reference to God often, read Common Sense where he even quotes the Bible. Many of our Founders were wary of organized religion, but almost all were very religious. Washington who was generally close friends with Paine, was Episcopal. To say the Founders were not that religious is like saying the Beatles hardly ever spoke with British accents.

Not to say Jefferson was a saint, he committed adultery, was up to his ears in debt, and had slaves. But he was very religious, and very conscious of his mistakes. He even said he trembled at the thought of God judging him. He was just a man, like any of us, I would say he was a pretty awesome guy besides his shortcomings and flaws.

Rick Santorum believes the federal government should decide what a person's responsibilities and obligations are. That is a federalist. The term Statist was traditionally known during the late 1700's as "anti-federalist" which was what Thomas Jefferson was commonly referred to whereas James Madison wanted more federal power in the constitution because he was a federalist.

I believe you're confusing favoring States rights with Statism. A Statist believes in the power of the State (as concept, not as one of the political entities) to regulate people's property and decisions, that the State trumps individual rights. Paul is in favor of the sovereignty of the states, but that does not mean he favors The State over individual rights.
