Yep, JAS 39 Gripen isn't a samurai sword, it's a Swizz army knife with low maintenance / production costs with lots of room for modifications. Kinda like an IKEA built jet fighter. :P

On the US air force's webpage, one could read that they must have F-22 in next exercise in order to have a chance against GRIPEN and that this also applied against all other European fighters.
It was also stated that GRIPEN had to be the most cost effective fighter in the world.

To suggest that a scripted exercise proves the Gripen superior to any aircraft is silly.

Only the worlds biggest nations make fighterplanes: USA, Russia, China, Japan, Germany, France and the UK... and little Sweden. I think thats a great achivement. We also build the worlds most advanced stealth submarine :)
@mrjimbeam2009 I saw some graphs about how we had like 850 SAAB Lansen + Draken early/mid in the 70ies and around 600 Draken + Viggen early/mid in the 80ies. Now we only got 120 or so of the Gripens. And probably a much smaller capacity of actually getting them into the air if anything happens. End of soviet union has made some cuts ... Atleast Saab, Bofors, Hägglunds, ... is still around.
@JohanKH Yes but you should have in mind that 120 Gripens are equal to 360 other fighters, due to it´s multirole/swingrole capability. And since the 70´s and 80´s we now also have AEW&C (SAAB 340) and refueling tankers (C-130) within our airforce which greatly increases the operational capability. And one Gripen is ten times better than the US made F-16 Block. 50, according to results from Red Flag Alaska and Nellis =)

It was a Viggen that managed to get a lock-on on a SR-71 Blackbird, this was because the US always used a route between Gotland and Öland, two big island outside the eastern coast of Sweden. The Swedish Airforce patrolled the area.
The USAF sent a greetings card to the SAF because it's the first (and only) time a fighter has locked on a SR-71 =)

Despite heavy jamming from the SR-71, target illumination was maintained by feeding target location from ground-based radars to the fire-control computer in the Viggen. :D

However, you have to remember that the SR-71 had to fly a predictable pattern based on the politics of the time (and I really wouldn't like for them to have broken that pattern- with a cold war at its height and "itchy trigger fingers"). Red Flag Alaska and Nevada are not designed to be the USA against the world. America flies ALONGSIDE its allies, fighting a mock battle. To suggest that a scripted exercise proves the Gripen superior to any aircraft is silly.

Only the worlds biggest nations make fighterplanes: USA, Russia, China, Japan, Germany, France and the UK... and little Sweden. I think thats a great achivement. @mrjimbeam2009 I saw some graphs about how we had like 850 SAAB Lansen + Draken early/mid in the 70ies and around 600 Draken + Viggen early/mid in the 80ies. Now we only got 120 or so of the Gripens. And probably a much smaller capacity of actually getting them into the air if anything happens. End of soviet union has made some cuts ... Atleast Saab, Bofors, Hägglunds, ... is still around.

@JohanKH Yes but you should have in mind that 120 Gripens are equal to 360 other fighters, due to it´s multirole/swingrole capability. And since the 70´s and 80´s we now also have AEW&C (SAAB 340) and refueling tankers (C-130) within our airforce which greatly increases the operational capability. And one Gripen is ten times better than the US made F-16 Block. 50, according to results from Red Flag Alaska and Nellis =)

I do know one Gripen scored 5 F-16 kills in one CAC, and NEVER lost their battles between fighters nor SAM´s. Thats impressive...It actually sounds familiar that the Gripens score is around 100+ against the F-16...dont remember where the source came from :( But I do know the Gripen really has muscles against the US fighters :P

It was a Viggen that managed to get a lock-on on a SR-71 Blackbird, this was because the US always used a route between Gotland and Öland, two big island outside the eastern coast of Sweden. The Swedish Airforce patrolled the area.
The USAF sent a greetings card to the SAF because it's the first (and only) time a fighter has locked on a SR-71 =)

@Pylver yea but its not so hard when you know were they are coming :D, but they did it more then once....They managed to lock their radar on the SR-71 on numerous occasions. Despite heavy jamming from the SR-71, target illumination was maintained by feeding target location from ground-based radars to the fire-control computer in the Viggen. :D

That happened many times back in the early 1980, during the time I was "called up" (in Sweden). However, you have to remember that the SR-71 had to fly a predictable pattern based on the politics of the time (and I really wouldn't like for them to have broken that pattern- with a cold war at its height and "itchy trigger fingers"). So let's just acknowledge that both planes where state of the art and the engineering and the piloting was brilliant.

Recordo-me de ler um artigo acerca da aviónica do Rafale que o colocava na vanguarda, inclusive em relação aos sistemas americanos, normalmente melhores, mais robustos, com provas dadas mas mais caros.

Eu acho que o Grippen é melhor que o Rafale no naipe de armas que carrega, armas americanas muito bem desenvolvidas e testadas e com garantia de qualidade e funcionamento absoluto, provavelmente as francesas são igualmente boas mas essa prova de facto obtida no campo de batalha não é tão evidente.

The Gripen is a superb defensive plane.
Why ?
Because it is good enough in every field and has the decisive defensive advantage of being able to wait an agressor out from hidden dispersed bases so that in most engagements it will have initiative against an agressor's flank or rear. Away fly the missiles and then quick run for home in the woods.
Which plane is better for sustained tactical defense than the Gripen ? Add that Gripen's low operating costs can give your pilots more training.

No use to write anything on this site, several of my adds have been erased. I called USA for "world police", it seems to be "huge" crime .

I can't understand why that would be against the rules. I thank god that they are.

If USA had more responsibility for refugees from countries they invade, I wouldn't raise doubts about their intention. But USA don't do that.
