@RRapDiss The 6950 is faster than an overclocked 5850. 6870 is a better buy than 5850 since it has better tessellation performance, and it does get very close to 5870 so I'd say 6870 > 5850 :)
@FameswProductions No you have to overclock a 5850 to clocks higher than a 5870 to get 5870 performance, you have to compensate for the fact a 5850 has less SP's :)
@Newbpwng I don't know which brands will cover you if you damage by overclocking, usually it's only the very high end/expensive cards that come with cover for overclocking damage.
I keep reading that XFX has a good warranty though, might be worth googling for users experiences with XFX :)
Hellooo,, I recently overclocked my 5850 with the Ati overdrive feature. And i just maxed everything out there and i now have my GPU clock setting @ 775 mhz and memory clock setting @ 1100 mhz.. And is that a stable overclock? please reply! ;D
@jagageralla test with atitool, test for artifacts, you need an hour without artifacts and its stable, I tried at stock voltage 1.08 i think and found it to be underpowered. I played css on full and only got 40fps which on a 5850 should be unheard of.
@jagageralla 775/1100 should be fine, on ATI Overdrive there is a option to test custom clocks, if you let that run for a few mins it'll tell you if the overclock is stable or not :)
775/1100 shouldn't shorten the life of your card :)
I will buy cpu(Intel i7 930 @ to 3.4ghz)whit corsair H50 cpu cooler ,gpu( sapphire 5870 vapor) or new Nvidia FERMI cards.Motherboard will be Asus rampage III extreme and 6gb of corsair ram memory.
I will buy cpu(Intel i7 930 @ to 3.4ghz)whit corsair H50 cpu cooler ,gpu( sapphire 5870 vapor) or new Nvidia FERMI cards.Motherboard will be Asus rampage III extreme and 6gb of corsair ram memory.
I tried alot of different bios from different companies like ASUS, Saphire, and ATI, and they all worked fine but I liked the MSI bios better, I think nothing will happen if the cards are the same models. (I have an XFX 5850 XXX edition @ 1000MHz / 1200MHz)
Just finished overclocking my xfx 5850 to 875/1200mhz with an antec 750w psu. It's running Battlefield Bad Company 2 on max settings and I mean max settings with 60 fps + on an overclocked i7 920 @ 3.5.
I have the exact same card with an AMD Phenom X4 955 @4ghz and I play also with maxed setting 1920x1080, Everything HIGH, DX11, 4aa, 16af, and you get some pretty good fps but it is a far stretch for CONSTANT 60fps. Once your in the shit it can drop to 30 very quickly, but if you are just walking around, then yes.
my 5850 is factory oc, its like 765/1125, and I get frames between 30-60, 45 avg on max. How come u get more frames than me? I know that u oc'ed ur card more than mine but still there shouldn't be that much of an fps diff.
Yea I'm having the same results as the common0ne, everything maxed i get fps's between 30-60, i only get 60 when I'm like walking or looking at the ground or when I'm in a house. In a gun fight its like 40-50 fps. When there is a huge explosion some times my fps dips to 28 but this happens rarely.
Things like changing the stock cooler and adding a bit of ram all help, you're rig is pretty good. I'm using an i7 920 clocked to 3.5ghz, 6gb of corsair dominator ram (overclocked) 750w antec tp and the corsair h-50 watercooled CPU. If you have everything running really cool, it really does help with your frame rates. p.s. try overclocking your CPU and get a decent CPU cooler if you do, cuz intel's stock cooler is shite.
I highly doubt that my cpu is the reason for not getting the same results of fps that ur getting. I read this article where they compared an i7 920 gaming results with a Q6600 gaming results, the i7 920 only had 2 fps increase in crysis, they were both using the same graphics card, i forgot with the graphics card was though. Same thing with ram, bfbc2 only uses 2 gb, so other amount of ram wont matter. But the point is i think it has to be something with the gpu not the cpu.
i dont understand some people say you have to flash the card with the msi or asus bios to change the voltage, but you did not say anything about that?
Flashing the BIOS is optional, it's always risky replacing the BIOS and could leave your card bricked so i don't recommend it :)
All 5850's can be overclocked by AMD GPU Clock Tool, no BIOS or special support required for that. MSI After Burner isn't fully supported by none-MSI cards, but some will work with the voltage adjustment (this Powercolor card does)
The best option is to buy a card that has voltage tweak options out of the box, like some ASUS and XFX models.
@jimakosoctavia21 I recently reinstalled Windows and have been having the same issue, haven't found a fix yet but i assume it's down to a newer version of GPU Clock Tool, Afterburner or ATI drivers installed :)
I've figured out our problem. Only 1.20 version of MSI Afterburner works properly, the newer and older versions don't set the voltage correctly and cause a crash ;)
is there a way to get AMD GPU clock tool to boot up with the clocks you have manually imputed so that you don't have to punch in the numbers on every boot up?
i was thinking it might be my motherboard(could be putting a voltage limit on it) or psu(only 450W when 500W is "required") or something else im probs getting a brand new pc(excluding the 5850)so time will tell.also i get cpu bottleneck 2 which sucks at least halfs my fps
Aim lower, too much voltage can create instabilities too.
Best way to find the most stable clock is to build up from a low clock. It's a slow process, but the best way to find your GPU's best OC. Increase the clock by 10MHz, run a stability test, repeat until you find instability :)

@luchonex Depends on what other hardware you have in your system. If you've got your CPU overclocked as well you're probably close to 550w :)

@larsenmark277 I don't think the motherboard will affect graphics card overclocks, since it doesn't influence the power, clocks etc. :)
