  • my pc is the hpp6621c can i overclock the graphics card wth ut ruining warrnty

  • is hd 5850 overclocked is better than hd 6870 or hd 6950?

  • @RRapDiss The 6950 is faster than an overclocked 5850. 6870 is a better buy than 5850 since it has better tessellation performance, and it does get very close to 5870 so I'd say 6870 > 5850 :)

  • @cplcevop

I never heard of an ati hd 58(6)0 ;)

  • Haha I like that wallpaper =]

  • use ati tray tool you can change voltage and mhz together

  • nice setup! Thanks for the vid!

  • So you can get 5850 OC'ed to 5870 performance at 5870's default settings?

  • @FameswProductions No you have to overclock a 5850 to clocks higher than a 5870 to get 5870 performance, you have to compensate for the fact a 5850 has less SP's :)

  • @Aaronage1 Yeah almost forgot about that

  • do you know if i Overclock to 5870 performance and the card fails is there any of the companies that will still cover it with warranty like XFX?

  • @Newbpwng I don't know which brands will cover you if you damage by overclocking, usually it's only the very high end/expensive cards that come with cover for overclocking damage.

I keep reading that XFX has a good warranty though, might be worth googling for users experiences with XFX :)

  • @Newbpwng yes xfx will cover it

  • is overclocking to 5870s speeds going eazy or pushing it ????

  • @Newbpwng That's not too big an overclock, should be fine with a little extra voltage :)

  • @Aaronage1 thanx

  • Hellooo,, I recently overclocked my 5850 with the Ati overdrive feature. And i just maxed everything out there and i now have my GPU clock setting @ 775 mhz and memory clock setting @ 1100 mhz.. And is that a stable overclock? please reply! ;D

  • @jagageralla test with atitool, test for artifacts, you need an hour without artifacts and its stable, I tried at stock voltage 1.08 i think and found it to be underpowered. I played css on full and only got 40fps which on a 5850 should be unheard of.

  • Will this shorten my 5850 life, if i do this? i mean is it safe? ;p sry for noobish question im just curious! cheers.

  • @jagageralla 775/1100 should be fine, on ATI Overdrive there is a option to test custom clocks, if you let that run for a few mins it'll tell you if the overclock is stable or not :)

775/1100 shouldn't shorten the life of your card :)

  • do you use water cooling cause i wanted to overclock mine with only air

  • @erack1 This is on air, fan speed only running at around 35% in this video i think :)

You only need water for 1100MHz+ overclocks as far as i know :)

  • @Aaronage1 omgd nice!!! thanks cant wait to overlock mine to 1000mhz :D

  • Hey how far you think I can oc my video card on a phenom 3.4 ghz CPU? I'm really looking into icing my 5850 but would that mean same settings as you?

    -thanks, EP

  • @EnforcedProductions

The card will overclock fine with any CPU as long as you have a decent power supply :)

I run my Phenom II at 3.9GHz with the 5850 at 1GHz no problem :)

  • you play sa-mp? :O what's your username? where do you usually play?

  • @paycer Usually go under the name Aaronage, don't go on too often nowadays but usually mess about on stunt themed servers :D

  • I will buy cpu(Intel i7 930 @ to 3.4ghz)whit corsair H50 cpu cooler ,gpu( sapphire 5870 vapor) or new Nvidia FERMI cards.Motherboard will be Asus rampage III extreme and 6gb of corsair ram memory.

    Monitor:Samsung P2250 or P2350.

  • thanks alot mayne! Great ViD!

The msi after burner ended up actually working in increasing my mhz...llol but not my vaultage....haha but this actuallt worked for me!

    Ati Radeon 4330

    Msi A6005 2intel dou core

  • How do you save your overclock on amd gpu clock tool? everytime i restart my comp, it goes back to the defualt clocks. Can anyone help me?

  • How come you don't flash the card with the MSI Bios so you can unlock the settings?

  • @eddie972e Don't want to risk bricking the card :)

  • I tried alot of different bios from different companies like ASUS, Saphire, and ATI, and they all worked fine but I liked the MSI bios better, I think nothing will happen if the cards are the same models. (I have an XFX 5850 XXX edition @ 1000MHz / 1200MHz)

  • Just finished overclocking my xfx 5850 to 875/1200mhz with an antec 750w psu. It's running Battlefield Bad Company 2 on max settings and I mean max settings with 60 fps + on an overclocked i7 920 @ 3.5.

  • I have the exact same card with an AMD Phenom X4 955 @4ghz and I play also with maxed setting 1920x1080, Everything HIGH, DX11, 4aa, 16af, and you get some pretty good fps but it is a far stretch for CONSTANT 60fps. Once your in the shit it can drop to 30 very quickly, but if you are just walking around, then yes.

  • I have MSI afterburner on all the time for fan control. When i'm playing games, it's on at 50+. When idle, back to 20.

  • my 5850 is factory oc, its like 765/1125, and I get frames between 30-60, 45 avg on max. How come u get more frames than me? I know that u oc'ed ur card more than mine but still there shouldn't be that much of an fps diff.

  • What CPU, RAM, CPU COOLER, PSU etc... do you have?

  • CPU: i7 860 @ 2.8 Ghz (factory Clock)

    RAM: 4 GB DDR3 1333 Mhz

    CPU Cooler: i7 Stock fan

    PSU: 700w Extreme Gear

Yea I'm having the same results as the common0ne, everything maxed i get fps's between 30-60, i only get 60 when I'm like walking or looking at the ground or when I'm in a house. In a gun fight its like 40-50 fps. When there is a huge explosion some times my fps dips to 28 but this happens rarely.

  • Things like changing the stock cooler and adding a bit of ram all help, you're rig is pretty good. I'm using an i7 920 clocked to 3.5ghz, 6gb of corsair dominator ram (overclocked) 750w antec tp and the corsair h-50 watercooled CPU. If you have everything running really cool, it really does help with your frame rates. p.s. try overclocking your CPU and get a decent CPU cooler if you do, cuz intel's stock cooler is shite.

  • I highly doubt that my cpu is the reason for not getting the same results of fps that ur getting. I read this article where they compared an i7 920 gaming results with a Q6600 gaming results, the i7 920 only had 2 fps increase in crysis, they were both using the same graphics card, i forgot with the graphics card was though. Same thing with ram, bfbc2 only uses 2 gb, so other amount of ram wont matter. But the point is i think it has to be something with the gpu not the cpu.

  • i have a 550w power supply, do i need to upgrade in order to do this overclock?

  • @luchonex Depends on what other hardware you have in your system. If you've got your CPU overclocked as well you're probably close to 550w :)

I'm pretty sure i'm pushing my 600w hard with the Phenom II and 5850 overclocked

  • what do you mean with close?

    i have a core 2 duo 2.66ghz and 2 hdd sata 7200rpm

  • @luchonex I mean, if you had your CPU overclocked, you'd probably be near your PSU's max of 550w

If you're running your Core 2 at stock speeds, you'll be fine :)

  • Thank man i'm going try this thing again after changing my msi afterburner version which is 1.51

  • Hey everyone!

Please read the vid info, it's important if you want to use this video as a guide ;)

    Thanks, Aaron

  • can you oc this card on a cheap motherboard with a Chieftec A-135 Series 650W??

  • @larsenmark277 Can't see why not :D As long as you're not pushing the max draw of the power supply, you should be ok :)

  • Okay so you only need a good motherboard to Oc the cpu?

  • @larsenmark277 I don't think the motherboard will affect graphics card overclocks, since it doesn't influence the power, clocks etc. :)

I'd still say go with a mid range board and power supply though, I've gone the cheap route in the past and really regretted it :)

  • Thx :D

  • i dont understand some people say you have to flash the card with the msi or asus bios to change the voltage, but you did not say anything about that?

  • @orrekorre

Flashing the BIOS is optional, it's always risky replacing the BIOS and could leave your card bricked so i don't recommend it :)

All 5850's can be overclocked by AMD GPU Clock Tool, no BIOS or special support required for that. MSI After Burner isn't fully supported by none-MSI cards, but some will work with the voltage adjustment (this Powercolor card does)

The best option is to buy a card that has voltage tweak options out of the box, like some ASUS and XFX models.

  • So what card did you use? I heard not all of the cards OC well

  • @Geoxile

    It's a Powercolor 5850 using the reference design/cooler :)

  • can u play gta 4 online???

  • I hope you know that there is an overclocking tool that's in the catalyst control center, under ati overdrive

  • @killstation3baseball Yep, it's very basic though, will only allow you to go to 775MHz and no voltage tweak options :)

  • i have 650w psu and i clock the card to 1000 and 1100 and she crash...why is that hapen...sry for bad english

  • @jimakosoctavia21 I recently reinstalled Windows and have been having the same issue, haven't found a fix yet but i assume it's down to a newer version of GPU Clock Tool, Afterburner or ATI drivers installed :)

  • @jimakosoctavia21

I've figured out our problem. Only 1.20 version of MSI Afterburner works properly, the newer and older versions don't set the voltage correctly and cause a crash ;)

  • how many core clock has its hd5850?

  • @junincastor The 5850 has 1440 SPU's clocked at 725MHz stock, 1000MHz GDDR5 memory.

  • Good video. I have almost similar specs on the new pc.

Except its a Phenom II 955BE, HD5850 and only 2gb of ram cause money was not enough

  • @dikidera Nice!

  • how in the hell do you download AMD GPU cloc ktool? it isnt downloading. i get an error message when i try to open it.

  • @coldharbur00 Google "AMD GPU Clock Tool" and click the first link for TechPowerUp, that download works fine :)

  • is there a way to get AMD GPU clock tool to boot up with the clocks you have manually imputed so that you don't have to punch in the numbers on every boot up?

  • @xxmastermixx I'm not sure about that, always tend to leave it stock unless I'm running games or benchies :)

  • Thx alot.

  • what desktop background is that it's awesome

  • @gothen1234 It's a stock Windows 7 wallpaper, if you google for "Windows 7 RTM Wallpaper Pack" you should be able to find it :D

  • i cn only get up 2 a stable 850 :(

  • @Flimsii Ah bad luck, it's always a hit and miss thing with overclocking :)

  • i was thinking it might be my motherboard(could be putting a voltage limit on it) or psu(only 450W when 500W is "required") or something else im probs getting a brand new pc(excluding the 5850)so time will tell.also i get cpu bottleneck 2 which sucks at least halfs my fps

  • Great video! Thanks for help on psu for pc!

  • it not stable

can you give me a new setting

  • Aim lower, too much voltage can create instabilities too.

Best way to find the most stable clock is to build up from a low clock. It's a slow process, but the best way to find your GPU's best OC. Increase the clock by 10MHz, run a stability test, repeat until you find instability :)

  • thanks my friend thanks to you i overclocked my 2 sapphires over a 5870s =-)

  • Is ATI Tool any good?

  • I've tried to use it in the past with a 4850 and 4770 but it's never worked for me, i think the developers may have stopped supporting it for newer cards :)

  • Flash your cards bios with an Asus or MSI bios and you wont have to fuck about with clock tool ;)

  • i got 2 saphires 5850's but i really wanted the asus for there o'c tool. anyways can u flash a saphire gpu with a asus or msi bios?and how

  • It's possible yeah, but there's always the risk of it going wrong - gonna play it safe and keep my warranty ;)

  • I really envy your card :(

My 4890 is still treating me well though. Hopefully I'll get my 5850 during Christmas. I really missed out on a sell for an XFX 5850 @ $266.99.

Great stuff like always Aaron and I gotta say, the Flip Mino HD is doing the job quite well.

  • Thanks!

The 4890 is a great card, i almost got one on sale at £100 but resisted temptation xD

The Flip Mino is doing pretty well yeah, not the best camera for this but records enough detail to capture the screen :D

  • Yeah the quality is quite nice, much better than I expected.
