no one has mentioned how cool of a reporter / interviewer this young lad is, usually they are annoying as fuck, got a great calm approach and a great voice... well done kid
Why does everyone slag him off for doing artwork? Sure he's not setting the world on fire with it but if he's happy, isn't that the more important thing?
Thank FUCK he's picking a guitar up again, that's all I can say. "An exploration of the rear of the canvass"? Such a waste of the *real* talent nature bestowed upon him. Not saying his art is poor, I'm only a layman and probably not fit to judge... Dali and Magritte are more my cup of tea, but it is clear Squire's true vocation is being stifled.
People need to get off the "reform the Stone Roses" vibe
They split coz it ran dry creatively, all that would be gained by reforming apart from some £ would be playing a 20 year old set of the 1st LP, probably too slowly, they wouldn't be the same as they were in the 80s
U can't reverse time, shame but there it is
Looking forward to the next band that's as good as they were ; )
Honestly, i like his art, i like his music, one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. Now he's doing what he's content doing and i applaud him for it...id just like to shake his hand
@finalelement42 Great comment, ive always been in the squire camp, and id much sooner just bump into him one day and say hey john, thanks, and shake his hand and leave it at that.
It's amazing that despite giving up making music, Squire is still regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time...which of course he is. I totally respect John no matter what he does because either way the impact he's made is massive.
john squire great guitarist and good artist. Pity him and Ian Brown don't get on. Waste of talent, they could of wrote so many more cool songs together.
@LooseFit88 that would be the best day of my life, but I dont think this will ever happen,I wish it happens in 2013 tho cause glasto 2012 is canceled.oh fuck that, reform the roses now!!
Be nice to be able to afford to just retire and create art in the middle of nowhere away from all the husle and busle and pointy nosed busy bodies.Fair fucks to him.....
even tho i think the roses are the best band of all time, im not desperate for them to reform. theyve already done the best album ever & greatest song ever (she bangs the drums). it'd be like pelke going into football managemnet. nothing left to prove. quality not quantity
john is a genius, stone roses are my favourite ever band but i dont like to see john insulted by questions about the roses, you can see he hates answering them, stone roses were amazing but they have been and gone, i wasn't born when they came to fame, so it would be amazing to see them but the onl yway it'l happen is if ian and john are skint and cant feed their families
It's a shame for us fans that he has given up music, but he seems really happy.
I can't really blame him for hanging up his guitar, though.
He has been accused of all possible disloyalties, everyone had something to say about everything he did, b/c he made THAT perfect album and everything he did thereafter had to measure up to that. I can see why he wants to leave the Roses in his past.
All considered I'm surprised he's not even more pissed off!
Before any reunion can take place, there has to be a reconsiliation tween Ian Brown, John Squire, and Reni. To the best of my knowledge none of the three have been in the same room for several years. The three of them seemed to get along with Mani but they couldn't get along with each other which makes Mani the Ringo Starr of the Stone Roses. The Stone Roses made history But what a shame they still don't talk to each other.
i wish john would stop fuckin around doin art and do what hes best as the lead guitarist of the stone roses ian as well his solo career isnt half is good as what he done with the stone roses ! .. REFORM THE ROSES !
I said this on another video the other day. Someone need to get on the case and do a website or summin so the fans can organise some proper public support for a Roses reunion tour.
They've all said they wanna do it at one time or another, just never at the same time and I think Mani gave up trying to persuade the others.
There is a headline slot waiting for them at Glasto 2010.
Sounds like they're still huge issues between everyone; john, ian, and reni. I still blame garreth evans. They lost up to five years stuck in court, they didn't lost their nerve. What could have been.
John Squire is amazing. That concept of Englishness appears to be integral to his art. A concept as broad as it is deep, will it continue to define Squires art? Look at Squires Empire. He said it reminded him of a faded flag. A flag can represent a nations glory, its emblem, badge of honor. On the surface, these things represent power; yet, Squire unravels it all, regurgitates it as a crumbled mask, frayed edge and withered shell, just as I would expect from a master dissembler.
A line's been crossed when Jay-Z has a No.1 single in our country.. which once had The Beatles, Oasis, The Stone Roses, Sex Pistols, The Smiths, Neil Young and The Rolling Stones filling the charts.. now we are forcred to listen to n-dubz, jay-z and shit like that!!!!
Times have changed, people have changed, the music business and the way we listen to music has changed. I agree with you somewhat, in that I would say the music business and the charts is more like a machine, whereas in the past it all came more organically. However, Jay Z is still a very talented man.
@DANNYM35 I cried when it said in the paper they turned down £1,000,000 each to re-form. Music has died now if im honest with exception of a few bands.
@AcidHouseMatt Yeah, I remember that too and was pretty gutted about it. If they can afford to turn down money like that to reform, good luck to 'em. But I wish they'd just do a one-off gig or something for all the fans, and to blow all today's crap so-called indie bands and people like n-dubz and jay-z clean away.
Anyone who's interview technique contains the phrase "I remember reading in an interview somewhere...." needs cunting in the murray. I so wanted John Squire to do such a thing half way through the question.
John Squire is an amazing artist whatever he does...and of course one of the finest guitarists around, his solo albums are great, ok maybe he shouldn't sing on all the songs, but there's something about this bloke that is simply MAGNETIC, digging his choices
Thinks "Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, Stone Roses, !!!!!!!!"
Wow, really wish they'd stop asking these guys if they'll ever reunite. They made a great album. Anything they do now could only be a disappointment. Some things are best left undone. Let them live their lives.
if ian brown doesnt want to reform the roses then why does he play the first album all the time live?he says he wants to leave it to rest but he plays those songs with a roses tribute band!!i like some of his new tunes but when live its like everyones just waiting for the roses stuff.
Are you sure? I'd be willing to sell my fucking house to get tickets to go and see them coz you know they'd sell out wembley stadium in about 30 minutes.
Blobs on canvas have been fully explored in the middle of the previous century, so there is nothing new here to further art along. Surprised that the fashionable but -- I guess -- desperate gallery is showing old-style art.
i cant understand at all the delicateness of interviewers about the whole issue.ian has learnt his lesson and can now sing if he wants to.hes the frontman squire always wanted him to be.
regardless of the music and all remember the stone roses were great mates for years living in each others pockets.what memories they must have had.i dunno not speaking to someone about something that happened when they were "kids" is ridiculous now that they re grown men is plain silly.sit down over a few beers and a few E and it will be sortid.
Thats not art arts someone creating something, thats just a mess! Da vinci was a artist Michelangelo, Salvador Dali, This bullshit everythings just as relevant, just detracks from people who are really gifted it must be so fustrating for people who are really talented artists!
Anyway... you have no idea if i am talented or not. Whereas you are clearly ignorant, and have an inflated view of how important your opinion is. You have no right to say if something is or isn't art - that's the point of art. It's about an individual's right to express themselves - it's not a science.
No Monseiur Quaro, it is you who cannot appreciate, anyway by your definition my opinion is art! Also by your reasoning you have no right to argue against my opinion. You can neither provide a valid argument against my thoughts on the subjects work, nor provide your own opinion as to why you like it, methinks you wouldn't be so enraptured by it did you not know of it's creators previous incarnation!
What makes you think I know nothing about art history?? What makes you think I am unable to provide any valid arguments?? I'm just not all that interested in arguing with you to be honest!
This isn't religon you know it's not "judge lest thy be judged", if someone puts work on display, they are asking for the veiwers opinion, be it praise or criticism! My opinions valid as it has reasoning, so it stands! I do not dislike art just bad art! How can all art be good? It can't! Surley some art is better than other art! Real Talent is not being given the praise it deserves! Because in the modern art world "everything is relivent!"
I think you toning your opinion down somewhat, your logic is fuzzy at best not to mention how you have contradicted yourself! Shame on you you compromised! There is modern art which is valid! But too what degree? If you picked dog shit up off the street and exhibited it would it be art! No it would be a cheap stunt! I could look at the work of Salvador Dali all day long, a man who masturbated in the corner of his work instead of signing it, I have no problem grasping the concepts 1
??? Where have I contradicted myself? All I said was that you had no right to say this wasn't art - look back at the post!
Yes I agree - Salvador Dali was a genius. Yes I agree - dog shit art such as Martin Creed's work is also 'in my opinion' more than a bit ridiculous, and serves only to alienate most people from modern art.
I accept however that I have no right to say that it isn't art. Even if I do think it's dog shit!
of which you write but anything taken to the utter extreme is stupidity, there must always be craftsmanship involved in art, otherwise it has no real worth, mentally or aesthetically, all the best now be sure and tell your no doubt idiotic, ignorant cock of a art teacher what I have written, rather than spouting the everything is as relevant as everything else, mantra you "artists" are so fond of! 2
That is your opinion. I'd like to see you try and tell Jackson Pollock that he had no craftmanship! We will be here forever if I attempt to educate you on non-subjective art, as you are clearly not interested enough to listen for a start.
Music is your thing - that's cool. Don't claim to have a definitive view on art.
And again, no I'm not saying everything is as relevant... just that your opinion in irrelevant, and I thought I'd let you know. I'm not even telling you you're wrong!
In fact. I will even add that I am not overly fond of this exhibition of Squire's work. His latest stuff is a lot better - check out 'New Work' on his website.
My argument wasn't about your opinion of the work. It was solely with you announcing thart it wasn't art just because you didn't like it.
Thanks for disagreeing with me though. I like to be challenged by someone who can say more than LOL, LMAO, blah, blah, blah...
Squire rules and always will. For those talking shit all I can say is; have fun at work tomorrow and the next day and the next day..... You sad cunts will never be anything but commentary.
One of the most gifted and creative guitarists ever. He really is a talented artist and doesn't have to prove anything. A reunion wouldn't make sense, those days are over. I prefer this Squire to the fifteen year younger one.
i remember about 15 years ago when they fought with Ian and both of those guys were at that time big assholes, but im positively surprising that in nowadays john is very gentleman and nice guy! and so Ian too
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
John Squire has turned into possibly the most boring dull man on the planet, this is what happens when a rock star is with out music, when will it stop?
The way I look at it Squires been there done it. Cut the man some slack, just wants to spend quality time with his art and family probably... Im sure if many of you pessimists had the career he has had, you would feel the same... losers!
All you twats slagging off the second coming have probably got the stone roses first album next to your simply red albums in your cd collection.Your all idiots that second album was genius.
Squire *....this piece reminds me of... a faded flag....* Im a huge fan and love every thing to do with him roses/seahorses/solo.. but i think hes like an inverted genious doesnt socialise much that type.. like he only speaks when spoken too :) *GENIOUS*
I whish that the Stone Roses would get back together. And that John Squire and Ian Brown would put there differences aside, get Reni and Mani back play a couple of gigs just to get people spurred up,release an album then do a tour, and stay as a band.Simple.
He should have stayed with Meth. To take a quote from the book, The Stone Roses and the resurrection of British Pop, "The roses did Speed Religiously". This was, of course, before the shitty 2nd coming album.
It still saddens me that he has chose the brush over the guitar tho as i think he is a better musician than artist..I would love the band to get back together more than anything! the thought of them not ever playing again is deeply saddening! if they ever did i would like it if john used strat and jag etc for the old stuff and les paul for second coming era...ahhh dream on eh... excuse my rant.
From "Sally Cinnamon" to "One Love" lies the genius of Squire. It was so creative, vibrant, unique, and revolutionary. Then suddenly he decided to turn into a generic boring rock blues guitarist. Why? It just baffles me to this day.
id love them 2 get back im only 22 and never had the chance to see them ive seen browny and even tho he gets stick 4 his voice hes a class act wen ive seen him. but to see the roses would be amazing id pay a lot of money 2 c that
its pretty sad really, two old school friends who dont talk anymore. im not sure about a reunion i dont no wether the magic would stil be there but it would be amazing to see them again.
who wants a reunion?! itd be shit! 1st of all not all the real fans would get tickets, all the touts would get them then flog them at robbery prices, 2nd back then they ment something it was about the music, now itd be 4 middle aged blokes on a stage. johns artwork is f*ckin amazing, hes probably the best artist in tho country atm and i went to johns exhibition and for what prices these artworks are going for i dont think hes short of cash. the largest was £28,000 and the small ones were £2000.
id agree with that. id love to see them play but i cant think of one reunion in recent years that has been any good or done the band any justice. i love john squire but you only have to listen to his last album to see his heart isnt really in it anymore. shame but theyre just people at the end of the day. if they did reform i think to do it properly it would have to be a proper album and a tour rather than a couple of cheesy greatest hits gigs and i just cant see them being bothered with it.
Totally agree. At least they can keep their dignity and respect. Getting back together and doing greatest hits etc. would totally deconstruct the whole legend that has grown up over the years - an awful price to pay to see, as you say, four middle aged guys on stage doing songs we love but with no love.
Squire was never the most animated (no pun intended) interviewee.
The maltesers is a childhood thing, as you probably know. However, a mate of a mate of Paul Ryder's (which goes for shit, obviously) tells me its still going on, so maybe it is, maybe it isn't.
In my eyes, hes the greatest guitar player ever, his style, his technique just blow me away ( and everything hes done looks so easy when you watch him play- bastard!). But i gotta say...SQUIRE! PUT THE FUCKING PAINTBRUSH DOWN MAN AND PLUG BACK IN!!!! It realy is what the world is waiting for, my world anyway. Living legend
Not really into his artwork, but hey, the Roses were the best band ever. It's a shame they haven't spoken in 11 years. Brown shouldn't have said what he said, and Squire shouldn't be so stubborn ;) Wouldn't want the Roses to reform anyway, it'd never be the same.
11 years!?! what is wrong that pair. I don't necessarily want to see The Roses get back together, cos it could tarnish the legacy, but Ian and John to not talk for so long. That's awful, they went to school together, they have kids now and they can't bring themselves to say a couple of words to each other. For shame!
He'll always be an idol for me but fuck me the guys dull and I wouldnt hang that shit up in my bathroom. He should have kept to being an enigmatic mute .
Why wont john or ian just fucking phone one another and have done with it, imagine all the money they would get and all the fans they would have, the roses were such a brilliant band. John needs to flush his brush and whip out his old strat :-)
brilliant. always good to see john, he's as good with a brush as he is with a guitar. very cool. come back johnny! :) some of the stuff he did with si jones (from the verve) is on his myspace page and its quality.
good to see the man smiling, why does every reporter feel they hav to ask about the roses, its been and gone, jon is successful as an artist and ian is flying high, leave it to rest

Blobs on canvas have been fully explored in the middle of the previous century, so there is nothing new here to further art along. Surprised that the fashionable but -- I guess -- desperate gallery is showing old-style art.

regardless of the music and all remember the stone roses were great mates for years living in each others pockets.what memories they must have had.i dunno not speaking to someone about something that happened when they were "kids" is ridiculous now that they re grown men is plain silly.sit down over a few beers and a few E and it will be sortid.

just one more thing... he looks a lost soul.. pick your guitar back up John you're a genius with it.. this art seems pretentious to me...
mattcally1 3 years ago
pretentious... wrong word man! he's a phenomenal artist too! thats what he was doing before the Roses!
Bk25 3 years ago
Thats not art arts someone creating something, thats just a mess! Da vinci was a artist Michelangelo, Salvador Dali, This bullshit everythings just as relevant, just detracks from people who are really gifted it must be so fustrating for people who are really talented artists!
strawberryfields1982 3 years ago
You are an ignorant cock.
stephvsilk 3 years ago
Yeah well your a talentless twat!
strawberryfields1982 3 years ago
Au contraire - my twat is extremely talented!
Anyway... you have no idea if i am talented or not. Whereas you are clearly ignorant, and have an inflated view of how important your opinion is. You have no right to say if something is or isn't art - that's the point of art. It's about an individual's right to express themselves - it's not a science.
stephvsilk 3 years ago
No Monseiur Quaro, it is you who cannot appreciate, anyway by your definition my opinion is art! Also by your reasoning you have no right to argue against my opinion. You can neither provide a valid argument against my thoughts on the subjects work, nor provide your own opinion as to why you like it, methinks you wouldn't be so enraptured by it did you not know of it's creators previous incarnation!
strawberryfields1982 3 years ago
What makes you think I know nothing about art history?? What makes you think I am unable to provide any valid arguments?? I'm just not all that interested in arguing with you to be honest!
stephvsilk 3 years ago
This isn't religon you know it's not "judge lest thy be judged", if someone puts work on display, they are asking for the veiwers opinion, be it praise or criticism! My opinions valid as it has reasoning, so it stands! I do not dislike art just bad art! How can all art be good? It can't! Surley some art is better than other art! Real Talent is not being given the praise it deserves! Because in the modern art world "everything is relivent!"
strawberryfields1982 3 years ago
I didn't say you weren't entitled to an opinion. You are perfectly entitled to think this is shit.
Neither did I say all art was good.
Neither am I interested in telling why I do/don't like this, as I don't have to justify my opinion just as you don't yours.
Neither am I championing the state of the modern art world.
You are picking fights that aren't there.
I was simply challenging the fact that you feel you have the right to say that something is or isn't art.
stephvsilk 3 years ago
I think you toning your opinion down somewhat, your logic is fuzzy at best not to mention how you have contradicted yourself! Shame on you you compromised! There is modern art which is valid! But too what degree? If you picked dog shit up off the street and exhibited it would it be art! No it would be a cheap stunt! I could look at the work of Salvador Dali all day long, a man who masturbated in the corner of his work instead of signing it, I have no problem grasping the concepts 1
strawberryfields1982 3 years ago
Even if I do think it's dog shit!
stephvsilk 3 years ago
Well if you have no right having an opinion on "what is art what isn't" why are you expressing one?
strawberryfields1982 3 years ago
I haven't. It is art. It is expression. Just in my opinion it's shit!
stephvsilk 3 years ago
of which you write but anything taken to the utter extreme is stupidity, there must always be craftsmanship involved in art, otherwise it has no real worth, mentally or aesthetically, all the best now be sure and tell your no doubt idiotic, ignorant cock of a art teacher what I have written, rather than spouting the everything is as relevant as everything else, mantra you "artists" are so fond of! 2
strawberryfields1982 3 years ago
That is your opinion. I'd like to see you try and tell Jackson Pollock that he had no craftmanship! We will be here forever if I attempt to educate you on non-subjective art, as you are clearly not interested enough to listen for a start.
Music is your thing - that's cool. Don't claim to have a definitive view on art.
And again, no I'm not saying everything is as relevant... just that your opinion in irrelevant, and I thought I'd let you know. I'm not even telling you you're wrong!
stephvsilk 3 years ago
I like to be challenged by someone who can say more than LOL, LMAO, blah, blah, blah...
stephvsilk 3 years ago
Calm down treacle... If they reform then great if not I'm happy in the fact I've seen them.. chill

strawberryfields1982 3 years ago
One of the most gifted and creative guitarists ever. He really is a talented artist and doesn't have to prove anything. A reunion wouldn't make sense, those days are over. I prefer this Squire to the fifteen year younger one.

John Squire has turned into possibly the most boring dull man on the planet, this is what happens when a rock star is with out music, when will it stop?

The way I look at it Squires been there done it. Cut the man some slack, just wants to spend quality time with his art and family probably... Im sure if many of you pessimists had the career he has had, you would feel the same... losers!

He is miles more communicative talking about his art than he ever was talking about music, although that's
easy to do judging by his music interviews that I have seen. There won't be a reunion.

Squire *....this piece reminds me of... a faded flag....* Im a huge fan and love every thing to do with him roses/seahorses/solo.. but i think hes like an inverted genious doesnt socialise much that type.. like he only speaks when spoken too :) *GENIOUS*

what an evasive interview, this is supposed to be about the John the artist not about the Roses.

I whish that the Stone Roses would get back together. And that John Squire and Ian Brown would put there differences aside, get Reni and Mani back play a couple of gigs just to get people spurred up,release an album then do a tour, and stay as a band.Simple.
saintmirrentilIdie 3 years ago
It´s harder than it sounds, brown & squire havn´t spoken in 12 years, they don´t know eachother anymoore, but i share your view
beerNmusic 3 years ago 2
Cocaine. Is the answer that simple.
He should have stayed with Meth. To take a quote from the book, The Stone Roses and the resurrection of British Pop, "The roses did Speed Religiously". This was, of course, before the shitty 2nd coming album.
temjin44 3 years ago
Wish they'd talk more about his art. Poor John! Must be hard to remember back 12 or 13 years
paulmichaelwills 3 years ago
hey temjin44,i'll answer your question in one word. . . . .cocaine!
fritzenberg 4 years ago
It still saddens me that he has chose the brush over the guitar tho as i think he is a better musician than artist..I would love the band to get back together more than anything! the thought of them not ever playing again is deeply saddening! if they ever did i would like it if john used strat and jag etc for the old stuff and les paul for second coming era...ahhh dream on eh... excuse my rant.
comfortblanket 4 years ago
From "Sally Cinnamon" to "One Love" lies the genius of Squire. It was so creative, vibrant, unique, and revolutionary. Then suddenly he decided to turn into a generic boring rock blues guitarist. Why? It just baffles me to this day.

id love them 2 get back im only 22 and never had the chance to see them ive seen browny and even tho he gets stick 4 his voice hes a class act wen ive seen him. but to see the roses would be amazing id pay a lot of money 2 c that

its pretty sad really, two old school friends who dont talk anymore. im not sure about a reunion i dont no wether the magic would stil be there but it would be amazing to see them again.
crispywesty 4 years ago
who wants a reunion?! itd be shit!
Krizgallagher69 4 years ago 2
id agree with that. id love to see them play but i cant think of one reunion in recent years that has been any good or done the band any justice. i love john squire but you only have to listen to his last album to see his heart isnt really in it anymore. shame but theyre just people at the end of the day. if they did reform i think to do it properly it would have to be a proper album and a tour rather than a couple of cheesy greatest hits gigs and i just cant see them being bothered with it.
quatermas7 4 years ago
What about Take That?
aubenhairything 3 years ago
Totally agree. At least they can keep their dignity and respect. Getting back together and doing greatest hits etc. would totally deconstruct the whole legend that has grown up over the years - an awful price to pay to see, as you say, four middle aged guys on stage doing songs we love but with no love.
Squire was never the most animated (no pun intended) interviewee.

John sent browny ONE box of malteasers when he was in jail.
saying "I still love you, hope everything is cool"
He left no number, adress or form of contact.
hardly an annual event.
Squire's too busy playing with paint and chemicals and spiralling into a pit of self pity
pembo18 4 years ago 4
The maltesers is a childhood thing, as you probably know. However, a mate of a mate of Paul Ryder's (which goes for shit, obviously) tells me its still going on, so maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

In my eyes, hes the greatest guitar player ever, his style, his technique just blow me away ( and everything hes done looks so easy when you watch him play- bastard!). But i gotta say...SQUIRE!

For shame!
