I know we tend to call all musical works "songs," even though they aren't . . . but if you want to hear the song that is a counterpart to this Adagietto, composed in the same period of his life and expressing a lot of the same feeling, listen to "Ich bin der Welt Abhanden gekommen" (I have become estranged from the world), sung by Janet Baker. Recording is on YouTube.
I am captivated by this song. I sit in awe of it. I am breathless, always reflecting on my life. So somber, yet we are elevated at the end, as if Mahler guides us through a transfiguration where our soul is liberated and at once realizes that it is at long last free of its physical chains. "I am coming home," it remarks.....sigh!!
This must be what heaven sounds like.

why would you even mention Justin Bieber?
Gosh, may I forget his existence for a second here?
This is man translating his mortal existence into on of immortality--that is why this piece transcends us.

Way too slow ... Mahler needed about 8.00 ...
73Adorno 9 months ago
@73Adorno Yes, it is too slow. But it is still beautiful. Clearly the tempo could be a good bit faster, but really, who are we to complain.

Marvelous marvelous. And, forgive me, one cannot help remembering Viscontis excellent DEATH IN VENICE.......

I've heard this somewhere, yet I can't remember where...a ballet, maybe? Or even in my dreams...?
Oh well, it's amazingly, hauntingly beautiful nonetheless, very much like a perfect and solemn, promising dream.
