I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs + injection and tank clean and rustfree
@80sfordman Great choice! The P5 is leagues ahead of the P6 in style, class and build quality but the P6 (preferably in 'S' spec) is the more sporting, modern drive. Bit faster to boot as well...

The ONLY bad thing about this car was the engine in it. This car was the classiest British grand tourer ever. Triumph had the recipe damn near perfect, except for the engine. This car was essentially a British Mercedes 280 SL. My family had royal blue 73 Stag automatic, with it's original 3 liter engine.
Lovely sound. This and the Rover V8 are the best engines BL ever made. Yeah, the early ones had a few teething problems like most early versions of anything, but those can be sorted out with a little bit of time and money.
I was watching "New Tricks" the other day and they had a Stag on there. Sounded like the original V8 but Christ, it was a joy to watch! Especially since they gave it some welly!
This one's a standard Stag V8 - I assume you mean in the other video!
The Magenta one with the Rover 3.5 in the other clip had that engine fitted pretty much from new, when the Stag unit first let go - it wasn't anything to do with myself.
I'm a fan of the Stag V8 but can see the reason people fit the Rover/Buick unit - I don't think it's something I'd do myself though, having had nothing but good experiences with the Stag 3.0 - lovely engines when they're going right!
I recognise that car. I was partly responsible for it making that noise. It came to us in 1991 for a transplant from a straight six auto to a Man o/d V8. whilst the engine was out we repainted the engine bat which was finished in a rather fetching shade of underseal. yuk.
It was originally Yellow and had uk plates that ended in 375L
I brought that car into Ireland in 2004, and re-reg'd with the ZV reg. Absolutely loved that car - sold it on when someone made a good offer for it. Apparently it's in Cyprus now !
Sounds to the tune of my stag as well. I love these cars. Its just great when you park up and someone tells you what a beautiful car you have. (Nice one for keeping the origional triumph V8. We haven't had any problems with ours yet)
Sounds very similar to my Stag. A few years ago I installed a stainless steel exhaust system with large diameter resonators out the back end. It now has a nice metallic tone at idle and a deep throaty roar when revved. Sounds bitchin!
Nice - a great example indeed! Hope you don't mind me having the clip of it up (never knew where it came from). As you can see, it's inspired quite a discussion here! :P
With care, yes - provided you maintain regular servicing and most importantly, keep an eye on the coolant level and mixture.
Uprating the system does help but in good condition the original should be fine.
I know people who've used theirs as daily drivers for years, used and abused them, without any issues - sometimes even boiled them over and not suffered any ill effects!
I think the majority of the comments below reflect these sentiments :)
@carguymitch - ah come on, the Triumph engine sounds better than any US engine :P Granted the US ones sound great, but don't have the more melodic, high-pitched thrumm that the Triumph has. There's no mistaking the sound of the Triumph.
@McDaedelus - so long as the coolant is flushed every year, there's not much else needs doing. If the pipework and rad are in good nick, and the fan is efficient, it's fine. The problems in the past were mainly due to people not doing such servicing.
...I'm absolutely infatuated with Triumphs of this era. I love the mind-shatteringly good noises the Stag makes, but I'm somewhat wary of the 3.0L engine, and it's head-warping, kettle reputation.
I'm currently tossing up between a Mk.II 2500 TC and a Stag of roughly the same vintage. What needs doing to the little V-8 to make it work properly?
i've owned a stag for four years now and everybody who drives it falls in love with it the sound is truly amazing, fit a bigger rad and kenlow electric fan, check the water/coolant before you take it out and its one amazing engine. for more info please feel free to ask.
The Rover V8 was one of greatest engines of all time.
No matter which way one tries to analyse it, the Triumph V8 was miles off the standard. Anyway the whole point is not that the the Stag V8 had potential, it is that it was a completely unnecessary exercise.
Yea - 3 litre, overhead cam twin carb :) 145BHP and free revving right up to the redline at 6500. Well, might even do 7000 if it's a good one :D
Has its faults and it's foibles but now most of them (cooling related) are well sorted. In fact, most of them were just down to improper maintainence in the first place.
I like beetroot.

Wow- sounds almost as good as an american V8.
carguymitch 4 years ago
It technically is an American V8.
volvomantom 4 years ago
In this particular example, no it isn't. This is a a Triumph V8, a very different animal to the Buick/Rover V8.
McDaedelus 4 years ago 3
I'd disagree with this.
End of the day, the Rover V8 is nothing more than a piece of 'British pride' - it's nothing more than a Buick unit built by the Brits.
volvomantom 4 years ago
Actually, it's a pre war BMW design that the yanks couldn't make work, so we had to show them how to do it :)
DTG781 4 years ago
It's such a fucking shame that British Leyland were the people who built the Stag...
volvomantom 4 years ago
It is. If Triumph had just had some proper cash, a bit more time and a decent managment it'd have been groovy.
I added a clip of my Rover V8 one, check it out! Stag sounds much more rorty though, so I sold the RV8 one today....Might buy a manual 3.0 instead :)

What's the RPM at idle?
volvomantom 4 years ago
About 650-850RPM as per the manual (hot). On choke it's normally about 1500-2000 but I think this one's well warmed up ;D
LashoutUK 4 years ago
Is the engine a Triumph unit in the V8 then?
volvomantom 4 years ago

This has some good footage too, if you search for "Clarkson British car". Part 1 is a feature on the Stag.
Bit off the mark with the information about the engine but I'm sure you get the idea (wasn't "welded together" and a bit hyped up about the failures).
There's another Stag vid on my profile as well, of a 210BHP racing one.
