20 years ago, my dad's Nissan Z350 was stuck with the accelerator ON when he was coming home from work. I can't recall if he said it was the 71 or 60 FWY in Chino Hills, but the car was having major mechanical issues and he couldn't get it to shift into neutral of turn off (and obviously the breaks weren't working). Basically, he drove it off the shoulder of the freeway and did doughnuts in a field for over 30 minutes before "control" crashing it in a ditch. Stopped the engine. He was lucky.

Ive had a car accelerate out of control on me before. Turned the ignition off but it kept on running, then threw it into neutral but it took massive effort. People make it sound like its a piece of cake until it happens to them. RIP to this poor family.
Alot of talk about throwing in neutral, scraping wall, turn off ignition. The problem I see is when people panic they lose their ability to think clearly. I've raced for years and have had my throttle stick wide open. And even though I know what to do, sometimes there isnt time to make a difference before crashing. But you CAN try to get car in neutral, it may take a hard bang, or yank on gear lever because of the load the gears are under. Acceleration will stop, and that's KEY! GOD SPEED.

Dunno why everyone's blaming the driver. There were three other people in that car, two of which are adults and can just as easily have said to put the car in neutral. The 911 operator didn't make the suggestion either. If the problem was just not putting the car in neutral then they're all equally to blame (except for the child).

you cant put an automatic into nuetral when you are travelling 120 mph- your transmission will not allow you to- unless you override the electronics system- something alot of cars dont have easy access to
My camry was made in japan and i havent had one problem. No noise, no pedal problems, excellent gas mileage and no shaking like the ford trucks which was recalled a little while back because it shook while the driver pressed he brake. You dont know shit about cars because if you did you would know that asian cars such as toyota,nissan and hyndai are way better than ford,gm,etc when it comes to quality and durability. Theyre only bad when theyre made in the US.

This was a loaner from a Lexus dealer. Their car was being repaired and they took a rental/ loaner while the car was in the repair facility. I am thinking......big law suit.
In car and driver magazine, june 2011 the US DOT released the study that many of us were waiting for. The verdict? Other than matts catching on the gas pedal or similar things all accidents were driver error. "Pedal misapplication" was the word. This particular accident was caused by the wrong floor matts being installed. The car was a lexus es350, the matts were from a lexus rs.

Something happened that he couldn't in my opinion. Turning the car off would have locked the steering wheel, at that speed turning the key to on for steering could have started the car back on. I once test drove a used Explorer. I had the throttle stick due to a improperly positioned plastic cover over the throttle body. It accelerated until I hit the brakes hard and put it in neutral. VERY SIMPLE.

Although there were throttle failures on Toyotas, what the media ignored is that GM vehicles have more instances of unintended acceleration that Toyotas. And the media ignoring this could cause even MORE deaths.

For all you people who think you can just turn the engine off or put the car into neutral. People did try to do that. But the problem was with the computers getting stuck on accelerating and when you try to put the car into neutral the computer couldn't process the request to put the car into neutral because it's stuck accelerating.
you obviously know nothing about cars. let me educate you a little bit. these cars all have a manual link to the transmission, the shift lever is just that. the computer for the transmission has no way to over ride the driver as you state.
now lets go a little farther than that. the brakes on a car will overpower the engine, and the key will always shut off the car, same with the push button start.
@captainshwammy But people tried the brakes, turning off the engine, and putting the car into neutral and none of those things stopped or even slowed the car. And investigations back up my theory about the computer getting "Stuck" on accelerating.
@AustinBerndt as a former Toyota Technician, i can tell you with with complete confidence and rational thought connected with cold hard facts that the "computer" as you are envisioning it, does not exist. the transmission has a manual link to the driver. when you put it in neutral, it's in neutral mechanically ie. not done by a computer. i've been in cars doing test drives when the multiple floormats stuck the pedal down. they weren't all Toyotas. don't put multiple mats in your car.
@captainshwammy I just researched on Toyota's website and found that the Prius's gear selector has NO mechanical linkage. The gear selector operates a shift-by-wire mechanism to manipulate the CVT (continuously variable transmission).
thats all well and good but you don't know that the Prius is unable to accelerate while pressing the brake as the electric motor spins backwards during braking. it is mechanically impossible to hit both the gas and the brake in a Prius and the brake will always over ride the throttle. that guy who got busted lying about his Prius having unintended acceleration was laughed at by all Toyota mechanics the instant the story came out. if you knew the mechanics of it you would laugh to.
i was not including the Prius in my previous statement as it is very different mechanically than other vehicles. i also left it out because the Prius has mechanical limitations that make it totally impossible to continue accelerating after the brake pedal is pushed.

Ive had a car accelerate out of control on me before. Turned the ignition off but it kept on running, then threw it into neutral but it took massive effort. People make it sound like its a piece of cake until it happens to them. RIP to this poor family.

Alot of talk about throwing in neutral, scraping wall, turn off ignition. The problem I see is when people panic they lose their ability to think clearly. I've raced for years and have had my throttle stick wide open. And even though I know what to do, sometimes there isnt time to make a difference before crashing. But you CAN try to get car in neutral, it may take a hard bang, or yank on gear lever because of the load the gears are under. Acceleration will stop, and that's KEY! GOD SPEED.

Dunno why everyone's blaming the driver. There were three other people in that car, two of which are adults and can just as easily have said to put the car in neutral. The 911 operator didn't make the suggestion either. If the problem was just not putting the car in neutral then they're all equally to blame (except for the child).

My camry was made in japan and i havent had one problem. No noise, no pedal problems, excellent gas mileage and no shaking like the ford trucks which was recalled a little while back because it shook while the driver pressed he brake. You dont know shit about cars because if you did you would know that asian cars such as toyota,nissan and hyndai are way better than ford,gm,etc when it comes to quality and durability. Theyre only bad when theyre made in the US.

In car and driver magazine, june 2011 the US DOT released the study that many of us were waiting for. The verdict? Other than matts catching on the gas pedal or similar things all accidents were driver error. "Pedal misapplication" was the word. This particular accident was caused by the wrong floor matts being installed. The car was a lexus es350, the matts were from a lexus rs.

Something happened that he couldn't in my opinion. Turning the car off would have locked the steering wheel, at that speed turning the key to on for steering could have started the car back on. Automatic cars can be push started at high speeds so I've been told? Why is the question?

I once test drove a used Explorer. I had the throttle stick due to a improperly positioned plastic cover over the throttle body. It accelerated until I hit the brakes hard and put it in neutral. VERY SIMPLE.
How hard is it to take proper action BEFORE the vehicle hits 120?
Although there were throttle failures on Toyotas, what the media ignored is that GM vehicles have more instances of unintended acceleration that Toyotas. And the media ignoring this could cause even MORE deaths.

That lexus is a rear wheel drive car, and the shifter is probably directly connected to the transmission, no reason to not shift into neutral.

For all you people who think you can just turn the engine off or put the car into neutral. People did try to do that. But the problem was with the computers getting stuck on accelerating and when you try to put the car into neutral the computer couldn't process the request to put the car into neutral because it's stuck accelerating.

you obviously know nothing about cars. let me educate you a little bit. these cars all have a manual link to the transmission, the shift lever is just that. the computer for the transmission has no way to over ride the driver as you state.
now lets go a little farther than that. the brakes on a car will overpower the engine, and the key will always shut off the car, same with the push button start.

@AustinBerndt as a former Toyota Technician, i can tell you with with complete confidence and rational thought connected with cold hard facts that the "computer" as you are envisioning it, does not exist. the transmission has a manual link to the driver. when you put it in neutral, it's in neutral mechanically ie. not done by a computer. i've been in cars doing test drives when the multiple floormats stuck the pedal down. they weren't all Toyotas. don't put multiple mats in your car.

@captainshwammy I just researched on Toyota's website and found that the Prius's gear selector has NO mechanical linkage. The gear selector operates a shift-by-wire mechanism to manipulate the CVT (continuously variable transmission).

thats all well and good but you don't know that the Prius is unable to accelerate while pressing the brake as the electric motor spins backwards during braking. it is mechanically impossible to hit both the gas and the brake in a Prius and the brake will always over ride the throttle. that guy who got busted lying about his Prius having unintended acceleration was laughed at by all Toyota mechanics the instant the story came out. if you knew the mechanics of it you would laugh to.

i was not including the Prius in my previous statement as it is very different mechanically than other vehicles. i also left it out because the Prius has mechanical limitations that make it totally impossible to continue accelerating after the brake pedal is pushed.
