No. Read somewhere recently German dr/prof found infected tonsits in 1982, so assume he had tonsillectomy then. Maybe just cold or voice stressed from so much performing.

Must have been before Ian's tonsillectomy - voice became signifacantly better afterwards. Thanks to the German dr. who diagnosed it!

this is one of the better versions of this song.. I think this is how its really meant to be sung. I can feel the pain that was being expressed when the writer wrote this song. The only other version i can recommend is the Richie Sambora version which is also full of emotion..and rage...

From a whisper to 120 db, that's Deep Purple. I surely would trade 75% of all of the "Smoke On the Water"s that have ever been played on the air to hear their "deeper" material like this.
