No. Read somewhere recently German dr/prof found infected tonsits in 1982, so assume he had tonsillectomy then. Maybe just cold or voice stressed from so much performing.
Man I have been looking for this version for a while,Thanks to the Up...He got some sweet chops, and well... that volume knob thingy....sounds like that guitar is crying..Thumbs Up!
who steals the show here? steve morse, is the best guitar player on the planet, in my opinion. ian gillan, "way past his prime" (hell, he's been singing for 45 years), sings effortlessly on this.
Excellent performance! The best live version of this song is from the Bombay gig in 1995, one of the earliest gigs with Morse. That's the ultimate version, check it out.
this is one of the better versions of this song.. I think this is how its really meant to be sung. I can feel the pain that was being expressed when the writer wrote this song. The only other version i can recommend is the Richie Sambora version which is also full of emotion..and rage...
if you're leaving close the door.. i'm not expecting people anymore......... wow...

From a whisper to 120 db, that's Deep Purple. I surely would trade 75% of all of the "Smoke On the Water"s that have ever been played on the air to hear their "deeper" material like this. And Steve Morse does EVERYTHING on this song except sell popcorn in the audience. What immense talent. Thanks for the video ! Peace:)
Steve is great. Too bad I love Ritchie's playing better - just seemed like Purple then. But the band would have been "dis" banded again in '93!

I usually prefer live versions, but I do not know why this song loses feeling if compared with the studio version. But its ok, I liked also

Must have been before Ian's tonsillectomy - voice became signifacantly better afterwards. Thanks to the German dr. who diagnosed it!
