  • Can you do a episode about a goloid metric dollar?

  • what about AACGS (american alliance coin grading service), or SGS (star grading service)?

  • I like bidding on ebay

  • Hey everyone check ebay in the next few days and look for bi-centinial mint coins and u will find an excellent find

  • There's only one coin dealer within a few miles from me and the guy is a real asshole. He'll charge you $25 for him to give you advise! The next nearest coin dealer is almost 3 hours away. So my collection has been coming from online from the major known dealers, what sucks about that is they're always more expensive and also shipping fees. It's a little discouraging sometimes.

  • wat abt sgs ive never heard abt them before

  • Hey I am new to this but already enjoying it! One question, is it better to buy directly from the mint or buy perfect 70 certified coins from a dealer?

  • Can someone tell me if it's possible to purchase American platinum eagle coins from the mint at face value ($100) or is there no way around spending 1,500 bucks for one?

  • @TobinStrike Wow, if you can buy American platinum eagle coins from the US Mint for 100, back up the truck and buy every one you can (if there's any left after I stock up on them, that is) As of Aug. 23, the Mint website lists the price at 2092.00 !

  • when i was a newbie i bought alot of coins from a company called numismatic bureau. most of the coins i got were in au 50 or better there grade. well i learn than they were a bunch of scammers. the last time i got a coin from them it was graded ms 70 which i could tell it was not once i got it. they slab there own coins. basement scammers.

  • Mark, any advice on trustworthy, and responsible coin dealers in New York City? I am interested in getting involved in the hobby as a financially independent collector and thought some advice from professionals and hobbyists that are well established would be the best starting point. I have recently acquired a variety of early American $5 Half Eagles at a recent coin show in Philadelphia and am feeling optimistic about where these coins ($5 Half Eagles dated 1795 through 1838) might take me as

  • cool

  • I have a question? If you exchange money for silver money and take the face value don't you realize a loss if so then would a Business realize a profit of a loss in face value.

  • This is a reasonably good primer for a new coin collector. This video includes information on coin handling, historical facts and coin grading. Mark talks about three good coin grading services, PCGS, ICG, and NGC. We've also found that ANACS (formerly part of American Numismatics Association) to be quite good. His comment about "basement grading companies" are spot on.

  • Awesome new series. I didn't really take the time to watch these when they first came out but I'm going to catch up on them now.

  • @gold777silver well then obviously "accgs" sucks at grading. I'd rather go with the majority. Because anacs pcgs and apmex are at the top for a reason.

  • @David4everling Are you okay? gold777silver clearly noted that Coin World found that ACCGS clearly noted that some coins were cleaned, whereas PCGS and NGC didn't catch the cleaned ones. How that translates to ACCGS "obviously sucks" defies not only logic, but basic language. One doesn't have to think very deeply to know that exposure produces popularity. Since PCGS spends millions of dollars on advertising and ACCGS, owned by the Beverly Hills Coin Club, spends ZERO on self-promotion.

  • hey people /im a collector myself and im only 12 years old and Ive been collecting for 3 years now /come look at my videos of my coin collections and my paper money and stamps and comics come now and look at them .bye.

NGC: I Use For Gold Coins. (Any Gold Coins I Have)

Anacs: I use For World Coins.(Polish Coins, Russian Coins etc.)

ICCS: I use For Canadian Coins.

    CCCS: Mint Errors

  • should you ever clean your coins in any type of soulution. i havent done this but im very new to this hobby and dont wanna screw up but i was at a hobby shop and saw a coin cleaning solution but i dont know if its a scam

  • sgs (star gradeing survace) is a waste it doesent grade anything under a 60 just for the people tat dident know!

  • Would he just get on with it instead of endless pointless waffling on.

  • VERY INFORMATIVE!!!!!!!!!

  • want to give me some of your coins? lol im the low collector that collects change coins

  • Well I dont have any gold or silver coins but i have some coins that I appreciate a lot. They all are mexican coins from 1982 all the way to 1923. I have one from 1908 which was given to me by my grandfather who past away in 2009. Well, its not in good condition but it means a lot to me.

  • hihihihihihi

  • cool

  • That's cool

  • nice!

  • nice vid

  • cool video

  • Sweet

  • Cool!

  • great video

  • First and only rule to making money (easy resale..not waiting forever for a buyer for an overpriced coin) with coins.. BUY FOR THE METAL VALUE ONLY. Obviously, there will be a premium for the gold or silver in a coin form but the closer you can pay to spot, the better. The only thing rarer than a rare, expensive coin is a BUYER for one. Don't buy numismatic coins to make money. Buy them for their metal content. It will not only hedge against inflation, right now, your wealth will grow.

  • A prime choice for silver bullion coins with extra collector value! The Third Reich produced millions of 90% silver coins. Each Nazi 5 Reichsmark coin weighed 13.88 g and contained exactly 12.5 g of fine silver. Almost half an ounze of silver in each coin. These coins are still readily available today! And besides their inherant value as silver bullion, they are also genuine Third Reich collectables thus adding to their value!

  • o.k. i just found your video on peace dollars...thanx....

  • Mark, your video is awesome! How can I reach you with certain questions?

  • Great info.

  • Cool!

  • Thanks for this video, it'll help me with my coin collecting.

Good job with the show! :D

  • A GOOD JOB THANKS

  • 5 stars

  • thanks for the help.

  • The video's statement that the big 3 third party graders, PCGS, NGC and ANACS are trusted by "everyone" is patently false. A Coin World investigation in 2003 in which 11 coins were sent to them and PCI and ACCGS - in not one single case did any of the grading services agree with each other, and in some cases they were 7 points off. Look up PCGS on Wikipedia. I go to dozens of shows and see trash cans filled with broken slabs from all the grading companies, who are not infallible.

  • what would be your coarse of action in having a coin graded?

  • I wouldn't spend $30 to $40 (or more) to have a coin graded, not to mention the postage/insurance both ways. Most collectors and dealers know how to grade and thus millions of "raw" coins sell on eBay every year based only on posted pictures. But if you think slabbing is the only way to go, I would test it at one of the cheaper services first, such as PCI or ACCGS -the later charges only $9. If you go by the pictures on their Website and Coin World, they do just as good as the expensive guys.

  • Honestly, I've only just started but I never felt that I myself was not a good enough grader of quality for most coins if not all. Give me a good high resolution picture or a magnifying glass I am certain I can tell you the subtle differences. I'm glad you give the same advice I would! Never hurts to have a nicely packaged coin though from a professional. How does one become a professional with coins?

  • A Professional Numismatist earns the title just as in most other professions - Years of intensive experience, training, learning and focus. Although, even with that, graders may often disagree with each other, just as the most learned scholars often disagree with different interpretations of the Bible, Koran, Talmud, etc. There are subtle differences of die wear and striking strength to Uncirculated coins of the same design, & few experts can tell the difference between die wear & circulation.

  • I can see your knowledge expands way past coins. I have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge myself. It has lead me to many strange pieces of information. I talk to my uncle about the fasci and olive branches used in a lot of currency and on federal buildings. Interesting that they use that symbolism would you agree?

  • PCI is no more unless you count DGS, which they are still pretty liberal with their grading compared to the top tier services. At lest from my grading tests they were 2 points off compared to NGC and PCGS which hit it within a point. ACCGS is just like DGS/PCI imo. You might as well send your coins to SEGS too if you want that kind of grading. However it will make it very hard to sell. Grading is subjective but I prefer a conservative grading rather than a liberal one.

  • @markapsolon Apparently you didn't read the Wikipedia article nor fully grasp what LiesandTruthDetector posted. - He clearly said ALL grading services were off. Also, the "big three" are being cleverly counterfeited because they realize that some collectors such as yourself seem to prioritize blind faith in them. Counterfeit coins are showing up in authentic holders - Nine of the same counterfeit 1796 Quarters, each with the exact same flaws, have shown up in PCGS, NGC and ANACS slabs.

  • @Gold777Silver wikipedia is not a really good website to get information from. they've been known to lie.

  • Comment removed

  • @markapsolon I don't endorse any grading services, but I know bias when I see it, either that or it appears you didn't read the Coin World article either. Coin World clearly stated that ACCGS was more "conservative" - your primary criteria. ACCGS graded a coin as AU that PCGS graded as "MS 63". Further, ACCGS graded a coin as "cleaned" whereas NGC, ANACS & PCGS didn't, which the big 3 did the same thing with the Central American gold coins - all were heavily cleaned, but NOT noted on the slabs.

  • @markapsolon Coin World's investigation of 7 leading grading services was very extensive & contradicts your findings. In not one single case did the "big 3" agree with each other & in many cases, were as much as 7 points off. In most samples, Coin World found ACCGS was more conservative than PCGS & ACCGS correctly noted a few coins had been "cleaned" which were overlooked by PCGS & NGC. Not surprising, since PCGS graded many shipwreck gold coins without noting they had been in acid baths.

  • @LiesAndTruthDetector - No one is perfect but I don't trust them as I've seen them slab fakes as well as return coins that are different than the one sent.

  • @LiesAndTruthDetector - It's not surprising that with this video's sweeping generalizations, that it's gotten 15 thumbs down already.

  • Hi Mark! Enjoyed the video, nice production quality - certainly a step above.

Good advice, presented in what I would say is a far manner. Some reputable ebayers exist (eg who get circulation rolls and then distribute them singly or in yearly sets) but overall I agree with you 100%

Looking forward to the other episodes I see (already posted) as I'm a Canadian interested in collecting American decimal ... so don't feel that too much content is ever enough!

  • why would were gloves to handle slabs?

  • CHECK OUT EBAY USER ID DEEPADARKA2009

  • Comment removed

  • do you use the cottun gloves on the slabbed coins too!?!?!?

  • nope. no need to because they are encased

  • Where do you purchase the white cotton gloves?

  • What is wrong with raw coins? AU vs BU with premium.?

  • I'd put ANACS in there as a top three grading service instead of ICG. So the certified coins should either come from PCGS, NGC or ANACS.

  • since ICG and ANACS are/were pretty much the same graders both are good

  • waahhhhh

  • Hey, mark can you send me info on list of bad companys. Thank you

  • i was worried for a minute that my slabed coin isnt from a good company. I checked and its NGC *sighs in relief* : )

  • random

  • Anyone else smell hemp?

  • It looks a lot different from the last one . Still great!

  • Nice video, I'd love to trade all my darn baseball cards for just a few ounces of silver!

  • I can't wait for the next contest... 40,000 subs :)

  • I would love to hear why you left ANACS out and put ICG in third place I believe ICG is in that bad place i seen some pretty awful grades from them to me ANACS is way better can you explain why you left ANACS out thanks I would love to hear from you ...Tom

  • this video was god but it lost my interest fast

  • Nice to hear someone descreetly call out these criminal grading companies!! NGC PCGS and ANACS / ICG are the good guys! So many coin guys defend the bottom tier slabbers because they are benefitting from it. Best avoid these sellers altogether even if they have some NGC PCGS .coins. There are dozens of questionable grading serices to avoid. Easier to list the good guys. Avoid NNC SGS NTC USCG PCI now DOMINION HALLMARK. Some are worse than others. Most are grading thier own coins!

  • PCGS NGC and ANACS/IGC only. However, there are MANY counterfeit holders on eBay. EBay WAS great. TOO risky now. Eventually you will get burned!

  • Georgia Peach is apparently the most valuable of the State Quarters.

  • I'm starting a collection of 3 Cent Silver pieces from 1851-1862 (Including 1862 2 over 1 and Key Dates) for a Dansco Album. The album also has 20 Cent Pieces on the 2nd page, which I will collect later.

  • Ebay is safe for the seasoned collector because they know what to look for and what effects a coins value. A not so seasoned you may get tricked into buying a slabbed NTC that is rated a MS66 but is way off. My advice Ebay is good for small purchases and sometimes base value metal. If you want your dream coin find a more reputable offline outfit.

  • yay new zeland!

  • I disagree with keeping coins in a bank. Banks are NOT a safe place to keep anything at all, especially coins because coins are often made of silver (or gold) which can (and have been) confiscated by the government. Keep coins in your home.

  • Nice little film. I'd like to see the one on the Peace dollar when you put it out.

  • i got a silver coin dats worth a ton ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

  • do you have any advice on collecting coins

  • Folks you know about the NZD on the stock exchange.Pick up a new York times sometime

The NZD New Zealand dollar is now at 63 cents

The NZD has been raising for the last 8 months

NZ former Chancellor Helen Calrk is now in the U.N.

NZ new Chancellor John Keys has been on top of his game.

And Iam pretty sure NZ will not be wasting any money in a stupid war

Also if the shit hits the fan in American you may want to visit NZ

  • Fine, I am moving. Clean up your doghouse. Sorry Rover, inside the house for you. lol

  • Now the NZD is at 72 cent however last month it was up to 78 cents on the USD

The austrialian dollar is at 80 cents

  • The American dollar will go a lot lower in 2010. Plus, look for an attack on Iran. Iran just started doing oil transactions not using the American Dollar. Reminds me of when S. Hussein said that he would use another dollar to replace the American Dollar.

  • Nice thanks for the info

Today I heard on the new in NZ that there is talks about the NZ dollar maybe merging with the Austrialian dollar.

Many people in NZ worry about the High dollar here because it would hurt the farmers exporting

on a different note meny Americans are buying kiwi gold coins and keeping them here as a safe heaven against the economic crisis.

Here in NZ they say the economic crisis is over

If the shit hits the the hippo's fluttering tail NZ is a very nice place

  • I love collecting coins.

  • me too, what a surprise

  • Ok this was a good video. Though this guy has misstated a few things. First the top 4 grading companies should be PCGS, NGC, ANACS, AND ICGS. Second, a mint state coins is not a coin that has never been touched. A mint state starts off has coins with ware, but can have blemishes, scratches, and bag marks. Third, eBay is ok to use, just watch out for ratings, if they guarantee returns, and never buy from China...

  • Sorry for the typo, a mint state coin starts off with coins with now ware.

  • ANAC is an ok one too I just left it out. I would use PCGS and NGC more than any other. Still lots of bad stuff on ebay and unless you know the seller I would avoid it.

  • how did you put 2 vids in 1 like see ur one one side of the screen while the coins are on the other how did u do that could i do that in windows movie maker

  • if you put your coins in a regular postal envelope are you damaging them??

  • over time it may tone them a little bit

  • Tools you may need in coin Numismatist click my pennyondime95. thanks

  • 10,000 views? How much silver bulion will that buy you from your revenue sharing?

  • I got some of the pres dollars from apmex that are BU and jsut in flips. They look good to me.

  • Yes, they are worth $1 each.

  • yeah and the state quarters are worth 25 cents its all about what you feel like having. If I have a few grand for perfect 70s I would have a few but I don't so i get what i can afford and what i like.

  • i find rare coins but in bad shape

  • Thanks for your educational and fun videos!

  • I buy and sell on Ebay. I have never had a problem. You will find coins on Ebay you can't find at a dealer. You just need to see what's on there and look at hundreds of coins, and know what you want.

  • what about ANACS is that a good grading company?

  • Ranked third, it is a 2nd tier company. It is okay.

  • So, why should I avoid Ebay?

  • not much of a coin collecter but watever

  • Awesome video! I love those proof sets!

  • Pure genius-great production.

  • I have some old coins I want to preserve. Thanks for the help

  • Collecting Coins from different countries is my Favorite Hobby {:

  • was santa claus his ebay name? hahaha

  • where do you get the cases for the coins?

  • Depending on what you want you can get them from your local coin shop or order them online. There are a variety of holders out there.

Not to mention Albums. I recommend Dansco albums over whittman folders although the folders are cheap.

  • Where is Episode 4? I like this series, Talk about why there were only 24 1894-S dimes, the 1913 liberty head, and Commemoratives.

  • What person is on ebay selling cheap coins, not as in cheap prices but cheap coins?

  • Trick question. Cheap to one is expensive to others. Most coins on Ebay can go from $5 on up. So you need to narrow down what you want.

  • ool more quarters!

Did you hear abo0ut the new pennies?

    Abes life on 4 coins!

    ;D

    Helives!

  • The only problem with the video is it hits on to much stuff. I've seen mint state coins in the packaging with finger prints on the coins.

Knowledge is key. If you don't have an idea on grading you will get screwed. If your going to start off small & cheap you won't do to bad.

One thing you have to watch out on slabs is those top companies he mentioned had problems with stealing peoples coins. As well as grading it the way you want if you pay enough.

  • From my experiences the top companies are the most legit in the market and would never slab a coin with a paid for grade. True every once in a while I disagree with a slabbed grade but grading is subjective. If you do not like the coin do not buy it :)

  • That is true grading is subjective. Accugrade was one that use to do that if you paid them enough that MS65 could become a 70.

Granted one can always argue about the grade but sometimes it's just better to argue about the price.

  • Someone has some money, $20 gold is way up there.

  • Depends on what you got some of them based on condition may be worth gold.

  • Have you been watching the double tier gold market over the past few months. You are not even going to find a liberty double eagle in AU for under a grand. The NYC spot is not matching the real market both buying and selling. Makes you wonder if the NYC spot is being controlled by an external force.

  • In Florida Dealers pay a bit behind bid and those that want to buy usually want to pay at bid or ask. The thing is many are buying gold for bullion not for it's numismatic value.

Also see some fakes. For some reason people believe brass replicas are really gold. :(

  • Other then key dates, pre 1800's and platinum, not many coins are worth more then double eagles,Double eagles range from 1,000 for the worst grades to over million for the 1927d. I believe the highest selling double was a 1933 for 7.5 million.

  • But you know the reason that 33 went for that much money was because there are only like 3 in existence cause gold coins were outlawed & melted down. That coin was sneaked out of the country & when it came back to be auctioned the government took it. Ultimately they came to an agreement of splitting the money in the auction.

  • thanks

  • I know theres people on ebay that sell those fake encapsuled coins that are over graded. I feel sorry for the idiots that buy from them. But then again there's some good people out there that sell raw uncertified coins and are very honest with there grades and don't disappoint you.

  • most of them aren't idiots tho. The chinese are making really good looking fakes now a days and they're really bad for average collectors and below

  • Your right! We've seen some fakes that were so good that even the gradding companies slabbed them as real.

Also they are making fake coins with fake grading companies slabbs such as NGC & SEGS
