I am a veteran of all HoMM. Most people rate 3 highest but IMO 5 is better although not made by the original company 3DO. The most important thing for me is game balance and it was bad in HoMM 3 (haste, slow, town portal, logistics too decisive - most spells and skills were useless) and it got even worse in HoMM 4 (speed of units was everything).

Some people may dislike HoMM 5 graphics etc.. but it is most elaborated in terms of good gameplay.

I also played the WoG mod for HoMM3 a lot.

man i remember that in heroes 2 there was this invincibile ghost unit, that had same power as the upgraded vampire, but to no limit and it was depending on how many units it killed, u could have millions of it and keep getting more every battle lol

2 suggestions for this guy. Amp up the animation settings for the battles in the CPU bar. And turn music from mono to stereo with opera! Then u get the legit Heroe 2 experience

@ElCommentor I don't understand, why I should amp up animation speed. I play it, as I like it. The music of course, I am using with opera, I've set midi just for purpose of recording under Dosbox, cause from unknown reason, it didn't work with audio CD.

Btw, in time, when HOMM2 came up, there wasnt stardart soundblaster, or CD-ROM, so if you had at least music midi, you would be happy in that time. I've started HOMM2 in that time with midi.

Don't like HoMM 3 at all. Boring graphics; casual elements such as capitol for buying all growth, and castle for increasing it; boring campaigns; all castles can have both mage and warrior heroes; all castles have a flyer, low-level shooter, almost all 7th identical. HoMM 2 - best of series, sharing pedestal with HoMM 4.

Ouch its missing the soundtrack. The midi music was no where near as good.

I prefer this over HoMM3, as the creature sprites where animated far better. Their pixel art style was great at the time, and they had very good animation sequences.

The sequences for walking, flying, etc, in HoMM3 were awful, be it their first 3D or not. It did have interesting elements of gameplay added though.

HoMM3 is probably better in gameplay, since there are a lot more creatures to hire, more artifacts, more stuff...

but I like this HoMM2 more than any other HoMM, the IA is by far the best.... very challenging ( i wonder why newer HoMMs got worse IA)

I love also this 2D fantasy graphic and these amazing sound effects as well as the superb music.

@Rattopaz Homm4 has a shitty AI?.. What are you smoking?... HOMM4 is the hardest HOMM yet.. Try to complete the campaigns on normal difficulty and come back again. You have a lot more to think about in HOMM4 and generally if you lose your hero and your monster build doesn't fit the enemy.. You are fucked even with balanced forces.

Homm2 has a really easy AI as I remember it.. Finished the campaign on hard difficulty in a flash.

Skirmishes are nothing on intermediate.. hard and up is challenging.
