If you admire Anthony Jackson's work, you MUST seriously check out James Jamerson. "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", the movie and (especially) the book are a perfect place to start. The concept of the bass part as counter-melody, while maintaining the bass function is exemplified by both men's playing.
3. nathan east - love will follow ( kenny loggins)
4. marcus miller - nightwind (tom browne)
all are here on youtube. enjoy and tell me your favorite "record date" bass performances. not long-form jazz performance and not bass solo. i wanna hear amazing performances on 4 minute receords it's amazing what they got away with on a pop/r-n-b record!
Hard to say without looking at the actual chart. My guess is that, if anything was written out at all it would have been whichever bass lines are repeated exactly every time, particularly when they play the head of the tune. Typically, a tune like this is mostly chord changes to improvise over, with a few notated passages and/or rhythm slashes. Again, it is hard to say. Anthony IS a master improviser, so he would be perfectly capable of composing a bass line on the spot.
@losernamehere He does the improvisation very much like Gary Willis does it. He looks at the chord changes on the chart, which he's going to improvise over. Then he relies on his ear training (for intervals, not chords) to give him ideals when he plays. Jamerson is Jackson's main influence (you can hear that on this tune), and Jamerson = melodic bassline that uses downbeat-oriented, 16th notey phrases :-)
Actually, it's all about understanding the format of the tune itself, all its sections and changes AS A FRAME. After that is understood, all the riffs you hear throughout are improvised according to where the music is and what AJ's feeling. That is the goal of any musician...to express themselves however they want, whenever they want, assuming it's not contradicting the overall feel or mood and is not completely raining on any of the other bandmates' parades.
agreed i ordered a 6 string thats coming today and i would'nt have been able to without him and i had never heard of him till i started looking for 6 string players
Yep I meant modern era because AJ is still relevant when it comes to top bassplayers. He's still on the cutting edge of bass technology and construction as well as being one of the better, more well rounded players. The only thing he doesn't do on bass is slap and pop. You'd be hard pressed to find a more passionate and funky technician. He may not be as famous but his playing certainly speaks for itself.Of course that's just my opinion! haha!
I had the opportunity to listen and see Anthony Jackson back in New York in 1982. He was one of my main influences. Is because of him that i got a Fodera Anthony Jackson Contrabass. Congratulations Anthony.
Anthony Jackson is nothing less than a master and he certainly deserves this tribute.
My fav recordings with Anthony are definetely with Eyewitness where he plays with Steve Khan, Steve Jordan and Manolo Badrena. Unfortunately not many people are aware of these gems
If you are a fan of Anthony do yourself a favour and get your hands on these 3 albums:
Or get the "Overtime" DVD or CD of Lee Ritenour. I got the DVD the other day for my birthday. Its just the best of the best making music together (also a. jackson) Pretty impressive. Its worth buying it!!!
I never had a favourite bass player - there are so many greats (Nico, Jaco, Alain, Jeff......) and then I got my first Steve Khan and Eyewitness album years ago: "Casa Loco." A.J. is my absolute favourite bassist ever. Anthony, while playing the song, while playing the instrument, ALSO PLAYS WITH YOUR HEAD. He's the first to successfully pull that off. He's the puzzler. Frickin' genius.
Thanks for posting this. A true genius I remember seeing him 1st play on the Grovnor Washinton Video, which I still have on VHS somewhere. He always said the bass is a guitar, so therefore it should have 6 strings!
ANTHONY JACKSON,a truly under rated bass player if there ever was one,A real genius, a SUPERIOR MUSICIAN who happens to be a bass player,AJ is the REAL DEAL!
AJ has done amazing works with Michel Petrucciani, Al DiMeola (I don't really care much for Al's playing or his music, but AJ did contribute some amazing bass to it) One of my favorite AJ bass lines is "Glamour Profession" from the Steely Dan CD "Gaucho"...There is just SO much great stuff AJ has done...did you know he's the bass player on Billy Paul's "Me and Mrs Jones" AJ was just a teenager!!! And of course, AJ played bass on the O'Jays "For the Love of Money"
On top of that, it has Dennis Chambers on drums (he is a sick puppy!!!) Chambers and Jackson together are incendiary! Then there is yet another "side" of Anthony Jackson. To me, the work he did on Chaka Khan's "Naughty" and "What 'Cha Gonna do For Me" is the most incredible bass playing I have ever heard on a Pop/R&B record. It is amazing the stuff he gets away with! I could go on and on...
It is a different side of AJ, though no less impressive. I recently bought a new release by Steve Khan called "The Suitcase" which is a live double CD just released last year, but was recorded back in 1994. Anthony's playing on this CD is UNREAL!!! He does some crazy stuff with effects...he does solo stuff (though he's known for not liking to tak solos). I'd have to say, this one CD is the most incredible AJ I have EVER heard!!!
I am a huge Anthony Jackson fan just like you. I am a bass player, and he has been, by far, my biggest influence...more than Jaco, or anyone else. Well, everything he's done with Michel Camilo is amazing. In particular, I like these Camilo CD's: Suntan, Why Not?, Rendezvous and Triangulo. Unfortunately, it seems as if they are no longer playing together : (. To me, the other side of the "Anthony Jackson Coin" would be the stuff he has recorded with Steve Khan/Eyewitness.
The greatest compliment anyone could possibly pay a bass player is to say their playing is reminiscent of AJ. I was told that once, whether the guy was wearing 'beer headphones' or not it was a good feeling. When you listen to someone enough something of theirs rubs off on you in the end, and there is no greater musician for a hack like me to steal from than Anthony Jackson!
Glad to see someone showing respect for Anthony - one of the greatest bassists of all time. I've been trying to find this Metro track for a while as well, thanks!
I have played bass for 20 years, have played like and along with many: Jaco, Larry, Marcus, etc. In my book, Anthony Jackson is one of the most thorough, gifted, and THE most versatile and seamless bassist Ever. Only his idol, James Jamerson, compares. The boy is no joke!
That is very true, Anthony is a true innovator and has been on countless recordings for other artist. Many players have there own voice but not the flexibility to be in the comfort zone in every area of music. He is a total musician.
not too sure about the greatest bass player alive. There are so many out there.Dave Carpenter Steve la spina Patitucci-Geoorge Mraz Gary Willis these are only the popular ones..
well, first of all, orlandoCF1 said "one of the greatest" NOT THE GREATEST!!! Secondly, Dave Carpenter cannot be one of the greatest players ALIVE because he just passed away recently...thirdly, what each one of us perceives as "the greatest" will be different, just like your favorite kind of food may be different to mine. Fourthly (if that word even exists)this tribute means no disrespect to any other bass player, but simply reflects a personal opinion which is debatable.
well not to get get too techy with the words.I know Anthony personally and i have played with the guys he plays with.I know very well I'm in the business. The other guys mentioned were used as examples of musicianship and what's brought to the table when they play. When I hear musicians it's like listening to a conversation. Some people say meaningful things others just talk.Anthony #1! take care..
Anthony is not just one of the greatest; he is a true innovator, a pioneer and has a unique voice on his instrument...how many contemporary bass players can say that?
You are welcome! Is the CD still available? I had a really hard time finding it. All I had for years was a cassette copy, till someone sold me the CD through eBay...
