the english team of the early 90s were violent and arrogant to the point they organized operations to injure other international players. Well done number 14 who just picks the little bugger up.
Carling always had a great outside break, he set up most of JG's tries and is a very under-rated player. I'd have him in my all time England team, no doubt about that. England were utter shit before Will rocked up as skipper, and we were marvellous when he was at the helm. Shame he got made to look silly at the sevens though
@mcs1hr - I agree completely. He was a great player who had an embarrassing moment. Dominici was a superb winger who had a similarly comic incident (without even having an opponent near him) and Leguizamon is still a fine player for Argentina in spite of his hilarious missed try for London Irish.
Some of the comments on here are very wide of the mark - but then, this is YouTube...
Wow... That was the most pathetic tackle I have possible seen... He could have picked the 90 pound kid up and threw him into the stands but no... Let's play the " pick him up and gently drop " game!
@laupsnevert - yes, he was surprisingly quick, and I'd always thought Hunter had some pace himself. The England backline composed of Carling, Guscott and the Underwoods must have been one of the quickest we ever had - shame they didn't get the ball more often!
Does anyone know why this doesn't happen more in rugby these days?
Can't say I've ever tried it in a game but nowadays if a player get over the opponents dead ball line the only thing opposition players tend to do is either watch or block his way from getting the ball down to nearer the posts,
Why not try to push him over the dead ball line? Bit unsportsman like but if it stops them getting a try then who cares?
Good question - I would guess it's because players nearly always dive for the line these days, whether there's anybody near them or not. It looks like showboating but it's probably quite wise - who can forget Dominici strolling in under the posts unopposed against Italy and then dropping the ball?
There is something incredibly satisfying about seeing him being picked up and dumped over the line, like a cheap tart trying to get away from a pair of randy sailors.
Nice. I guess there are at least 57 old farts who could of got it down.. but iam sure there are worse problems in life than "not being able to get it down"
Amazing the full sized bags of oven readies that reside on the shoulders of the Taffs.
I heard one of them calling Wilkinson arrogant recently.
Basically, to them everyone in England is 'arrogant' because apparently they think themselves superior. Clearly when you start calling JW arrogant it is more down to Welsh inferiority.
It's more the media I have an issue with than the English themselves. I have lots of English friends and i've never had anything but interesting and insightful conversations about rugby with them.
hm yes..or perhaps, you should go fuck yourself ?...
JW represents everything that is bad about English rugby. Shane Williams is a talisman for rugby, he shows the way it should be played. The slow, penalty based game, relying on set peice and slow ruck ball, is the bane of every welshmen, newzealander australian, and every other nation whos knows how the game should be played. And now with JW gone, you've got no one to kick a ball. Cymru am byth!
Perfectly put onebigretard. I would like to add to that watch the last rwc final, and the way SA played against england... All penalties or drop goals, whilst england played adventurous rugby, and nearly scored twice through tait and cueto. Wales were one of the most boring teams this 6nations, hardly any tries.
Jonny Wilkinson was a class player, just because teams gave away penalties against England to stop them getting quick ball and unleashing the likes of Greenwood, Robinson and Lewsey doesn't mean England were bad for taking their points, they have a world cup to show for it to cap off an absolutely amazing 02/03 season.
I had a lot of time for Carling as a player and this "almost try" showed great pace to go with his other attributes....I just think he was socially handicapped so didn't endear himself to a lot of groups particularly us Welsh.
Yes, and he was spot on with his "old farts" comments. Thanks to these outdated, gin swilling, pompous and arrogant idiots (and you pillocks think CARLING'S arrogant!!!)our game has not reached the consistent heights it should have. Carling was a great player and captain and if you knew the REAL him, you'd know he wasn't any more arrogant than the rest! I'll listen to Brian Moore, Wint's, Jason Leonard, Teagy NOT you weekend Warriors/ "daily star" readers who know sod all!
Well said. Although I posted this because it was a funny incident it wasn't meant to unleash a barrage of anti-Carling and anti-English abuse (call me naive!). I've always had a lot of time for him and think he did a hell of a lot for English rugby.
It was definately a funny incident, Carling himself declared what he thought and it wasn't positive! The actual abuse on this board falls into insignificance to the stuff barked at him by his team mates that day!!
What because he is a fair commentator? The best commentator who ever lived? Shut up you stupid prick, I bet McClaren was fucking laughing inside, but he is too polite to make fun of Carling.
The tackle is valid. Carling was complacent, thought that the try was scored but got held up. I'd love to have been a fly on the dressing room wall afterwards.
Woodhouse is a mate of mine and he was definitely playing for Rosslyn Park that day, I'll ask about the red and white kit when I next see him. He was on the winning team of the Middlesex 7's something like the 3 previous seasons for Quins.
It was against Rosslyn Park, I believe, and the guy who picked him up was called Alex Woodhouse, a former England U-21 scrum half. Top bloke as well, I knew him when we worked at the same company.
this Welshman actually has a man crush on good old Bum Chin, despite the utter hidings his English side used to dish out to us.

I could not agree more. The media knows nout about rugby.
However the mainstream British press is understandably English-centric.
The Welsh based media is very very biased. Understandably.
I just think it has little to do with reality and more to do with people's distorted self-image.

Yeah, maybe that is why you are so good.
Australia won their last RWC on defence and forcing penalties.
Even as shit as England is in this 6n we still scored more tries than Wales.
3 World Cup finals, how has Wales done?
Yeah JW is a terrible player mate. No way he would of made the Wales team!
I tell you what, come talk to me after you guys beat one of the big three away, or get out of the group stages of the World Cup.
When you next achieve that I will be happy to apologise.

Yes, it was Rosslyn Park, and Woodhouse was a very good player. I think both he and Hunter were both ex-Harlequins at this point.
Incidentally, I'm not anti-Carling at all - I was actually quite a fan of his. I posted this clip purely because it's funny!
RickTransit 5 years ago
I don't think you guys have it right - surely at the Middlesex 7s Rosslyn Park would have played in their red and white hoops.
It was even more embarrassing for Carling - he was against the students of Borough Road College - part of the West London Institute.
Better known for its athletics production line than rugby. Not in the St Lukes/Loughborough class
