  • The ART of SINGING. De Luca's artistry, beautiful tone quality and Chiaroscuro are all symbolic of the Golden Era which cannot be heard on any operatic stage .

  • Toscanini said of De Luca, "He is absolutely the best baritone I ever heard." Certainly at his best his voice possessed exceptional beauty of tone in the middle register and he was a master of lyric, smooth-toned legato singing.

  • splendid. doesn't take it too fast like the modern recordings.

Chapeau a De Luca

  • I feel like I'm floating on smooth seas listening to him.

  • What an intelligent comment from cantormatis....thank you for your sensitivity and decency. This site is a treasure trove for lovers of the vocal art, sadly marred by the many fatuous and ignorant comments, even vitriol, so often heaped on worthy artists and decent human beings.

  • One thing I love about this generation of singers- they rarely if ever seem to push. Of course, we have little idea of what they might have sounded like in the house. But our ears seems to demand louder singing, is my guess, and more importantly is that we have several generations of really mediocre conducting- conductors who don't understand how to get the hell out of the way of the singer!

  • INKREDIBLE ,WHAT A VOICE!!!

  • Unfortunate as the inevitable deterioration of all recordings by the greatest operatic singer, student singers I was trained with in 1950 were always referred to this giants renditions--especially this classic from La Traviata. Tragically, and with very commercial and money-valued societies, culture shrinks quickly and finally dies. America, my country, has already lost its great past culture--it has never lived up to the meaning of all existence: building our spiritual inner lives

  • Isn't this a half-tone lower? Well, it's not so difficult to transpose down from Db to C for all, no crowning Gb's and he barely skims an F at the end. But so what, it's a treat to hear one of the great singers of 100 years ago.

  • There is no question about deluca s greatness, however a better selection could have been found. He sings well, but he is obviously past his best here.

  • ..these old school inflections and technique are a bit hard to get used to....but this is how it was.....great singing nonetheless

IMMENSO !!! IMMORTALE !!!! GRAZIE !

  • Artiste capable de nuances subtiles, beau phrasé legato, voix colorée et ronde ,belle interprétation! Un grand baryton!

  • Splendid interpretation. Perhaps not a big voice, perhaps the higher notes have a slightly different color, but what a technique!

Round, with beautiful legato, splendid phrasing. Beautiful diminuendo on the third "Dio mi guido"

    O in "vecchio genitor" darkened.

"Dio m'esaaaaaudi"! And beautiful pianissimo "ti trovo ancor" 3:50 and again, splendidly prolonged the last "esaaaaaaaudi".

  • This has been audio processed to an inch of it's life and it's not even close to the de Luca's true sound. You can hear it is him, but my God!, what's been done to the sound! The essential character of his voice is barely intact.

  • Something special ... to the last syllable of recorded nostalgia ! Cheers!

  • Certainly one fo the great baritones - aged 53 here. - John Austin, Australia

  • He sounds quite old in this recording - anybody know if he was or whether it's only the quality of the recording or something he is doing "artificially" with his voice because the character is older?

  • Virtually all of de Luca's recordings- including this one- are characterized by beautifully focussed, pure tone, seamless legato, and crystal clear diction. The singing here is ever so delicately shaded, and full of warmth and nobility. Simply wonderful.

  • Definitely my favorite baritone.

  • :) Definately the best baritone I've heard recorded.

  • I can only say that this projects (100 singers; the greatest voices of all time) can not leave the greatest lyric baritone of all times out. The project won't have credibility if Di luca is not in.

  • This is by far the best Di Provenza I've ever heard! And I have heard quite a lot of versions.

Giusspe di Luca should be a role model for all young aspiring baritones!!

  • Thank You! The brilliant performance of this outstanding aria!

100 Greatest Singers is wonderful project! Thanks for bringing so many best singers to worldwide audience. At the same time IMHO some singers could have be better shined with different songs than selected. E.g. for Pavarotti Nessun Dorma or Donna Mobile are probably the bests, Alfredo Kraus - Je Crois Entendre, whilst Caruso - Una Furtiva Lagrima... May be you could start another projects -" 100 best performances"

    with respect

  • Best Baritone Ever!!! ( Thank you for posting~)

Pity that baritones these days don't know how to sing...

Personally like De Luca better than Tito Gobby...

  • What a great artist De Luca was, worthy of any list of great singers! Perhaps his voice was not as stentorian as Ruffo's or Stracciari's,

but his bel canto style, phrasing, technique, and vocal color are impeccable.

Chapeau a De Luca

  • Classy classy.

  • This cannot be from 1929 because it's an acoustic recording. Wonderful nonetheless!
