  • when was this video made, Riva died in 1985 right?

  • Eddie Sweat says hi to every horse he passes by

  • The movie Secretariat was awful! There is such a wonderful story to tell, that should include the devotion of this fine man Eddie Sweat.

  • Wonderful vid! It should be attached to the movie "Secretariat" since that disaster didn't see fit to even MENTION Big Red's less fortunate STABLEMATE!

But thanks so much for the post!

  • @tizfrreecharm

I don't think it was a "disaster" of a movie, but I sure was a little chagrined to see no story of Riva. He didn't exist in it.

  • OUTSTANDING FOOTAGE....Thank you so much for sharing this. I met Charlie Davis and see a few shots of him in this as well. I sure wish I could have met Eddie Sweat and Lucien Lauren. I was honored in Sept. 2011 to attend the SECRETARIAT festival and meet Charlie Davis. I got many pics with he & I at the Kentucky Horse park in front of the Bronze Statue of Ronnie on Secretariat with Eddie. I WAS HONORED !! Oh Happy Day ! Thanks again, this is great !

  • Riva had legs for daysssss! :) Kinda funny looking but sure could run!! I read that he had to be pampered and reassured all the time and would get depressed if he didn't get lots of attention. Fantastic clip!! Love seeing Eddie Sweat and Lucien Lauren!!!

  • This is my horse, Blues Encore's Grand Sire :) Riva Ridges son, Encoriva is my horses father :D Riva Ridge is so much like Beau, my mom was amazed at how alike they look and how their personalities are exactly alike, even the ears back teeth showing attitude!!! So weird!!

  • Thank you for posting this. It's awesome to see actual footage after reading Secretariat! Very Educational too. I don't think he was "homely" as the book says he is. He has his own charm.

  • He was such a leggy thing wasn't he? He was a beautiful horse though with a lot of talent.

  • I made my luck on KISSIN KRIS and MY MEMOIRS but RIVA RIDGE was my thrill before I was too young to bet. What a horse! I am married to Kris, and live in a Paris apartment paid for on the winnings. Dancing Kris and all the Kris line are of great interest, and MY MEMOIRS was a fabulous mare who survived a terrible fire. Thank you for this!

  • I loved when when he's pulling on Eddie's sweater and he calls him a clown, you could see he had a great personality, I wonder if this is from the ABC piece they did on him before the Preakness...

  • everyone loved him he use to eat my peanut butter sandwhiches out of tack box then one day i caught him i thought the other groom or someone was gettin em he was a gentle horse.how did they ever come up w/ this film my god it has been so long.

  • everyone loved him he use to eat my peanut butter sandwhiches out of tack box then one day i caught him i thought the other groom or someone was gettin em he was a gentle horse.

  • I love his ears <3 He's very cute!

  • Thanks, just finished reading about Riva and Eddie and to see them up close, very satisfied. Thanks again

  • What a treat to see such great quality footage of the actual persons (Eddie and Lucien) at work with the actual horse, Riva Ridge! Thanks so much for sharing!! Beautiful! Both Riva Ridge and Secretariat retired too young - they wanted to continue to run!

  • From the Daily Racing Form (DRF.com) 09/30/2010 - Penny Chenery on the movie "Secretariat" - “The movie barely mentions Angle Light in the race call of the Wood,” Chenery said. “That, Riva Ridge, and my sister would be the three major omissions in my estimation. It was Riva Ridge who really saved the farm, but that would detract from the story, wouldn’t it?” Riva Ridge was always Ms. Chenery and Lucien Laurin's favorite.

  • Still my favorite name of all Derby winners, Riva Ridge.

  • We are the proud owners of Riva Ridge Great Grand-daughter named ACHIEVE N BELIEVE. I cannot say enough great things about this lineage! And after much research, agree that Riva did not get the attention, it was too soon for his retirement. And will be forever missed!

  • Riva Ridge never seemed to get the credit he deserved. Great race horse with a big heart. It's great to see Eddie Sweat and Lucien Laurin working with Riva Ridge, one year prior to Secretariat winning the Triple Crown. If it weren't for a muddy track at the Preakness, maybe Riva Ridge could have won the Triple Crown in 1972. Beautiful horse who died way too young (age 16). Thanks for sharing this wonderful video!

  • God bless you Eddie Sweat. You loved Secretariat and Riva, not because you were going to get rich off them but because you loved them. You never got the credit you deserved. I hope you're brushing Big Red right now.

  • It's amazing how different Riva and Secretariat looked. Secretariat was so big and muscular and Riva looked like a deer !

  • I read that Eddie Sweat called Riva Ridge ''Pea Head'' because of his small head !

  • Amazing! Thanks for sharing.

  • CAÑONERO SE LO GANO,CAÑONERO UN VERDADERO CAMPEON

  • Wow....I really like the behind the scenes video. I had one of Riva's granddaughters. Looks like her cribbing is a familial trait. However, now I have a great-granddaughter of Riva Ridge. Her name is Gypsy's Dreamer. She is just started ground work and her trainer is expected to get in the saddle tomorrow.

  • Thanks so much for posting this! It's so great to see behind the scenes, especially Eddie Sweat!

  • Thanks for posting the video. A great insight to a great horse.

  • i know riva`s granddaughter

    her name is AnnaRiva

  • Describing Riva Ridge as "deer like", is pretty accurate, he's so narrow and with such spindly legs.

  • amazing video!!!

  • What a great video tribute to Riva Ridge and Eddie Sweatt! Thank you for sharing!

  • Wonderful video ! Thank you so much for posting this excellent footage !

  • An absolutely fantastic video...many thanks for sharing this. Riva and his faithful groom, Eddie Sweat both belong in the Hall Of Fame, IMHO.

  • Hi cf, WHERE did you get this video ??

    B

  • Hey, Bon. I lucked into finding it via search the other day on YouTube, and felt compelled to embed it on my channel for more to see the great Riva Ridge in action. I'm hoping that the folks at the official Keeneland channel have more in their archives for us to enjoy. Riva deserves all the exposure he gets. He was a fine champion.

    Take care,
