  • Wow, this is real Formula 1 :D

  • Wow the whistling brakes and the downshifting at the dequetteville hairpin are quite impressive! GIVE US BACK GOOD OLD ADELAIDE!!

  • Now this is what i call a real Formula 1 car. No electronical bulls**t, a real dashboard and a lot of horsepower you have to controll.

  • @jp234ify Best qualifying position 8th during the 1986 season. He amassed a total of 3 world championship points, losing to his team mate Ayrton by points 55-3. Dumfries actually DNQ'd from the Monaco Grand Prix. Dumfries-Senna was without a doubt one of the most lopsided pairings in the history of F1.

  • This it what F1 should be like, not the boring shit of today.

  • man i Miss this track so bad.

  • This still is the best onboard camera footage of a F1 car racing!

and I still have this race on its full lenght in my VHS!!

  • Holy crap. I thought it was just up and down for up and down shifting, had no idea it was the full fledged clutchless [H-I] set up.

  • Great video. Really nice to see how hard they worked the wheel and gears back then.

  • 0:16 there's a damn car on the side of the track,. !!!!!

  • limited to 12,000 rpm

  • At least we'll get turbos engines back for 2013, although they'll be 1.6L inline 4. And while they're expected to produce 800hp or so, they'll be limited to 6000 rpm which is a shame. It's too early to say this, but with 6000 rpm would it be a difference between listening to the sound of a F1 car and a sports hatchback?

  • @SiulF1 Not 6000, rather 12000.

  • @SiulF1 6000 rpm?? you sure?? that is the limit on my honda car...

  • @klepetar No, my mistake. I read an article some time ago and originally that was the plan but now it's known that the limit will be 12000 rpm. However, the new engines will be delayed until 2014, and they're gonna be V6.

  • thats racing! from the good oold times^^

  • lol The Stag hotel gets a mention

  • @tommywm24 my mum said she was at this race at the stag hotel lol. its the only reason im watching this video

  • i love murray's line: "takes us back to the old days". OLD DAYS??? that is what i call old days.

  • 5 people watch nascar and don't like open-wheel!! lol

  • olha a reduzida aos 0:55

rapaaaaiz.. tem q se pilooto memo =D

  • James Hunt and Murray Walker - both legends.

  • Wow.

Manual, H-pattern gear changes (no sequential stuff here!), using heel-toe technique and blipping the throttle to manually match revs on downshifts (no synchromesh, either!). THIS was the real F1, unlike the sterile, automated stuff we see today...

I don't care how much the FIA tries to jazz up F1, but it's best days are behind it.

  • That is simply fantastic. When the car spin Dumfries change gear...the heel and toe...the power...wonderful drive and he was only 11th.

    THIS was F1.

I want turbo back...i want also ground effect back.

  • Bring back this track to F1!

  • Looks like so much fun! Had to really steer these bad boys!

    Now they just point!

  • This is a short throw shifter. Although I knew he downshifted from 3rd to 2nd, but a downshift from 5th to 4th looked the same. Sweet racecar though, and a great sounding 1.5L V6 engine.

  • These guys are the real heroes!!!!

  • Look how fast he is shifting. Amazing.

  • Amazing vid, surprised I didnt see this earlier.

  • check out the flames from the bmw engine....awesome

  • that's I Called a driving. IT IS SUPERB

  • Really like a cleaner steering whell without sooo many buttons and that camera angle, you were able to watch the driver working

  • Great, when Formula1-driving meant working.

  • HAHAHA takes you back to the old days ! :D

  • whats that he keeps doing with his right hand.....thats driving a race car

  • Number One Priority if i were to take charge of F1 would be to bring back manual gearboxes!!!!! I just wish there was a camera in the footwell of the car watching his feet dancing on the pedals aswell!

  • @fraserjess89 - They use manual gear boxes! They just change with flappy paddles instead of a stick.

  • @maidenslayer - oh i know, all i meant was give them a gearstick and a foot operated clutch. flappy paddles are too easy whenever you watch this video

  • @fraserjess89 - Ah, I see.

  • @maidenslayer

No, they do not. The dont have to revmatch when downshifting, that and the clutch are operated via some weird electronics.

  • @FukEmUp145 They can actually apply some engine braking too i'm sure as they use the downshift to force the engine to slow the car.

  • @surfbuckeyesbc

Yeah, of course. But the shifting, clutch operating and revmatching are done via electronics - they just have to pull the trigger ;)

  • yehhhh baby!!!!!!!

  • look everyone a real f1 car!!! these have been extinct for about 20 odd years..... and bring back adelaide!

  • Paddle shifters should GTFO

  • It's weird watching these cars as it seems more dangerous.

Open cockpits along with one handed momentum and the vibration with the helmet and the car.

  • Fuck melbourne! they have enough tourism as it is! have a deal with f1, 1 year adelaide, the next melbourne. C'mon!

  • @AngretLord

yeaa we want adelaide back..not for a year as a australian grand prix..

  • LOL, the steering wheel in this Formula One car actually looks like a steering wheel

  • @creatyve today..they look more like playstation controlers..

  • MsFarQ2 - Murray was actually right, the helmet was dark blue, white and gold, not black white and gold. The gold pit matching the JPS sponsor.

  • look at the boost guage....talk about high psi

  • Man i drive on these streets sometimes during the week and boy do i wish i could see and hear the sound of these cars again one day. There are still remains of some rumble strips here and there which remind me of the good old days!

  • Looking at Dumfries tear around here (I think he did manage to score a point in what was a high-attrition race), it's hard to believe that his teammate Senna was nearly 3 sec/lap faster.

  • 6th to 1st was insane. Wonder if he double clutched?

  • love watching him change gears, todays drivers have it so easy

  • WOW i never saw this track! its awsome why was it scrapped

  • @RaceCockpit Because another Larger city in Australia with more Money to throw at the corrupt F1 boss's thought they could do a better job in Melbourne 'Albert Park' race track...History has shown they sucked.

  • "You can see his helmet with the colours of Scotland" says Murray... Umm, black white and gold aint the colours of Scotland, Murray!

  • Looks blue and white to me... just saying.

  • Damn those turbo cars sounded nice. Living in Adelaide I clearly remember the high pitched sounds of the V6 turbo's from 85-88 and the screaming V8-V10 & V12 cars from 89-95. I lived about 15 minutes away from the track and I can still remember hearing them clearly. I miss that.

  • lol yeah! I live about 20 mins away from Albert Park and you can hear those engines from there too

  • YEAH lotus comeback 2010!!!

  • awesome

  • superbo video

  • WISH i could see a onboard of those Turbo BMW's in qualifying trim!!!!

  • well. im surprised it wasnt sequential gearbox

  • well i'm not. Sequentials didnt come around till 4 years later when Ferrari first used them at the Brazilian GP...

  • oh ok

  • busy...

  • I was so focused on the sound of the car and the sights of the track that I didn't notice that the gearbox was an H-pattern.

  • Have you noticed something? Every onboard that comes from the turbo era is from a Renault engined car...

  • Anyone knows when was the power stering introduced to F1? I´ve been looking for the answer in several places but, can´t find an answer anywhere.

  • no way they did 200 mph on the backstraight

  • lotus are back!

  • The Adelaide end of season race was iconic. Great track, had real character. Melbourne feels a bit sterile by comparison.

  • Now sir. That's driving.

  • Had a chance to drive it just in Grand Prix 2 simulator :) but my opinion is close to kks5522's one. )

  • adelaide is better than melbourne

  • Yeah Adelaide is a great track...a street circuit. the drivers prefered it, so did everyone else

but of course melbourne offered the money

  • amazing cockpit

  • fuck it goes through those gears quick.

  • Bring back the Adelaide Grand Prix!

  • Comment removed

  • wtf???? the there is no sequencual gear?? is manual or what¡¡?¡?

  • 6 speed manual trans on Dumfries' Lotus, 5 speed on Senna's that year. Sequentials didn't show up until '89 on the Ferrari 640 and weren't fully adopted by the whole grid until '94 or '95.

  • waw, thanks man ¡¡

  • Dumfries had an extra gear compared to Senna!?!? Why?

  • Lotus wanted to try out the 6 speed, which was unproven in their cars at the time. Testing the transmission was given to Dumfries, while Senna opted to run the more reliable 5 speed.

  • Wow, you learn something new every day! Thanks!

  • Of course it's a manual... F1 didn't have paddle-shifting back in 1986.

  • yessss.... i know... the guy below me answered my question

  • Ah, I see.. sorry. YouTube doesn't display replies properly for me. :P

  • stop watching porn XD..

  • WUT? 0.o

    XD

  • porn= virus=,,, ehh i dunno... pc on drugs XD

  • the last year turbos were permitted was 1988, for the 89 season cars were normally aspirated

  • Anyone knows years until turbo engines were used in f1?

  • it was in the 80`s, i think all 80 to 89.

  • Renault began Turbos in F1 in 1977, then Brabham and Ferrari joined in early 80s with the BMW Brabham BT52 winning the championship for Piquet in 1983. After that everyone got into Turbos until 1988.

  • i love the sound of the car.....

  • Amazing video. Thank you very much for sharing!

  • The real f1

  • With the $40m budget cap, is now not the time for the historic Lotus team to make a comeback to F1?

  • As much as I would love to, we will never see the Lotus we saw back in the Chapman days... :( That man was just a genius.

  • Now THAT was F1 driving!! F1 drivers today are sissies...

  • the upshifts are fine 1st of all they are turbo cars and the boost they dumped out was high over 1000bhp the boost is shooting the revs up that fast thats why he has to change gear so quick plus because the track is a tight track not a long flowing one like spa they set the gear ratios short to medium hence the fast gear changing.....

  • the upshifts sound so wrong he gets onto the striaght and all of soundend he moves through like 3 gears in 4 seconds

  • IN 1980s in Adelaide where "

1 gear 0-160,170 or 180 ... Becouse where was 1000+ bhp and now traction control

  • These were real F1 cars for real F1 drivers. I really miss the F1 Turbo era..

  • Those pilots were only heroes....with that tecnology...and that super-engine...

  • Hehe, funny hearing them say "takes you back to the old days" back then.

  • it's so easy in the today's f1 cars. i bet no one of the actual drivers would be able to drive a car like this 1986 Lotus with manua gear shift

  • i agree with you

  • Don't be such an asshole. F1 has always been difficult. Top drivers would excell in any kind of car. You should read and watch more about motorsport before saying bullshit.I'm sure you have tested f1 cars lots of times. I get furious when I read crap like yours.

  • I absolutely agree too :-)

  • Timo Glock showed up a lot of legendary drivers this year at the Monterrey classics race this year. Maybe they weren't in race shape but you can bet he was fired up to disprove exactly what you were saying.

  • Any of the actual drivers could drive like then. It is not their fault tecnology has changed so much f1 cars. I agree that kind of driving was real and better, but I still think today drivers are just as good

  • Perhaps, but I think some of them don't have the necesseray skills developed for clutch pedal and heel&toe type of gearchanges. Especially the young ones, they never had to do it, ever. It's not something you can learn just like that. One could say today's drivers are physically in better shape, but technically, driving skills wise, they're lacking some techniques required back then.

  • But i believe the intermediate Formulas use H gear shifters, like Formula Renault 2.0 and formula BMW and etc. I believe all of todays drivers had to pass through those cars...

  • They don't need to clutch when shifting or declutch when shifting down, it's more or less like sequential gearboxes. They definetelly develop left foot braking techniques early on these days. Not to say if someone's talented they can't quickly adapt and learn, but it would probably take some practice and definetelly quite some time to reach Senna's level of skill in that area for example.

  • I believe they do. At least in some of them, like Formula Ford. They need to Heel&Toe, a Brazilian pro Kart driver once told me that, he had tested a Formula Ford...

  • Only Formula ford run a 4 speed H pattern gearbox.

Formula Renualt 2.0, BMW, F3, Formula masters etc all use sequential boxes

  • @hristoitchov They definitely did...most racing series even now use h-pattern manuals.

  • these engines had about 300 bhp more than schumachers 1994 benneton

  • The FIA need to bring the manual gearshift back, by doing so we'll be able to tell who is a good and not-so-good driver.

  • great footage! thank you for sharing it.

  • man, these guys got the real talent. not like many modern racers. Dumfries here has no Traction Control, Paddle shift box, low downforce and just total power with less control, it's a wonder these guys could keep it on the road! this is when F1 drivers had to manage so much. I think this demands more talent.

  • I said that 330 km is not possible on that track..maybe these car can reach the 330 km on the hockenheim or monza but not this track..You can see also michael schumacher's 1994 video..he just reached 300 km..there is also one more thing adelaide is very very slow an narrow a street circuit so teams setup the cars for mostly get much more downforce..top speed not much important here..

  • On qualifying boost, no matter how much downforce they carried, those cars would peak 320-330kph easily. Take off all their wings and they would do 400+.

  • Turbo motors or BHP is not much important ..aerodinamics is everything on corner speeds and top speeds..these cars not compatible with 2004 or 2002 F1 cars with aerodinamics..I readed a article on the F1 racing magazine..in 1985 (I think senna said) one of our target is (lotus team) reach the 345 km..so these cars can reach 340-350 at hockenhaim and monza..not monaco and adelaide..:)

  • Adelaide had the longest straight of any street circuit, and they could have gone onto that straight out of Brewery Bend in something like 4th gear with qualifying tires which gave much more cornering grip. And, also, the end of '86 was the point where power outputs in qualifying had escalated to ridiculous amounts, which meant lightning acceleration and mind-blowing top speeds, even on tracks like Adelaide.

Apparently, a car was actually clocked at 215mph during qualifying for that GP.

  • in the middle of the 80,s gear speed like this. 1.gear 0km-100km 2.gear 100km-140km 3.gear 140km-200km 4.gear 200km-240km 5.gear 240km-270km 6.gear 270+ if your opinion is true 6.gear must be too long to reach 330 km..or gear ratios is different maybe something like that 1.gear 0-130 2.gear 130-180 3.gear 180-230 4.gear 230-270 5.gear 270-310 6.gear 310+ obviosly this ratios dont work.because driver must turn a lot of corners with 1. gear..
  • Different gearboxes and gear ratios were used for qualifying compared to the race. And those massive speeds were recorded in qualifying.

  • Gate Shifter and Clutch, yeah baby!!! :P

  • People, do you know what?

Even the less clever and gifted F1 driver of the '80s would be able to kick present drivers' ass

Today they are so addicted to technologies that they don't even know what the stick gear is and where it was in past cars!

  • What high and mighty position are you of, then?

  • Lightning quick gear changes. These were quality cars. And how close is the wheel to the cockpit?!!! The drivers are sitting up pretty high compared to today.

  • the lotus 98T was a great car , I think jhonny dumfries is a good driver.

  • RADIKAL CAR

  • awesome vids and good feedback nice job,,,,,,miss the adelaide full circuit,,,spew,,

  • I dont think driving an F1 car today is easier at all!

The gear shifting is easier, but overall the cornering speeds, and braking power has incresed so dramatically, that the physical strees on the driver is much higher.

And with the higher cornering speeds, reaction time, and hand-eye coordination skills has to be better to.

Senna was one of the first to take cardiavaskular - and neurological - fittness seriously, wich is part of the reason that he was so succesfull.

  • This means that Senna probably wasent as tired and didnt have to strugle so much in the car, leaving more power left to concentrate on the driving!

Sometimes when chubby Mansell got out of the car he looked like he was about to drop dead, and then Senna behind him just jumping out of the car looking as he could have driven 10 more.

And today with the psysical demands are the most extreme ever, I dont think its easy!

Anti-shake cameras make it look as it is, and thats bery deceptive!

  • Yeah Mansell could barely stand up after the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix. Even though Senna was physically fit, he was also known to be the physically weakest driver in the field. He too, somtimes could barely stand up after races. I cant remember where I read that, but I'll try to find the url so I can send it to you.

  • Well... sometimes it would be the other way around, but in 1992 it happened because of Ayrton overdriving the car. In Imola, Mansell was tired as usual, but Senna suffered from heat exhaustion and spent about 20 minutes slumped in the car before recovering.

  • Hey 4forty4 did you see Ayrton Senna in Monaco? He´s only the fucking best!! a racer fron another galaxy... He defeat the master Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell... Nobody can´t with Ayrton Senna DaSilva, the genious...The best of the best!!!

  • Thats real driving right there

  • Thanks for all the feed back.F1 FANS ARE SO HELPFUL.

HERES TO ALL RACERS AND FANS -CHEERS!.

  • Can any body tell me on my messages -who drove the jps car in the late 70's-early80's and wore a simpson rx1 helmet [white helmet].Regards jacko.

  • Elio de Angelis wore a white helmet, he raced for Lotus from i think 1980 to 1985. Gunnar Neilsson might have to, he won the 1987 Belgium gp for Lotus. Other than that, i dont think any other Lotus drivers wore a white helmet.

  • Thanks f1diva,I will look these racers up.

Thanks again for your time and help.

    Regards jacko.

  • 1977 belgium gp sorry

  • Hector Rebaque may have also used a white helmet, he raced a private Lotus in 79.

  • Thanks ,i will try some research on those racers.I have an old simpson helmet and would like to copy [replicate ].I have seen a picture on the web somewhere but can not find it at the moment.Thank you for your information.

    Regards jacko.

  • thanks message above.

    regards jacko!

  • Hi jackshit. Only Elio wore the famous star wars model 30 simpson helmet. He dropped it for the new model 32, which didn't have the pointy notch between the eyes, it had a regular opening like a bell xfm, but still had the star wars snout, he wore that until 1984. If you look at Jean Alesi, he had the same helmet, emulating Elio's helmet, Alesi was a great fan of Elio's, hope this helped.

  • Your a diamond lazerpod66.I will look up ELIO.

Thank you for your knowledge and reply.

    Regards Jacko!

  • No problem jacki. Elio also wore the model 30 at Shadow in 1979, the year the model 30 was introduced. Then Elio dropped the Simpson in favor of the Bell for 1985 and 1986.

  • ayerton senna drove jps lotus in 80s didnt he? hope i haven't just made a fool o me'sel

  • Yes he did. 1985 and 1986 (and 1987, but that was the Camel-branded 99T). This is an onboard lap from his 1986 teammate.

  • I love this video... there's a vid of Senna driving an NSX around Suzuka with pedal cam. Inspirational stuff.

  • yes it was the turbo era. fast cars

  • Real drivers not just driving but going to work. What a great time in F1!

  • Look at the drop from la source to eau rouge at Spa and then the even steeper climb through radillon. As for lack of run off, look at Monaco. I think the real obstacle is the fact that Melbourne pays the exploitative fees for hosting f1 whereas Bathurst doesn't need to because it already has a significant racing pedigree without f1.

  • Can't argue with that, Bathurst would be one of the best races on the F1 calender. The cars would be able to cope because they handle Monaco's changing gradient easily. Formula Fords go around there easily. One problem tho would be run off, not being a current F1 venue, Bathurst would have to change a few thing on the mountain and also in the pit area to be accepted as an F1 venue in this day and age. We can only dream that we'd see a race there someday....

  • Sadly it prob won't happen. It would make a great race track tho as the track widens after it comes down the mountain. In my view the most panoramic track in the world.

  • now thats F1.Shifting and having to take your hand off the wheel.real driving

  • lol. im not old enough to remember those days. Was this the turbo era fo f1 ? Good driving though.

  • adelaide could be easily changed to it's origional layout i think it would be still a great venue for the fans,I hear what your saying about bathurst but unfortuantly it doesn't meet safty.phillip island would be awsome though, the drivers would think so
