The very sight of that guitar is discouraging to all six string players trying to learn this song. It's like trying to read a poem written in a language with characters and sounds that don't even exist within your own! Sounds good though. <3 Jarz
@psychopathtoine It's the same reasoning behind why basses are so much longer than guitars, and grand pianos have longer bass strings.
When you begin adding more strings to the guitar, it would benefit significantly from a longer length on the bass side. It improves tone and also string tension (strings are tight without having to use such heavy gauges, which has a negative impact on tone).
@psychopathtoine in case you didnt know, straight frets actually prevent the guitar from obtaining a truly perfect tuning, tone and sustain, correctly fanned frets allow the guitar to obtain a perfect tuning stability, give a much better tone and develop a remarkable amount of sustain
@JHKHSVJSSRV it's most likely 6 closed-minded guitarists that can't handle anything more than 6 strings, and thusly hate extended range guitars. They're everywhere.
Ibanez makes a 7 string for $499, Schecter makes an eight for $599. Agile guitars also has very affordable (and pretty damn good quality) 7's and 8's, check out RondoMusic (doht) com.
@JHKHSVJSSRV Dude, I have such bad news for you then. You can't even order blackmachine guitars anymore. It says on Doug's website that he's doing a limited run of exotic wood instruments and they'll 'likely by the last guitars the [he] builds himself by hand'. I don't know if this means he's closing or expanding into a full-production brand (which would be awesome). The message on his website is rather cryptic, but it seems as if he's cancelled the orders on his waiting list.
Nolly, that guitar is so fucking sleek and sexy. I'm sure there are lots of people on SSO waiting for you to sell it... but if you ever decide to offload it, it's okay if you message me first.
i play a 7 string and the extra low string is now a part of the guitar for me, everything makes a hole lot more sense, theres more symmetry and logic to the guitar now (my point of view) though i dont think i'll ever get to an 8.. all you 6 stringers out there try it!
brilliant stuff - i can't play that on a normal guitar let alone on some fucked up string-expanded and fret-mutilated one :P (thats a compliment to the guitar not an insult :D)
@phlamboniousejones It decreases tension on the higher strings (e, B, etc.) which are naturally of higher tension compared to the lower ones as they're smaller and tuned higher, while it does the opposite for the lower strings, it allows them to be tighter and have a more uniform tension across all the strings as opposed to just extending the scale of the entire instrument.
@Nollythegreat god damn, thats a sweet ass guitar, iv never even seen 1 o them before! i did a periphary cover the other day, iv been makin vinyls for my friends lately cz i can get the stuff for free in all kinds o colours and im kind of an artist..gimme a shout of u guys want anything done nd check out the cover if u wana check the quality, myt be a handy way of advertising RSF im you'r cover vids, just a thought...
@Bempley the fanned frets make it so the higher up or closer to the bridge you move the hand the more natural the angle your fingers are at are. When most guitarists move their hands past the 12th fret they either have to reposition themselves or the guitar so that they dont feel like they are hurting their wrists....fanned frets makes it feel natural.
@lectwar there are fanned frets just because scale length grows from higher E to lower F# strings. consult wikipedia on "Neck (music)" for the proportions.
@dvdroshin They aren't the worst bands ever, I can name a couple bands a helluva a lot worse. But I do agree that too many people like music that isn't amazing
some huge bitches here. man, more strings is more possibility. that is all, i dont know if you want to play with bassist, or something, but is not about this in deep, is about more range, more notes, and it is more possibility for your creations. the problem is that instruments are not massive, is a bit tricky to get the strings and all

If you like 7+ strings, great, continue to post on Seven-String, release your albums no one cares about and be done with it. If you genuinely prefer 7 strings great for you, just dont make jackass remarks about it. No one really cares what you use (except for hardcore metal fans), so why even other make an argument out of it? If your music is so poor you have to rely on the fact that you use more than 6 strings to increase popularity, then why even bother?
Just because it has 7+ strings doesn't make it suck. The reasons behind the strings is you no longer need a bassist to bring in the low end rhythm or harmony, the singer has deep voice that would need really high pitched guitars to be in the same key, and it has more range so you can come up with more riffs, play keyboard parts, etc. Personally, I like both 6 and 7 string music. Ever hear Trivium's Shogun? Imagine the vocals and instruments being 2.5 steps higher. They couldn't do it.
You obviously aren't into modern metal then. Along with Bullet for My Valentine, Trivium is one of the leading modern metal bands. Revolver magazine had both of those bands on the cover in 2008 when they released they're new albums saying that they would be the top competitors for metal album of the year.
Trivium and Bullet aren't leaders of modern metal... They're not even proper metal. They're metalcore (which has significantly different structuring and riffing styles, and also vocal styles). Just that these money hungry magazines have no idea what metal even is. And of course, they wouldn't name a real metal band as a competitor because it's not where the money is - even if they did know what real metal is.
Also, Ibanezdude, it's not about not needing a bassist. You do still need a bassist. The low strings may give you the lower notes of a bass (although not of a bass with the relative lower strings), but it doesn't give you the fat tone of a bass. A lower tuned guitar will never compensate for the low end of a bass. They both have their own unique qualities. I love my 7 string, but I love my 5string bass just as much ^^
I'm not saying it totally eliminates the need for a bassist, but I have seen small time bands that just use 8 strings and no bassist so it does help. Second, I'm not saying that Trivium or Bullet are leaders. He said that 7 string had no real mainstream influence so I gave him a mainstream example. I'm not a huge fan of either. They have some good songs, but I like Dream Theater and Sonata Arctica way more.
The whole reason low tunings are incorporated in metal is because guitarists wanted a darker sound out of their guitars. Not to extend their range. Hence why they tuned down. The Swedish Death metal scene tuned B-B on their 6s, and the American band Demilich even tuned as low as A-A.
@FotogLord44 which is why a 7 string extends your range. It has a low b which you can drop to an a and you now have extremely low one finger power chords on strings that aren't sloppy as hell.

A guitar has the range that it has. An instrument is defined by its essence. Players should play what they like.
I find the 7+ string crowd to be a small group that represents themselves well online, but that is all. They mainly play either boring chugging ala Meshuggah, or tasteless metalcore/indie that no one really cares about.
Come on, that's not so fair FotogLord44. There is some nice 7string music out there. Dream Theater do it nicely (Glass Prison for example). I know there's some death metal to do it too, but I can't recall who in particular right now. But we're not all chugging indiecore buggers :P
I've never understood the deal with 8 strings... or 10 string bass guitars. I mean, aside from the extended-range, why? I'd say 99% of the people that play 8-strings here on YouTube only play shitty Meshuggah covers; they play no original pieces!
@MrSquitwet I half agree. I didn't write anything of much worth during my temporary ownership of this guitar, and I have no plans to buy an 8-string of my own.
However, the extra string doesn't necessarily have to be used at its lowest extent the whole time - it can be very handy to be able to descend an octave lower than normal without moving position.
Those who have taken the time to explore the instrument have certainly produced some unique and fantastic music.
@Nollythegreat I am planning to get an eight string guitar and tune it to GDGCFADG, so I have that extra low end and the higher G. Should be interesting.
@MrSquitwet it doesnt have to be used to create unique music it can be used for convenience like 7 strings, besides 8 strings arent that common so ppl that listen to meshuggah ro other band that is using 8 strings will be buying those guitar and playing songs that they like theres nothing wrong with it...
Listen to Scale the Summit, then listen to Animals As Leaders. The first band uses one eight string guitar, one seven string guitar, then a six string bass guitar. Animals As Leaders I think uses two eight string guitars (no bassist for live performances).
Scale the Summit uses an extra high-string, not a low F# (or whatever they tune to now) like everyone on YouTube. Matter of fact, I haven't seen ANYONE ever utilize that high string like Chris Letchford.
Ah, okay, gotcha. I didn't really know what he used, only that he played an eight string. I play bass, so I don't really study what guitar players are using, I just enjoy the sounds. Hahaha. :P
@MrSquitwet 99% of the people that play 6 strings play Led Zeppelin covers. What's your point? Besides, "aside from the extended range"... really? Did you really ask that question?
@MrSquitwet mechanics only use a few tools at a time, but a good one has all the possible tools ready in case...that is what the 8 strings are about, range. And 99% of youtubers are only 10% of musicians who own an 8 string.

@MrSquitwet
Listen to Scale the Summit, then listen to Animals As Leaders. The first band uses one eight string guitar, one seven string guitar, then a six string bass guitar. Animals As Leaders I think uses two eight string guitars (no bassist for live performances).

@Prof3ssrBrando

Besides, "aside from the extended range"... really? Did you really ask that question?
austinyun 1 year ago
@MrSquitwet i actually play the 7 strings of my guitar for complex chords , and solos ... and as an extended range guitar .
but yeah , to play djent , a baritone would be far sufficient ...

@MrSquitwet My friend, you haven't heard Chimp Spanner or Animals as Leaders have you?

@MrSquitwet I don't know if you have heard Animals As Leaders, but he makes really good use of 8-strings if you feel like checking it out.

@MrSquitwet mechanics only use a few tools at a time, but a good one has all the possible tools ready in case...that is what the 8 strings are about, range. And 99% of youtubers are only 10% of musicians who own an 8 string.

@MrSquitwet Tosin Abasi. That's why 8 string guitars are so amazing.

@cileth F8* its the one with the sloped features, on a B8 everythign is straight and due to that the B8 has a wider fretboard.
