Skynyrd's greatest recording.Tuesday's gone second. What's that other one???????????Concrete and something surrounded me?????Oh yeah...I'm coming home third!
For the record: It's LOEW and BLACK, not Bayou. At 51 I have probably listened to Second Helping a few thousand times. Tickets to the Street Survivors show at the Bayfront Center in St. Pete Fla sold out before I could scrape together the cash to get one. One of my greatest disappointments is never having seen them live.
this song is actually about Shorty Medlock a drinking' Buddy of Donnie and Ronnie Granddad. Ricky Medlock's Granddaddy No kidding I actually spoke to Donnie van Zant
on Rock line back in the Tribute tour days I even won a $100.00 dollar bet on this answer.
Love this song...I am only 35 yrs. young now...lol but, my brother used to sing and play this for me when we were growing up! Loveing every minute of it...This songs awsome!!!
This song is the major reason why I refused to look away when I encountered the homeless in Chicago. I know, sometimes they can be a bit difficult to handle, and can be quite awkward and inconvenient, but I try to remember someone's son or daughter is in there. That this person has, or had potential at some point, and they're just as deserving as dignity and address as anyone else. In fact, lacking that dignity is probably a fraction of the reason their situation persists.
@TheBSG ypu shpuld check up on austin texas they have a homeless man whos became a celebrity but still poor as all hell but people would buy him drinks at bars and stuff no one knows how he got this kind of treatment but he is kind of living every homelessmans dream besides you know having a house
Am I the only one that cries with uncompromising abandon when they hear this song? The story is so lonely, but at the same time it's sweet that a child could love and appreciate a homeless black man in a time of racial tensions.
Grew up less than 50 miles of vocalists Steve and Cassie Gaines. They were quite the local kids done good story. It was a sad loss all the way around. "I wish you was here so everyone would know. People all say you were useless but them people all were fools. Cause Curtis you're the finest picker to ever play the blues."!!!
my dad plays guitar and one of our favorite things to do is sing this song together while he plays, thanks for posting this it brings back great memories
tHIS SONG REMINDS ME OF WHEN ME AND COUSIN USE TO COLLECT RAILROAD SPIKES FROM THE TRAIN TRACKS TO SELL AT THE JUNK YARD FOR SCRAPS UNTIL OUR GRANDPA WOOPED OUR ASS FOR STEALING FROM THE RAILROAD ! lol THEN WE COLLECTED COKE BOTTELS FOR MONEY TO BUY CANDY AND COKES . THIS WAS 1974 AND WE WERE 7OR 8 lol
i bought this on vinyl when i was was 10 and i have the record in my hand and it clearly states it is spelled curtis lowe you fuckin morons. where do you get your info? i am now 43 fyi
Loew is a Jewish name. Thats VanZant's subtle sense of humor at work. Allen Collins and Gary Rossington were in the same class at Lake Shore Junior High as Curtis Lowe (and me). I bet they knew him. He is now deceased. Don't know when he died.
i'm 18 but thoes where the days man! I wish good feeling would in every generation like this! now days is lame i tell you LAME.. People want good feelings not toture!
there was a black man that owned a country store off of lakeshore rd near ronnies house that played music on a guitar (maybe a slide) that all the people including ronnie and the guys visited-according to legend the song was a composit of this man and allot of delta blues players like son house and bob j etc- the song was more or less a tribute to the delta blues players-god bless all of em
I have to correct you ,if you don't mind. You said Skynyrd was the greatest southern rock bands and I just want to say that in my humble opinion, they were the greatest Band of all time. And that is coming from me...an old Metal Head from way back. Nazareth ,Black Sabbath right up there too. LOL Have a good one bro.
I wish I could have seen them...and I agree that they were great. The original members of Skynyrd and John Fogerty are 2 of my favorites then and now :)
DeeJune13......I saw them twice. Once at The Fox Theatre in Atlanta in 1976 and again at The Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, GA. in 77 shortly before the crash. These are among my most treasured teenage memories. I still have the ticket stubs!
thank you for posting. This is a beautiful song. I wish so much that this band could ...well, what do I say here, I wish that they had never had that plane crash...I just wonder what they could have done.
Creamy guitar....I don't know what's in their copyrighted song books. Record companies can put what they want to in those things for fear of offending someone. But the line definitely reads, "He lived a lifetime a-playin the black man's blues..."
If you can find an original copy of the "Second Helping" album......not the re-released CD....you will find it there.
I can remember my first night in an old country town in Japan. Lonely and trying desperately to find some kind of music on the radio. Finally found an English speaking music station and fell asleep. Got woken up at about 2:30 am to this tune. One of my favorites, I couldn't be farther away from home and Skynyrd gave me a little peace of mind. Then, I knew I would be ok. Ronny said, "son, just stick it out and it would be worth it." I did, was there for the next 6 years.

On the day ol' Curtis died, nobody came to pray
Ol' preacher said some words,
and they chucked him the clay.....
He lived a lifetime playing the black man's blues
And on the day he lost his life, that's all he had to lose
My all-time fav Skynyrd song
