To which interviews, specifically, do you refer? 181erob, I think by now that we may assume Berus7777 does not understand the difference between fact and opinion. Lendl's impact far outweighs that of McEnroe or Connors, he is, simply put, the father of modern tennis . . .
Ivan Lendl - WORST thing ever to happen to men's tennis. Seriously one of the all time worst professional athletes in any sport in terms of his impact on the overall sport. And, while I think Sampras is probably a nice guy, he wasn't much better for the game, either.
Well put absolutebore, although I would disagree with your assessment of him as a "great player". Cheats, and he was one, don't get that label. Connors was not deserving of the title "Champion" . . .

I was originally responding to spaceyvet319, who said something about connors not being worthy of serious consideration as one of the greats. certainly, 8 majors and 268 accumulated weeks at number 1 is nothing to sneeze at.
@gatorcc70 actually Connors was all mouth and possibly the worst cheat in the history of the sport. He intimidated officials and got away with it with a smile. Rubbed out ball marks on clay courts, played the fool to waste time and upset his opponent. Connors apparently had very few friends on the tour. A great player though!
Connors went right in his face. Mcenroe hated Connors to begin with because the NY crowd backed Connors in Mcenroes own back yard. Becker also had enough of Mcenroe once, and went at him. In both cases Mcenroe ran. Mcenroe was an unmanly guy imo.
After my last comment i feel i was a little harsh on Connors, after all he is one of the greatest! It's just that Mcenroe seems to cop all the flack and i even witnessed as a ballboy, how drunk idiots and amateur umpiring got Mcenroe into trouble. Mcenroe got baited when all he was doing was asking the umpire to control the guy making noise in the box behind the court. The crowd were bored as John was winning easily and the officials were out of their depth. Yes Connors was a little devious!
Connors barely played Davis Cup for 2 reasons, 1st he
was more interested in making money playing exhibition matches. 2 because he couldn't handle sharing the limelight with Mac. Mac naturally drew more attention and Connors couldn't handle being the no 2. Mac carried the Davis Cup, while Borg and Connors were playing exhibitions for $.

I'm taking any Connors vs Mc Enroe over any single Federer vs Nadal any single day and night of the year by a super massive margin.
The first two were real entertainers and would do anything to please any crowd in the world with drama and excitement.
The last two , while obviously talented and gifted, are just unexpressive, boring and bland to watch, two machines progammed to play for hours without connecting to the mass like real legends of the sports did.

Why do you people want to compare Connors to Mc Enroe ?
They were both geniuses of the game and vastly superior to all the Federer and Nadal of nowadays.
I remind this altercation, Big Mac was doing his crybaby and Jimbo had enough of it and threathened him to kick his ass for real if he would not stop crying out loud.
The first set was closed but Mc totally destroyed jimbo on the next two ones (7-5 6-1 6-2).

Yeah that's so dumb YOU are the one claiming the roid freak known as Nadal would "crush" Big Mac IMO.
Mc Enroe was destroying Lendl more than he was losing, watch the win-loss column between them , Big Mac exploded Lendl forever in the final of The US Open 84.
Both Connors and Mc were vastly SUPERIOR to the roid freaks like Nadal and Federer, they had both the talent AND the natural charisma and ability to connect with any crowd in the world.

yes as i said we can't compare players of different era, but it's a little different for Big Mac : he already didn't have the technique to handle modern tennis made of powerful strokes (Lendl heading).
Mostly bescause of his grip (the same for all his strokes ! The continental grip best suited for volleys)
so we can assume that would be the same nowadays vs nadal or fed
Popularity is no value, just a shallow point of view. Lendl is from Eastern Europe, obviously he was another sort of bloke, kind of gloomy and very determined, a go-getter type. Lendl won 8 majors (Mac 7) and more tournaments than Mac. The latter was the greater talent but he messed it up after 84. He struggled almost ten more years and hardly won anything (maybe 12 out of his 77).
wrong. if you give mac the equipment these guys have today or give the guys today his equipment 25 years ago i like mac's chances. he has the fastest hands and best touch of any player to ever play. fed and nadal are much like tiger woods in that they are great but the competition was better when mac was in his prime. they wouldn't have dominated the game 20 years ago.
Mac owned lendl until 1985 when mac was drinking and snorting coke and didn't care about tennis anymore. in fact, mac never won a major after 1984. it's too easy to say serve and volley wouldn't work today because no one does it so how do we know? tennis was a MUCH more enjoyable game to watch 20 years ago due to the contrasting styles.
hem, if "no one does it", maybe it became very difficult ? (slower surfaces, easier returns, etc...)
i also regret the end of the server-volleyer attackers but now it's the reign of great all-court players and it's still enjoyable to watch, really.
and of course there's still contrasting styles, for exemple look at the 3 frenchies of the moment : tsonga, simon and monfils : their style is very diifferent each other
Mac had le last laugh at that match, I recall that well when he categorically slaughtered Connors after the exchange at the net. I believe that it was Connors who had the ego thing overall.
That's stupid comment!! Wealth does not produce talent!! If he did not get wealth from his family as least he did get good genes and nutrition ---- considering his great physique and fitness!! He retired A LOT later than most!!
Wealth does not produce talent, but it does allow a person with talent to direct all their energy towards improving. A poor person with talent could just as well dig ditches for a living and no one would know!
Yes agree!! I read about these amassing champions. Connors play intensive physical tennis like Nadal does --Rafael is a modern version of Borg! I consider these two the closest to Rafael Nadal's tennis style.
i remmeber this match. McEnroe was winning very easy so at this moment John throw a defensive lob a little bit wide in the middle of court. Jimmy smashed that ball and won the point easy and then Mc questioned the call to umpire. Jimmy responded in that way because Jhon was winning and especifically this point was imposible for Johny Mac
What an insult to his own son!! HOw can Connors insult McEnroe by comparing him to his own son?? Maybe he treats him the way he treats McEnroe on the court here... like a jerk!
i watched jonny mac give a ball kid a hard time at a senior event in e. columbus. he really was a jerk on the tennis court. one thing i learned about jonny mac is not to get him mad, because he would play at least 3 times better than before.
John McEnroe had been discussing a ref decision, and Connors went to McEnroe and said "Listen, i'm fed up with your behaving like a kid, you really have the mental age of my son, do you understand, yes?"
Johnny Mac didn't come from a "High Class" background. He was born at a U.S. Military Base in West Germany. His Dad was a Military guy, who later became a Lawyer(He attended law school at night while working days as a Advertisement Agent), his Mother was a Housewife! One of his Grandpa's was a Longshoreman, the other was a Bartender! None of that Qualifys as a "High Class" Background. Second thing is, FATHERLESS Jimmy NEVER lived in the HOOD. He grew up in a working class neighborhood.
I remember watching this match. Connors was kinda pissed that Mcenroe was questioing a call, even though he was winning so easily. Mcenroe owns connors
I meant on the court. You can't deny that McEnroe has a reputation for being a hot head. So why the fuck would you call me a jerk? You know it's really annoying that ppl on youtube get so fucking caught up in shit that they feel the need to insult others who leave comments.
Don't know my stuff? I am not sure what you mean by that as I never claimed to be an obscure McEnroe quote expert. Also, in all due respect, you don't seem to pay attention as that has already been clarified in a subsequent response. Doesn't matter, it's just youtube.
ah so you meant your question as a joke. I get it. I still stand by my earlier statements, peeps on youtube tend to take things too seriously. That said...McEnroe is the f***ing MAN! Isn't he doing pepcid commercials now? ANSWER THE QUESTION!! (classic mac).
Have you ever been to a tennis match. You hear stuff the networks blank out. I saw Mac playing in Toronto in 1982. He shouted at a ball girl and said something to the effect of "Are you so f*cking stupid you can't give me the ball" and similar crudities to what were basically children. So you judge about the jerk issue.
WHAT THE FUCK DID HE JUST SAY? HEHEHE

Ok, Connors was like 33 then, past his prime ok?
having said that, he fucking made the semis at 39, so maybe my argument is redundant...
spasman 2 years ago
Umm, so are you MAKING my point are disproving it? =) And JM is still playing successfully today.

Actually, the last time they played in an ATP tourney was in Tuolouse, France, and it was in the finals. Connors won easily.

Oh, and the year was 1989.

@Schrittwieser - Maybe...maybe not...Connors was wimp...in a fight he'd probably not last a minute!

i dont know why this got thumbs down. Even if you love connors or mcenroe, you can't deny, they are both kinda jerks. But they do have talent.

how can you call mcenroe a jerk? answer the QUESTION, jerk!!
turdferguson2 3 years ago
I meant on the court. You can't deny that McEnroe has a reputation for being a hot head. So why the fuck would you call me a jerk? You know it's really annoying that ppl on youtube get so fucking caught up in shit that they feel the need to insult others who leave comments.
yougosquishnow 3 years ago 3
He was quoting Mcenroe saying "answer the question, jerk".
You don't seem to know your stuff, in all due respect.
SoooBlue 3 years ago
Don't know my stuff? I am not sure what you mean by that as I never claimed to be an obscure McEnroe quote expert. Also, in all due respect, you don't seem to pay attention as that has already been clarified in a subsequent response. Doesn't matter, it's just youtube.
yougosquishnow 3 years ago
ah so you meant your question as a joke. I get it. I still stand by my earlier statements, peeps on youtube tend to take things too seriously. That said...McEnroe is the f***ing MAN! Isn't he doing pepcid commercials now? ANSWER THE QUESTION!! (classic mac).
yougosquishnow 3 years ago
Have you ever been to a tennis match. You hear stuff the networks blank out. I saw Mac playing in Toronto in 1982. He shouted at a ball girl and said something to the effect of "Are you so f*cking stupid you can't give me the ball" and similar crudities to what were basically children. So you judge about the jerk issue.

Classic McEnroe-Connors. They really didn't like each other
