idk i get it and all, but why the career music therapist? why not just give the patients the chance to listen to their favorite music on youtube or whatever. All music affects people differently and someones personal interests may be best.
and my cancer...we can talk about all the things that weve both gone through having cancer...yeah lets just think about sex rather than anything that doesnt matter.../ :
Google "neuroscience" and "music" is you want to learn about studies related to "the effects of sound on the human brain". Patel is a good place to start. In addition, the release of various substances such as endorphins reduces pain and as a result the need for pain medication. It is not simply a placebo, as various processes occur within the brain and effect the body's response to pain.
BigHashTouraj....one of the few people in the world that can bash a therapy that brightens a dying childs day, or gives the terminally ill a momentary sense of peace. Great job buddy, nice to see the negative side of Darwin's theory is still in effect.
@BigHashTouraj Darling, I work with deaf students and they love music! They feel the vibrations. Use google scholar and look up "music therapy" "deaf". Thanks!
Please do a search on google scholar for music therapy. Talk to people who have experience music therapy. Then after evidence make a decision. As I said before, ignorance does not constitute omniscience of a subject.
I just finished my degree in Canada. Music Therapy is so much more than elevating moods. We are trained in psychology, music, medicine, and counseling to name a few. Also, the in-depth self work we do is quite thorough. Above that we are intuitive, kind, compassionate and empathetic souls who wish to heal. Maybe check out the CAMT or AAMT websites.
@BigHashTouraj Music therapy research has been shown to reduce the need for exuberant amounts of pain medication and speed the healing process. Using music therapy before and after surgery also lesson stress, thereby quickening the healing process. This is particularly helpful with children in a hospital .
@noey543 research by who? if so. you just need an ipod with some mellow music and not some stranger playing the guitar for you. after all. it's a business
You seem to confuse therapy with medicine. Therapy doesn't cure, it helps the ill cope, which has been proven to positively effect the outcome of the patient. It's not meant to help everyone, just like psychotherapy isn't meant for everyone, and Lithium isn't for everyone. And if I wanted easy money I would become a LPN, something that can take only 1 1/2 years, rather than study my ass off in a music department for 4 years, while continuously improving my skills as a musician.
As will a doctor, as will a priest (funerals, weddings), as will a psychotherapist. as will a psychiatrist.], etc etc. People have to eat. Whats wrong with getting paid?

I don't disagree with the fact that music can be therapeutic, I just have a hard time believing that you need a "Degree" in it.....if i feel down all i need to do is pop in my favorite artist and let them take me away.....and it won't cost me a dime.
@BigHashTouraj hahah i know....who would've thought they'd be so touchy towards criticism....they can give me a million thumbs down....it won't change reality....Education > Therapy......no debate....end of story.
Therapy is a waste of money.....take the time to teach someone something, so that they can produce music on their own accord.
@guyincognito84 wanna a down low ? in my chem. class there is this kid that is majoring on music therapy. idk if i should tell him that it's one of the top 10 worst colleges degrees
@BigHashTouraj Tell that student that they should go for either a music degree or a psychology degree and not waste their life with a music therapy degree. As a music therapist you're neither here nor there....you're not a musician nor are you a psychologist.
@guyincognito84 Actually you're both! That's my take on that! I am about more than half done with my BMT degree now and that's how I see it. I'm sorry that you don't see it as either.
@drummerlead yeah cuz its new.there aren't any many jobs available. btw sigmund freud was the father of psychology but he was also doctor. (where he got his money for psychology research)
@guyincognito84 As a music educator and professor of music education, I feel compelled to say that you are missing the point. Music therapy has much empirical data that it does, in fact, function in myriad settings. Music education is valuable in many settings, but is not necessarily appropriate in all settings. I would hope that a person who professes to value music education would be more open-minded to the power of music in various settings.
@williamslin24 I guess I can make my stance more clear. I don't have faith in any therapeutic fields as a science. Music Therary, Psychotherapy, Aromatherapy, etc..
I don't have doubts that music is thereputic and that therapy as a state of mind exists, but it's too subjective to be quantified.
The idea that you should have a degree in the field seems funny to me.
@guyincognito84 While there are some difficulties in doing research (quantifying emotions for example), there has been and continues to be much quantified research.
@guyincognito84 In addition, we must consider the complexities of the human body. Without an education that teaches neuroscience and psychology as it relates to music, how would we know how to treat properly?
Yes I play the violin and the piano and only a few chords on the guitar.
Once again, just to be clear, music is therapeutic by nature, so to create a dicipline from it seems rather pointless, also, even if they can use music for therapeutic effects, I hardly see how it's a science. If I feel down, I listen to my favourite tune or play a song....don't need a "certified therapist" to do it for me haha...I can do that cause I've been trained in music.
@guyincognito84 You're right, music is naturally therapeutic. However, the method you are describing is not music therapy in a clinical sense. Ignorance on a subject does not constitute omniscience.
Do you know how music works within the brain? Do you know how the connection works between hearing the beat of music and using motor planning to play that rhythm? That is just a small part of the neuroscience of music.
@noey543 like you said, a small part of neuroscience. ok how about this one. what if you are deaf? the whole field goes to the shitter as an option. btw i bet u r doing for the money and bcause its easy
@BigHashTouraj As I CLEARLY stated, my example is just a small part of how complex the neurology of music is. I could give more examples, but the research is too vast. So that is just one small example.
In addition, the majority of those completely deaf is low, most are considered hearing impaired. Even so, they may be more attuned to the sensations of music. This will be my final comment, as your ignorance is overwhelming. Google "MUSIC THERAPY AND THE BENEFITS TO DEAF CHILDREN". Thank you!
@noey543 what with fucking people nowdays saying ignorant for anything they dont agree with. like you said MUSIC NOT THE PEOPLE PLAYING IT. whatever idiot. i guess we all have to scam some people for money sometimes. keep it up
I never claimed to be omniscient....I do know how music works in the brain, clearly not to the extent that a neuroscientist would, but then again I don't have to, there is such a thing as knowing "enough"....for instance, I know enough about Aerospace to know that space travel is possible and that it's not a hoax....not the best example but I think it gets my point across.
Knowing which regions of the brain light up to what rhythmic patters and pitch discrimination and so on and so forth is nothing but a collection of facts which at the end of the day tells us nothing about the subjective experience.
So I could give you all the data taken from a person who has seen the color red, but you still wouldn't know what it's like to experience the color red do you see my point?....therapy is a very subjective experience and although aspects of it can be quantified it can never be a hard science since the effect is so subjective.
Because God forbid we actually use music to benefit people who are dying/sick/stricken with grief, yeah that sounds just like the exploitation of an art form to me.
I used "God forbid" sarcastically, I agree that using Music Therapy if a wonderful thing, along with a myriad of other types of therapy. It has nothing to do with God or the Bible, it's just a saying.
idk i get it and all, but why the career music therapist? why not just give the patients the chance to listen to their favorite music on youtube or whatever. All music affects people differently and someones personal interests may be best.

Also, keep in mind for cancer patients
doing "Music Drum Circles" where
participants co create and co participate
