The Christian music community was always chilly to Kevin Max. He admitted to pre-marital sex back when the CCM community was squeaky-clean and completely isolated. He was always blamed for the breakup of dc Talk, which, for all practical purposes, SAVED Christian music. I remember going to a sold-out dc Talk show in the same auditorium that Blink 182 couldn't sell out at the height of their popularity.

@JesusFreak77753 you are right, his voice is rare. I like listening to artist who have a uniqueness not only to their voice but to their music. I find that a lot of artist today sound so much a like in what they sing and how they sound; Kevin is most definitely in a category all his own. He truly is an angel of God, whom has truly blessed him with something beautiful and special.

I've always loved DC TALK and Kevin was always my fave! I wanted to marry him lol.. but his solo project is my fave.. he is a real poet and I like his style.. his music his lyrics his video.. his voice is amazing! there is only one other person who sounds similiar and thats bryan duncan.. its amazing! they have very unique voices! i luv u kevin!!
I have not heard this song in years, since my mothers church freak phase. Don't know why, but it's been stuck in my as of late.. It's fairly interesting, although this video seems incredibly cheesy at times. Still like the song.. It's JUST bordering pop, but not quite over the threshold.
Concerning the video, I think this is how he perceives himself, soul searching, conflicted, everything from his hair to the clothing choices are all part of his ideal image of himself. I think it confuses his audience because this image isn't one of someone filled with the joy and peace of Christ, it's a bit self centered perhaps...even so, I've always listened to DC talk when feeling melancholy or distant from God. Sin makes us feel this way, "just between you and me" is a good follow up song.

You know it would be just fantastic if CCM wrapped up shop and disappeared tomorrow. Music is music, period. Communication cannot be broken down on lines of faith. I know, I grew up watching that very phenomenon fail daily. Appreciate the artists brave enough to sing their faith to those outside that faith without apology. He is an artist who happens to be a Christian. Stop validating your "in the world but not of it" mentality vicariously through these artists, it impairs you.
I just love this music video. Kevin Max has such a unique and distinguishable voice & he's so eccentric. He was my favourite member of DC Talk. By the way, he looks beautiful in his wings... Haha!

I never feel depressed or 'dark' , even when I read the hard times that people went through in the Bible. Dark feelings do not come from God. I feel like people get way into the dark and moody parts of music sometimes, and that's when it's wrong if you are claiming to be associated with Jesus. Anytime you read about darkness in the Bible, it is always associated with satan or evil men.
The reason I don't care for Kevin is that I feel very 'dark' when I see his interviews and music videos. I feel like when you love Jesus, there is happiness, peace, and joy. I do not recognize anything like that in Kevin. When you truly love Jesus, those things can not hide, they pour out of your life. There is no middle road, you are either hot, or cold. If music makes you feel depressed that is supposed to be 'Christian'.. then there is definitely something wrong.
@lovesC1998 It's all in how you perceive the beauty of God and the world he created. I find great peace, joy, and yes - darkness - in the music of Kevin Max. If music makes you feel depressed, then the problem may be in you. Heat means that everything burns, even the darkest parts. Let yourself believe that anything is outside of God, and you will go through life seeing only the positive, no matter how untrue.
Read the Psalms, and you'll discover far more darkness than any Kevin Max song.

@rebekahreed2007 they never officially broke up. they did the "intermission album" and their last tour together was an intro to their solo stuff. it was a mutual agreement that they all wanted to venture out and do solo stuff to express themselves individually. horrible for fans but toby is always hinting never say never on a reunion and i believe him. :) also kevin felt out numbered by the other two because he had such different ideas on creative stuff. he needed it more than any of them.

@delano25charles25 I'd have to answer that by saying that Kevin Max is in every way a Poet, and imo, a brilliant one. His best songs don't have the kind of lyrics that you can turn your brain off to if you want to dig out some meaning. And I think the point is *to do the digging.* I've always thought of good human poetry in the same way as Jesus' parables; they sound great on the surface, but if you have the guts to dig a little you might find the heart of it - and learn the lesson for yourself

@nickolauski I think I understand where you're coming from and what you mean - and I wouldn't disagree. But perhaps what I meant would be best served by referencing the verse that most makes me look at things this way; Mark 4:11-12.

@USsoldierDCTalk He is still singing; he's actually got a few albums and another one called Cotes d'Armor on the way. The only thing is his alternative Christian music isn't getting much airplay like TobyMac or Newsboys. His first solo album Stereotype Be is actually pretty good.
I love Kevin's voice, I loved him in dcTalks, but I love his music as an individual also. Just because your a christian, it doesn't keep you from trails and people need to quit judging this man. God has blessed him with a fantastic voice and I hope he keeps singing!

Kevin Max was the biggest creative force in dc Talk, and also the most stifled early on, but most prominent toward the end. His solo stuff is nowhere near as successful as Tait or TobyMac, but then it's nowhere near as commercial. Of the three, he's the only one of which I'd use the term "artist." Love me some K-Max.
I never listened to DC Talk, I found this guy first, singing a Christmas song. And I just love his voice! When I found myself listening to the one song all year, I figured I'd better see what else he'd done. What I love is the combination of the Voice, the intelligent and poetic lyrics, and a very pleasing sort of rhythm... not just a beat but more complex, to match the singing.
I still listen to this album from time to time. From the moment I first heard the song "Consume Me", I love this guys voice and what he could do with it. Total poetry in motion to hear him sing.

A preamble: I'm no fan of "true rap" - I just don't like the style, but in any case -
What, exactly, makes one particular *style of music* "Satan territory," and another "Christian?" Would you say Kutless is Satanic by your standards, because they are a rock group? What about dcTalk, Switchfoot, the Newsboys, Building 429, Casting Crowns, or MercyMe? After all, they've embraced some elements of modern music too - rock, pop, rap - albeit at a softer level.
Granted, I as a Christian do have some trouble fully accepting the more "hard-core" Christian rappers and hard rockers, I try to acknowledge that it's not the musical style itself, but the message. I may not be a fan, but what you say and how you say it are both important - and different - things.
So I ask you: by your standards, what, then, is bona fide "Christian territory," or the proper "Christian Genre?" Should we all musically regress to Gregorian Chants?

Quite honestly I'm having a hard time deciphering what you're trying to say... From what I could guess, it seems you're saying that if God/Christ is not literally, explicitly, specifically mentioned, then it's not acceptable as "Christian." I would tend to disagree; even Jesus taught in parables - try Luke 8:10 and maybe you'll catch my "hidden meaning." But at any level you're entitled to your opinion, just as I'm entitled not to share it, and it is an interesting topic.

I think it confuses his audience because this image isn't one of someone filled with the joy and peace of Christ, it's a bit self centered perhaps...even so, I've always listened to DC talk when feeling melancholy or distant from God. Sin makes us feel this way, "just between you and me" is a good follow up song.

You know it would be just fantastic if CCM wrapped up shop and disappeared tomorrow. Music is music, period. Communication cannot be broken down on lines of faith. I know, I grew up watching that very phenomenon fail daily. Appreciate the artists brave enough to sing their faith to those outside that faith without apology. He is an artist who happens to be a Christian. Stop validating your "in the world but not of it" mentality vicariously through these artists, it impairs you.

I never feel depressed or 'dark' , even when I read the hard times that people went through in the Bible. Dark feelings do not come from God. I feel like people get way into the dark and moody parts of music sometimes, and that's when it's wrong if you are claiming to be associated with Jesus. Anytime you read about darkness in the Bible, it is always associated with satan or evil men.

The reason I don't care for Kevin is that I feel very 'dark' when I see his interviews and music videos. I feel like when you love Jesus, there is happiness, peace, and joy. I do not recognize anything like that in Kevin. When you truly love Jesus, those things can not hide, they pour out of your life. There is no middle road, you are either hot, or cold. If music makes you feel depressed that is supposed to be 'Christian'.. then there is definitely something wrong.

@lovesC1998 It's all in how you perceive the beauty of God and the world he created. I find great peace, joy, and yes - darkness - in the music of Kevin Max. If music makes you feel depressed, then the problem may be in you. Heat means that everything burns, even the darkest parts. Let yourself believe that anything is outside of God, and you will go through life seeing only the positive, no matter how untrue.
Read the Psalms, and you'll discover far more darkness than any Kevin Max song.

@rebekahreed2007 they never officially broke up. they did the "intermission album" and their last tour together was an intro to their solo stuff. it was a mutual agreement that they all wanted to venture out and do solo stuff to express themselves individually. horrible for fans but toby is always hinting never say never on a reunion and i believe him. :) also kevin felt out numbered by the other two because he had such different ideas on creative stuff. he needed it more than any of them.

@delano25charles25 I'd have to answer that by saying that Kevin Max is in every way a Poet, and imo, a brilliant one. His best songs don't have the kind of lyrics that you can turn your brain off to if you want to dig out some meaning. And I think the point is *to do the digging.* I've always thought of good human poetry in the same way as Jesus' parables; they sound great on the surface, but if you have the guts to dig a little you might find the heart of it - and learn the lesson for yourself

@nickolauski I think I understand where you're coming from and what you mean - and I wouldn't disagree. But perhaps what I meant would be best served by referencing the verse that most makes me look at things this way; Mark 4:11-12.

I suppose... what is a puzzle for some, is an answer for others.

@USsoldierDCTalk He is still singing; he's actually got a few albums and another one called Cotes d'Armor on the way. The only thing is his alternative Christian music isn't getting much airplay like TobyMac or Newsboys. His first solo album Stereotype Be is actually pretty good.

Kevin Max was the biggest creative force in dc Talk, and also the most stifled early on, but most prominent toward the end. His solo stuff is nowhere near as successful as Tait or TobyMac, but then it's nowhere near as commercial. Of the three, he's the only one of which I'd use the term "artist." Love me some K-Max.

I never listened to DC Talk, I found this guy first, singing a Christmas song. And I just love his voice! When I found myself listening to the one song all year, I figured I'd better see what else he'd done. What I love is the combination of the Voice, the intelligent and poetic lyrics, and a very pleasing sort of rhythm... not just a beat but more complex, to match the singing.
But I have to say this... dude, nice wings. Hee.

What, exactly, makes one particular *style of music* "Satan territory," and another "Christian?" Would you say Kutless is Satanic by your standards, because they are a rock group? What about dcTalk, Switchfoot, the Newsboys, Building 429, Casting Crowns, or MercyMe? After all, they've embraced some elements of modern music too - rock, pop, rap - albeit at a softer level.

Granted, I as a Christian do have some trouble fully accepting the more "hard-core" Christian rappers and hard rockers, I try to acknowledge that it's not the musical style itself, but the message. I may not be a fan, but what you say and how you say it are both important - and different - things.
So I ask you: by your standards, what, then, is bona fide "Christian territory," or the proper "Christian Genre?" Should we all musically regress to Gregorian Chants?

Quite honestly I'm having a hard time deciphering what you're trying to say... From what I could guess, it seems you're saying that if God/Christ is not literally, explicitly, specifically mentioned, then it's not acceptable as "Christian." I would tend to disagree; even Jesus taught in parables - try Luke 8:10 and maybe you'll catch my "hidden meaning." But at any level you're entitled to your opinion, just as I'm entitled not to share it, and it is an interesting topic.
