  • Kermit did this shit.

  • holy S that was awesome !

  • I was expecting to see a high speed train wreck like in The Fugitive.

  • Better get those carriages back on the tracks before the boss sees it.

  • The switch indicator can be seen again for a split second at 3:42 on the right of the video (in the previous comment, I meant RIGHT, not left)

  • At 3:07, the point switch (in the middle of the graffiti'd wall) is far outside the left of the video (it goes out of view at 2:50) so it definitely derailed a distance after the switch.

  • And thats why you don't put pennies on the railroad track...

  • 3:07 The first bogie of the first truck sinks onto the rail when the wheel slipping off makes a bell-like sound.

  • Damn! Why didn't you sell this video to the media or CSX. They could have used it for instructional or even legal purposes. Could have made a nice little piece of money.

  • How the heck did it happen?

  • @TrainzmanDude2012 its CSX what do you expect? haha

  • Dang!!

  • I will NEVER forget watching this video. First time I have actually seen a train derail. AMAZING.

  • TIMBURRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You mean to tell me this switch wasn't even Locked, WTF?!

  • did the railroad officials wanna see the footage

  • as bad as it is to see a derailment, that is without a doubt, the best shot ever of one. you were beyond lucky to be able to catch that. and i am beyond lucky to be able to see it

  • I love how quiet it gets after it dumps, good stuff!

  • holy crap that was epic

  • 5* video. awesome.

  • I hope there was nothing toxic in those hoppers, because i would be running like hell! WOW! That is a nightmare there lol!

  • Just out of curiosity, did CSX ask for a copy/access to your footage, just to see if it would help identify the problem or anything? Pretty nice of the official to come up and talk to you guys!

  • It would have been nice to see the derailment that happened not too far from where I live: 31 grain cars, 17 of which dropped approximately 200 ft off of a trestle bridge crossing the river valley.

  • Wow, it isn't everyday you see that happen like that, Wow!

  • I think the switch shifted ever so slightly back to its original position (before the engineer/ conductor) "threw it." It didn't go all the way back, but enough to cause the derailment. It is easy to see that before he got back on the train, he had to use his foot to finish the job.

  • This De-Railment kinda reminds me alot of the 2 train de-railments that happened here in Kentucky (Bullitt County) 1) occurred in 2005 or 2006, 2) occurred in 2008, 2009 or 2010, although # 2 was carrying auto carriers , it de-railed at the same location as # 1 (Location of both de-railments was Coral Ridge Rd., & Hubert Station Rd.) Just before the city of Shepherdsville, Ky.

  • oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt

  • I bet the crew got a piss test that day

  • 3 million for only 5-6 cars derailed? those rails must be worth a fortune a piece!

  • shit! i tthink i was driving by when this happened (semi on the bridge)i saw a train do this but i cant rember what state i was in

  • FROG????

  • @Fan2La The "frog" is the component in the switch where the two inside rails meet in a "V" and diverge.

  • that old seaboard hopper was the culprit.

  • no FREAKING way!!! have ever, not even once in my lifetime, have I EVER recorded a derailment in action/progress... this is just amazing but yet Interesting!!

  • Could have been sharp wheels.

  • My first time watch derailment train...

    Nice video :)

  • wow

  • Doesn't the switch throw arm have to be latched in down position? You can see that the engineer was pushing on it. The movement and pounding of the railcars on the switch eventually dislodged the switchrail setting. If you played with model trains as a youth like I have, this happens. The derailment came close to taking out power poles.

  • @DOLRED Not all switches have latches to hold the arm in place.

  • I've NEVER seen a train actually derail before.

  • Nice catch! That's why you don't stand too close to the tracks when taking photos! Glad you guys are all okay!

  • Strano questi sviamento, cosa sarà successo? Non e stato chiuso perfettamente l'ago dello scambio?

  • CSX DOES IT AGAIN!....thats why its my favorite line!

  • Wow cool video! I once saw 3 engines by them selves slow, stop and then slowly tip over onto their sides due to a sinkhole below the tracks. It was neat but I never had a video as the smartphone was not invented yet :) The crane that rolled in the tracks to upright the engines was really neat too!

  • live eh?

  • When did you notice the first sign of trouble?

  • wooww :O have never seen a full derailment happen!

  • csx is a fuck off

  • O_________________________________O

  • this is why I don't hangout near railroad tracks, if that thing were going faster all these guys would be in trouble.

  • One more question:what is a "frog"?

  • @Squarerig i think its the point where the track splits into the turn out...in other words the point

  • Woah... Didn't expect to see cars rolling... Very nice catch.

  • If there were an "Oscar" for railway shots I would very definitely award it to you, cnwtrain for this truly extraordinary film clip. But what caused this wreck?

  • @Squarerig We've been told a broken rail. We think it was a bad wheel flange. There was some metal shavings found in the frog. We saw the officials picking them out.It wasn't the switch points like most everyone here assumes. The first car came off the track long after the switch.

  • @cnwtrain That was like a jackpot for you guys.

  • @Squarerig if you're into trainwreck videos, search out Southall in England on Youtube. Very poor taste, but like this an amazing piece of film.

  • Wow that has to be the craziest 5MPH train wreck in history.

  • This is one of the best videos on youtube for derailment i've seen...simple railfanning gone chaotic. Good camera work, this should have a lot more views than it does.

  • @MrPaintBall879 Is there another video out there catching a train in the act of derailing?

  • @cnwtrain There is the one of a tornado causing a derailment on YT.

  • @joeylawn36111 Oh yeh, forgot about that one.

  • @cnwtrain and the bnsf hitting each other head on, and a train hitting a washout. there's surprisingly a lot of derailment videos

  • That was cool as hell, As long as nobody got hurt.

  • Holy cats! It is amazing that you filmed those cars going off the tracks!

Do you know what caused them to derail?

How long did it take CSX to clean up the mess?

That was nice camera work! And I like that the camera doesn't shake, like I see in so many railroad videos.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm willing to bet , and it seems the Conductor or Brakeman didn't secure the keeper when he trew the switch, thus the cars picking the switch

  • time to invest on new covered hoppers -_-

  • if only it ere going faster

  • How did this managed to happen? It appears the cars were wobbling so there must have been something wrong with the bogies?

  • Fantastic video!

  • csx...

  • Wow nice catch

  • well done.

  • you americans sure do get exited dont you how many times did i hear ITS OFF THE TRACK, brilliant video though, one for the records,

  • @488scooby I'm sure I'd've been swearing repetitively!

  • What a scoop! Well done for being in the right place at the right time. I expect the video would be useful to prove how it happened!

  • Maybe the rail rolled...

  • Some people wait their whole life to capture a derailment with cars turining over.... and never see one. But its like nascar... if you own the car, you hate to see it wrecked. But the fans love to see the wrecks... go figure. Right place at the right time the way I see it. Glad you all were smart enough to mind your distance... otherwise.... well we all know....

  • Look at that wonderful Louisiana infrastructure in action.

  • ive been alive 43 years and have never seen one actually derail great catch

  • @Darrenjudy5 when i was 8 i saw 9 loaded coal cars and caboose lay over on a curve, now that was loud!!!!

  • Wander if this guy gets to keep his job

  • CSX EPIC FAIL!!!!

  • What a catch, the odds of that are slim to none.

  • I was listening in headphones, and right at 3:08 there is a loud CLANG like someone dropped a length of iron pipe on a concrete floor... wonder if that was the noise of the rail breaking, or whatever it was. Anybody else notice this?

  • Unbelievable you guys have to be the luckiest railfanners ever pity tho you did not have a scanner to hear what the poor driver had to tell his controller

  • WOW you'll never get that again and its good that you were set up on a tripod and go a steady shot of is, wow that was a bit of excitement

that will take a bit of sweeping up.

  • holy shit

  • Amazing footage. I´m feeling with the crew of this train.

Even if they aren´t responsible for the accident....I bet they had pretty annoying trouble after that.

    Thumbs up for the video!

  • That's why I call it the "Cheesy System." LOL

Did anyone else notice the switch had no lock on it? Or is it not on the main track?

  • @JLJ061 It's not on the main.

  • @JLJ061 "Cheesy System". Typical railfan comment. And you guys wonder why there are railroaders who do not want you around.

  • @Boss302fan Calm down, asshole.

  • @BNSFnick Actually, I'm very calm. Just pointing out why railroaders often dislike railfans.

  • @Boss302fan Just a joke, dude, chill. Everyone knows mishaps like this can happen anywhere, on any line.

  • @JLJ061 Sure. Just a joke. Not a problem JL. I have no need to chill. I wasn't upset at all.

I was calmly pointing out that this is the type of railfan comment that in turn pisses off railroaders and in turn has some of them flipping you off as they roll by.

Might be a joke to you.

To those who work on CSXT (and often this isn't an easy job as evidenced by this video) maybe the joke isn't so funny.

  • @Boss302fan I've never come across a crew that flipped me off as they went by. Maybe you just hate railfans.

  • @BNSFnick I work for BNSF and I don't hate them at all. Indeed, I suggest to crews who report to me that they give a friendly wave. If I am asked politely I will usually tell railfans where and when they can find local jobs. I even point out good spots to shoot from. And 90% of the railfans are fine people following a hobby. But it is the other 10% who in turn cause many professionals to run you off or flip you off. Hang around long enough and you'll eventually see it.

  • @Boss302fan Trust me I've seen plenty of annoying ones. I try to stay away from them myself. Turns a hobby into hell.

  • @BNSFnick It's not just railfans. I am a big muscle car fan (maybe why I am sympathetic to railfans). And we have our share of assholes who ruin it for everyone. Was at a car show one afternoon and found a man "underneath" my car. Just a local wash and shine type of affair. When I asked what he was doing he began to berate me for using the wrong type of muffler hangers.

Takes all kinds. Come see us at Longbeach one day. Big trains and lots of public vantage points! :>

  • @Boss302fan Damn. I've encounted some wierd ones at car shows as well, I own a 1970 AAR 'Cuda. But never that wierd.

  • @BNSFnick Used to own one of those. Lemon Twist. Bought the car off a kid that had blown the engine and let it sit. NOM. Still had the six pack. Restored it and sold it a few years ago. Despite my name here I don't only own a Boss 302. Also have a 70 'cuda conv. Shaker car. Lot of fun.

  • @Boss302fan Nice. Got the Lemon Twist myself.

  • And yep, the accident was caused by an old Chessie hopper! It's always the older rollingstock that derail! Especially Chessie hoppers! LOL

  • @StarWarsTrains Where did you get this info? From what I have read it was caused by a broken rail....and I believe this is CN trackage. ( Unfortunately I could be passing on bad info here....I haven't read the official accident report)

  • @Boss302fan If you look closely at the axles on the Chessie Hopper @ 3:07, then you'll know!

  • @StarWarsTrains OK....I see axles on a CSXT hopper at 3:07. What is that portion of the video supposed to tell me? CSXT buys wheels and axles from the same manufacturers as any other railroad. There are not that many out there. Those cars are subject to the same inspections as those owned by any other leasing company, and as they are in interchange service they are inspected by multiple railroads. C113's do derail at a high frequency, but not just those owned by CSXT.

  • @Boss302fan You are correct. Good info.

  • @StarWarsTrains NOOOOOO Not the chessie hopper!!!

  • @MrMattIntel LOL

  • CSX knows about all of the broken rails, yet they do nothing about them. There is a road that they use that has over fourty broken rails that they know about and yet nothing..#UNSAFE

  • @carlos29532 Typical railfan comment.

  • @Boss302fan I have seen at least three for myself on that road. The road inspector even said that there wer at least that many.

  • @carlos29532 Another typical railfan comment. What branch? Where? What was the branch rated to carry? What type of tonnage moves over the branch? What class of track? I could go on and on.

  • @Boss302fan I agree with you on that! You can't always blame the company for accidents like this, unless it involves deaths from a derailment! Accidents happen, while 80% of train accidents are caused by idiotic drivers!

  • How loud was that hearing the cars fall over like that?

  • @PereMarquette1223 Wasn't really that loud.

  • @cnwtrain i saw 9 loaded coal cars and the caboose (in 1983) turn over going around a curve that sounded like the end of the world!

  • Actually, the first care derailed after the trailing engine went buy. So the engines were on the rail. 3:07 he was already on the ground.

  • Wow. Derailment on tape. Very interesting to see. Wow. I wish I was there

  • 3:56 who in the world would look away in this moment???? Well...at least he got to see the cars tumbling down the ROW....

  • what are the odds you'd have a camera there? amazing.

  • @Bhousm76 i know what are the chances?

  • @cnwtrain 1 in 300000

  • so this is the derailment my father told me about

  • CSX = How tomorrow moves! With all your transportation needs, you can count on CSX. CraSh eXpert.

  • @Nathanrailfan Yep. Another railfan spouts off with silly commentary. I'm always amazed that those who proclaim to love the industry or follow it as a hobby take particualr delight in trashing it. No recognition of the amazing results CSXT has had over the past years in improving traffic, safety, and revenue. No, instead it's more fun to trash the industry and those who work in it. Amazing.

  • @Boss302fan Maybe the reason I trash it is because I am sick of seeing CSX all the time! You know there are OTHER roads out there too and I wish I could see them. But no, I would have to drive 500 miles or more to see the other roads. CSX after CSX after CSX after CSX gets rather annoying after time. I miss the days I could see SD40-2's and that's never going to happen. CSX and NS is good if Dash 9's and AC4400CW's is your favorite locomotives.

  • @Nathanrailfan So you see a railroad too much and therefore you just start trashing the men and women of a railroad who work hard every day to do a good job? Because you see it too much and are annoyed. How old are you....14?

My gut feeling is that there ae multiple shortline operations where you live that you could see. Go take a look and maybe you'll grow up and stop being so negative about your hobby.

  • The Conductor is responcible for the train,he's the boss

  • @kive33 OK. That's true. But I sure hope you are not suggesting the conductor is responsible for this derailment. If you are....you are dead wrong.

  • @Boss302fan You Are Right Am Just saying,GREAT VIDEO

  • god help the Seaboard System hopper, It was one of the cars that tipped over. The FLS boxcar was okay.

  • @MrMattIntel FLS boxcar? Huh?

  • @Boss302fan i meant hopper...

  • @MrMattIntel FLS?

  • @Boss302fan Family Lines System. A merger of Seaboard System, Louisville & Nashville, and Seaboard Coast line in the 80's. They were absorbed by CSX inthe 90s.

  • @MrMattIntel Um...actually Seaboard System was renamed from the Family Lines System in the '80's, which is when the Chessie System and Seaboard System railroad corporations merged to become what is now known as CSX (Chessie Seaboard Xpress) like with BNSF being Burlington Northern Santa Fe!

  • I don't know why, but it annoys me that at 3:57, that idiot turns away JUST as the cars start falling over? Who turns away from a train derailment? lol

  • @gloomyoutlook Maybe it bothers you because you are the idiot? Ya think?

  • How has this video not gone viral??

  • My favorite vid ever !

  • Good to see somebody called 911 in case of injuries.....

  • thanks for letting us know it was a train wreck

  • @jwbrown1968 Don't mention it:)

  • @cnwtrain I feel bad 'almost" for CSX they have record numbers of train derailments. my dad recently retired from CSX as a engineer for over 39 yrs and two uncles. Thye were treated badly by CSX and CSX has no love for rail fans or there employees or the public. Ah yet another republican greed company. This past weekend we got HUGE traffic as CSX had a htree way derialment and re routed over NS toleod east west. toledoOHindependentrailfan @ photobucket. enjoy the pics we put up. GOD BLESS

  • Thanks for posting this video.

  • holy ****!

  • Not gonna lie, that was pretty sweet, nice catch

  • which boxcar was the blame?

  • @chuyflaco None, they said it was a broken rail, just after the frog.

  • @chuyflaco I did not take a job on CSX becuse I jojned the Army and as my son has now. He was wounded three weeks ago in combat and is thinking about CSX when he comes home I told him to work for NS as CSX shits on there employees. He loves unions and is a democrat just like me and my wife and family. GOD BLESS all true american union members our RR brothers and sisters. This is a great video brother

  • @chuyflaco When i was 17 before i left for the Army basic training I was at the maumee river bridge fishing and a COnrail MOW crew was grinding the frog on the switch ( what you call it ??) and a mail train came along and just torw right through it. I had pics but never showed them. I watched these two MOW guys just jump for there lives and the machine got blwd up to small parts into the river. Conrail told me to get my ass out or I would be arrested I told them to fuck off.

  • @ussoldierrail I actualy took pics as I had my camera for taking pics of channel cat and huge CARP fish. I had pics as it happened. I was right next to them. the train got a hole in the fuel tank I think. I helpoed the guys off the ground and they were very upset. Said someone was gonna get fired. The COnrail officials wanted my camera but i again told them to go jump. that was like 1989. I bet half that track machine is still in the river to this day. GOD BLESS those two RR MOW MEN.

  • @chuyflaco There are no "boxcars" shown. They're all covered hoppers.

  • I like how these railfans are already throwing the conductor under the bus. Future trainmasters here.

  • @UncleJ4 As a former trainmaster I should be pissed and take exception to your comment. In particular as elsewhere in this thread I have defended this conductor from attacks of uninformed but know-it-all railfans.

But to be honest, I've known too many trainmasters who probably fit your train of thought when you wrote what you did.

  • @Boss302fan For every 10 moron trainmasters who never worked in train or engine service before there is 1 or 2 that will look at a derailment and say, "Yeah, it's broken rail." The rest will try to make it a human factor incident.

Or somebody from MoW shows up and tries to blame the crew so the cost of the re-rail doesn't come out of their budget.

  • @UncleJ4 Again, as a long time member of railroad management I wish I could say you were completely wrong. But the only exception I can take is the "never worked in train or engine service comment". In my experience most of the trainmasters I've worked with started out on the ground or in the cab.

And I love the guys from MOW. They've saved me many times (or made my life better).

But yeah...all in all...I know what you're saying is unfortunately at least partially true.

  • @Boss302fan I understand. I try and not let one or two rotten apples ruin the whole thing for me. I love my job, however the company makes me shake my head sometimes.

  • @UncleJ4 I know, it wasn't the conductors fault.

  • Comment removed

  • good footage man. my heart was beatin hard just watchin. lol

  • "They gonna be here for a while now"

  • Rare to catch this on film as it happens! what an experience, thanks for sharing it!

  • wow wow o my got awesome derailmet grettings from mexico....

  • One of the worst feelings in a conductor and engineers life, is to come up on a car or truck or eighteen wheeler and not see it, then hear a loud boom, this wreck right here on video was similar to what happened in Cartersville, Ga. just Northwest of Atlanta Ga. with a CSX train.

  • do you know if the driver was breaking during the time when the car went on the ground

  • haha the guys heart is beating like crazy, well..........that conductor and engineer hearts probably exploded and they were feeling worse shitting themselves after this. As a conductor whose been involved in a derailment before, i know the feeling

  • @treos17 I dunno. At this speed with this type of train at this location I think I would describe the feeling more as a "ahhhhh shhhiiiittttt" than an exploding heart. I'm not aware of anyone I've run with who would have "shit themselves" in a 10 mph derailment.

  • @Boss302fan yeah your right, i did almost did when the car i was riding went on the ground and almost went into the side of a building we were only going 3, 4 miles and hour. Luckily it stopped or theres a chance i could've been pancaked
