that's a little extreme but yes it's a huge problem there should be caps on personal CEO payments and that investors choose the people that lead the company and should have control over these asshole
im a responsible taxpayer and very frustrated with the way this society is set up..they penalize hard work and paying yur bills on time and they bailout financial deliquency. i may as well just stop paying my debts just like everyone else and just be rewarded for being a leech and being lazy! the "American dream" is a dying ideology..how sad.

yeah but bad credits makes life incredibly hard for providing for the family and some people would rather keep working like slaves than deny their family the things it wants/needs...
Credit cards need new federal regulations with teeth. Years ago the Supreme Court ruled the interest rates charged to customers are governed by laws of the state where banks locate their credit card operations, NOT the state where the consumer lives. Thus, banks locate these in South Dakota and Delaware, states with high or no ceilings on interest rates. Citibank was the first bank to move credit card business to SD. Congress must prohibit usury and establish reasonable interest rates.
I think if enough people pay off their cards, we're going to see those people cutting up their cards and it's going to backfire on the credit card companies.
I propose that everyone who sees this video cut up all but one card and pay the others off asap.
Inasmuch as they're jacking up the rate on some customers to 29.99%,
And inasmuch as they are telling Congress they've so screwed up their companies with lavish parties & huge bonuses, that they're in bad financial shape & need billions,
Shouldn't we therefore be charging them 29.99% interest on our taxpayer loans to them?
I mean, more than just voting for a person, because I get the sense that no one we elect is going to fix this. So how do we take our country back from these guys?
I studied organized crime in my major, and the way these execs operate is so similar to criminal organizations you probably couldn't tell them apart.
Hello! Why do you think medical insurance all of a sudden went through the roof after several decades of good cost containment? Big insurance companies lost a shitload of cash during the Enron and dotcom bust.. Same shifting of rate hikes where it can be done to recoup losses has been going on for a long time.
The worthless dumbass war in Iraq is estimated to cost $3 Trillion after all the bills are paid for interest, veterans lifelong health costs, combat operations, and infrastructure. Bush Admin said the Iraq oil would fund reconstruction, and the US taxpayer would hardly have to pay even $10 billion. That was in 2003. So it's ok to spend $3 Trillion on war and massacre in Iraq, but not $1 Trillion for people here?
Demopublicans want to give everyone jobs and let no company fail. They know better then you how to spend your money, you wouldn't know what to do with it. Your like a child and they'll "create" jobs.
I will remind you everyone in Russia had a job you see how well that went.
I wasn't avoiding the question, sorry, not my intention.
I'm a political atheist. I don't believe in parties. But the Iraq war spending, spurred on by the Democrats refusal to stop it's funding for political gain (Rahm Emanuel, leading the charge) was horrible. I don't believe in stealing from productive Americans or stealing from generations unborn to pay for our mistakes. Your mistake.
If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and the corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.... The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.
Luckily, I don't have to worry about my credit rating. So when I make a mistake and I send the CC a payment that is $10 short of the balance owing, and they want to charge me their usurious rates on some fictitious amount, I tell them to go take a hike.
This is not new news. The Bankruptcy law that congress passed in 2005 allowed credit card companies to do this. It isn't just one card, you can be late on any credit card and all of your credit cards can be raised. Cenk, pull up the bankruptcy law that was passed a few years ago. This was passed by a republican congress for the banks to prevent consumers from filling bankruptcy and getting out from under debt.
I suppose that if you can see that the economic order is starting to implode, it makes sense that those in position to do so will soak that system for all it it worth, while the money is there for the taking.
so the money from the tax payers lent to city Bank should be charged at 60% and the debt burden should be extended no only to city bank but also to all of city Banks management.
Credit card companies screw more people than a $10 whorehouse on the Vegas Strip. Yet Sallie Mae and other student loan companies make credit card companies look like a $500 whorehouse in Henderson. Why doesn't anyone talk about the far more predatory student loan racketeering industry? It be nice to finally see someone publicly expose Sallie Mae's most faithful John in Congress--John Boehner. Credit cards-->bankruptcy. Student loan racketeering-->homelessness, fleeing the country, suicide.
you are on glue. Most of the time the student credit cards are only have a $500 limit. If you cant manage your own debt then you don't deserve any credit. Didn't your parents teach you anything? Grow up and become an adult!!
I have an idea, too. Credit card company execs can get a 2nd and/or 3rd job, downsize to a smaller mansion, sell off a few of the cars, let a couple of country club memberships expire, send their kids to community college rather than Harvard, and fly coach, rather than begging on K Street in Washington for billions of borrowed dollars to bail out their irresponsible and incomprehensible failure as executives, while taxpayers get stuck with the bill.
great, just what we need, more kids going to community college rather than Harvard. That mansion put many construction guys to work. That golf course employess many people and the private plane is Made in America. Not to mention the sales taxes collected on all those cars you talked about.
What you forget is the "RICH" pay more in taxes and spend more money for the economy in 1 year than you do in your entire life. Making money is not bad. You seem to think it is. What's bad is all those people who cant pay their debts. They are the ones putting us in this bind not a credit card CEOs. LOL. How many CEOs of CC companies are there in the USA anyways, 20-30? We are in a housing crisis that has never happen before. Tell me how do you prepare for that? Get real
Okay, do you see Obama getting tough with these ceos? Not talking about words but actions. He hasn't lifted a finger to stop this. Don't get me wrong, I don't want McCain or Bush back but come on. Wasn't Obama supposed to CHANGE this shit? Doesn't look like he's very interested in doing that...retard.
Bring back the 90% marginal tax rate on all income over $400k. The American economy performed great during the 1950s when the top marginal tax rate was 90%.
you wanna make money off a credit card open a merchant account and charge your own card I did it for years @ 3% merchant fees on a 0% card its almost like free money , no intrest and run it right through you own bussiness account
your not a idiot if you buy a new car . just look at the numbers . I bought a car on a credit card 0% 15 month card thats 0% I got stuck with Taxes but No intrest paid car off in 14 months you dont loose . remember you own nothing ever people tell me all the time they own there house free and clear.. I say stop paying your Taxes and see how long you own it .. we are all slaves just be a smart one it is all in numbers .
Dont blame the credit comps I have used them my whole life for everything you just need to understand them and be on top at all times. its simple math life is about numbers when it comes to money. its simple math everyone . if you dont know how to calculate % on the dollar you should not own a credit card. Shuffle and transfer and keep your 3 scores high above 740 and you will be fine . everyone wants top dollar for anything . all numbers , all numbers numbers numbers numbers
there is a need for credit cards, so to say not to use them is just not realistic as you need good credit. The best way is to pay for your debt before the percentage kicks in. it may not be the best way to increase your credit score but it is the best way to use a credit card and still not get gouged.
Obama is doing nothing why did he run for president? he clearly is not up to the job, he compares himself to Lincoln but is looking more like hoover, credit card companies have no better friend than Biden, who in 2005 voted for the bankrupcy that they so desperatly wanted
2. you dont pay for a car with a credit card, you make payment with interests, if you put those payments with interests on a credit card...with interests, you're an idiot
I know a couple who have paid for their house on credit cards. They have like 25 credit cards, and rotate the money around them. They actually make money doing it.
In all fairness the debt has to be paid from somewhere. The best method to get us out of the 'downturn' is to jack up interest rates. In other words, paying off the debt.
Low interest rates mean people will feel safer getting credit and they really shouldn't.
The best way to stimulate the economy and make hoemowners safe from repossession is to force all banks to put interest rates down to 2.5% on credit cards, loans and mortgages. This would create easy repayments and give people an excess cash for them to spend in the economy.
hey it's the gov. you personally have been rooting for for the past 5 months. why do you root for these sleaze-ball democrats? democrats = republicans = con men
Ah, c'mon...congress didn't "vote" for the raise, it was automatic. Be truthful. In fact, Harry Mitchell (D) voted to suspend it, along with 34 others, but were out-voted.
Don't sign up for or use credit cards. Save your money, use debit cards. I don't trust banks or bankers and, I'll never use a credit card in my life. Never.
You have every right to be pissed off, but unfortunately, that's the way it's done in D.C.
These whores get the big money from our "legislators", then retain some of the money for "bonus' ", then make a nice contribution back to the legislators.
While the Congress, (who recently voted themselves another raise), doesn't give a shit, because it's not their money. It's mine and yours.
This whole "stimulus" plan is pathetic, as it only will make the rich...........richer. (As usual).
Only one way to deal with CC cos. Get a no fee card and pay the full bill every month. You get to use their money for 30 days interest fee. If you operate under the principle that every corp will try to screw you sooner or later, you should be OK.
Exactly , but we have no say in where it goes, thats what we elect "more capable" people to make those decisions, and look were we are now. They just keep taking and taking and taking and theres nothing we can do but pay it,, otherwise were the bad guys and we get nothing for it but lies! HAHAHA I swear between having no money and people like this trying to suck us dry im ready to lose it!
Lets hope Obama can figure out a way out of this mess otherwise its going to be a long fallout.
We should regulate this! We are giving them a loan so they can loosen up credit not raise our rates! We should put some strings on these loans. I totally agree with Cenk.
Putting strings on this is necessary, since on top of it, it is bad for the economy and defeats the purpose of the stimulus plan because it discourages spending or is only result in more bankruptcies and debt.
If you guys read the fine print when you SIGN UP for a credit card you know they are allowed to do this, and thus you would hopefully be like myself and carry no debt on your credit cards. If you don't like what they're doing I recommend finding another company with a few more morals. Luckily I don't have Citibank cards or loans, fuck them for doing this, and ditto to the similar credit companies.
Ya. Citibank jerked me around, too. Will never use them again.
I have a new philosophy: I only have one card, it's through a department store. My thinking is that if they try to jack up the rates, there will be an organized backlash against their store chain, which will cost them dearly. So far, they haven't screwed with me.
lets add to it that credit cards and credit as a whole are causing out of control inflation beyond what the average American consumer can keep up with. how many people do you know that could buy a reliable form of transportation to get to work or school without credit? its the same as the increased cost in medical care and tuition. if enough people will pay increased fees for services and goods the cost will continually go up. we are forced to live off of credit because without it we are done!
now lets think about a home... raise your hand if you would buy a house without a loan of some kind... how far back into history do we need to go before we find people who owned their own homes? you may think what "would we do without all these loans, how would we live?" in this day and age without change.. you couldn't live. if things changed we would could all live just as we do now. it takes over a million dollar savings for most people to safely retire. that just isnt right!
Then people wonder why I only shop at walmart and the 99 cent store! Sike I get my albertson's on every now and then but it does not pay to own a credit card unless your trying to own a home and good luck with that dream!!!!
You're right. It's not rocket science to be good with credit. But that's assuming most people are bright. It's just not true. There're a lot of people easily got by them, and that's why they should be checked. It doesn't make it right to have trap holes in the road, and say, "well the ones who don't see it deserve to have their car fall in." You should stop the assholes who put the holes in the road period.
Yeah, over 29 per cent on two of my credit cards, which is robbery, and criminal in my book. I am being forced to go bankrupt, so I haven't the money to give the stick-up man.
I received a letter a few days, ago, telling me that the state is taking my income tax check, for a credit card debt I owe. I do not understand how this is legal. Fucking America now a days....
Just don't take debt on your credit cards.. I've never paid a cent of interest on credit cards in my life, and any other smart person should be that way.
Inasmuch as the Credit Card Companies are increasing the interest rate on some of their customers to 29.99%, shouldn't we be charging them 29.99% on the gov't loans as they don't seem to be that great a credit risK?
I agree, it is ridiculous. They're charging us interest on money we gave them. But the money's not going into the executive's pocket. There job is to maximize shareholders profits.
Sorry Turk We DON`T "need" to bail out citibank. The govt should of let them fail and go bankrupt. What can we do - GET OUT OF Credit Card Debt ! - As the book of Proverbs says " The lender is a slave to the borrower"
I don't use credit cards. That is a choice I made as an angsty 90's teenager, displeased with the state of the world. Unfortunately, others have accumulated thousands and thousands of dollars in debt to buy plasma TV's and shiny cars, and my taxes are now paying for both fools and the crooked banks. The best thing anyone can do is turn off their TV, avoiding the constant pressure to have things that nobody really needs, just for the sake of having them, while others starve. You'll feel better.
I've had a credit card for years and I don't even know what the interest rate is on my card. Its irrelevant to me because I pay off my credit card every month. To achieve this, I simply don't spend money I don't have. I use my credit card as an interest free cash loan on a month to month basis and in this way the credit card company ends up paying me. This is how people should use credit cards. :D
The question is when are WE THE PEOPLE going to put a stop to this madness? The answer is NEVER there are to many of us excluding the present company that really dont give a shit. They have enough drama in their lives to be taking on a monster of a fuck up like this. We are slaves and we like it.
Some people don't make enough to pay for their essentials. Personally, I have around $5k in credit card debt after coming out of college and I wasn't spending on too many frivolous things. I kept a $0 balance until I moved off campus and started having to pay $430 a month for rent (even with 3 roommates). They really screw you in student housing, but the point is that it wasn't because I was financially irresponsible.
I've seen what some people define as "essentials". In my experience, people just spend beyond their means. I've worked minimum wage jobs and still made it by. How? I just paid for what I needed to survive which doesn't include TV. For some it does. I made less than $1000 a month and lived in meager accommodations. I worked 4 years after high school and paid for my own secondary schooling. People just make poor decisions that land them into a position where they turn to credit cards.
For me basic cable was part of the rent in the lease, so it wasn't a choice. $1000 a month is more than I have made in any job I have ever held, except for this last Christmas season in retail, but now they let me go because they were cutting back.
They let me go as seasonal even though I signed a part time contract, but thanks to NC's employee at will system I can't do a damn thing about it.
How did you end up in a place that forced cable upon you? I'm not sure how it is in the US, but in Canada most places don't include cable. You probably should've shopped around a bit more or gave yourself more time to do so.
I feel your pain. My very first job was subjected to cutbacks after 7 months. Thankfully I was only 15 and just learning the hardships of obtaining employment.
You can't tell me you saved enough to go to a decent 4yr school with 4 yrs at a min. wage job without help. It cost me $8k a year at a state school and that is only for tuition, books, and student fees. Maybe school cost less when and where you went to school, but the reality now is that you spend between $8k and $30k a year depending on where you go for a 4 year University.
My schooling was for 2yrs $30k. From leaving home at 16, there was no outside support. The job I worked to pay for it paid $2 over minimum wage. I had almost $50k saved. The rest went to shared rent. I worked a minimum wage job on the weekend while attending and after I graduated. Up until I got into the field I trained for, I sacrified a lot so I didn't have to pay for it later when I couldn't afford it. Prioritizing helped.
I figured you only got an associates. That is the only way I could figure that you could pay for college after only 4 year of working even at $2 over minimum wage, unless you joined the military.
My shared rent was $150. I lived in a basement suite with 2 other friends. My wage was $8.50hr and I worked 6 days a week for 4yrs. During school I worked at 7-11 for $6.50hr on weekends so I can have some spending money for myself. By doing this I saved enough for school. I received good advice from those who managed to do the same. My only expenses were food, rent, and phone. All shared.
Any bailed out company needs a salary cap just like Whole Foods Market has. No executive may earn a salary more than 10 times the amount of the lowest salary in the company.
But don't panic, the government collected money already, they should be fine for now. Just don't forget to take care so they are always well pampered, otherwise you're a socialist.
Speaking out against homos and abortion and birth control. Plain and simple.
Fundie fucknuts don't give a damn about economics and foreign policy and whatnot...as long as you bash gays and act as if you're on a crusade against abortion, you'll get their votes.
if we don't start investigating where the hell this money that the government gives these rich already executives that are greedy and only care about there interest.. These rich excutives have money aside and when hit shits the fan all there going to do is take there money and get the hell out of the US and go to another country live like kings and retire... As they say money is root of all evil. USA that everyone knew as we know it is over.
So credit card companies don't want to loan you stacks of money out of the kindness of their hearts? What a surprise. I've been telling my friends and family about this ripoff for years and they didn't want to listen. Now they're all stuck with huge debts and bitching about it.
I don't like the cc companies but dammit people walked into this problem with open eyes. That said they certainly shouldn't have gotten any bailout money.
It's funny how everybody is now against giving the banks money but while it was all going on you were all pussing out and being suckered into passing these shitty bailouts in the first place. Hidsight is 20/20 i get it, go ahead and tap yourself on the back for figuring it out now... idiots.
I don't use CCs that much anymore. I spent a good deal paying them off. Now I just use them for booking and keep the money on hand to pay them off. Or I use them to get the points and pay them back using the money the same funds I would have paid out of my paycheck. I have one Citibank card that I'm paying off. I don't even use it anymore. Over the years you get smarter at their tricks. Which is why I want my last card paid off.

p12psicop 3 years ago
I wasn't avoiding the question, sorry, not my intention.
I'm a political atheist. I don't believe in parties. But the Iraq war spending, spurred on by the Democrats refusal to stop it's funding for political gain (Rahm Emanuel, leading the charge) was horrible. I don't believe in stealing from productive Americans or stealing from generations unborn to pay for our mistakes. Your mistake.
chewbaca1989 3 years ago
If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and the corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.... The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.
-Thomas Jefferson
Federal Reserve is the problem that is D.C.

Luckily, I don't have to worry about my credit rating. So when I make a mistake and I send the CC a payment that is $10 short of the balance owing, and they want to charge me their usurious rates on some fictitious amount, I tell them to go take a hike.
So far, they have always taken a hike.

PaulsAcademy 3 years ago
great, just what we need, more kids going to community college rather than Harvard. That mansion put many construction guys to work. That golf course employess many people and the private plane is Made in America. Not to mention the sales taxes collected on all those cars you talked about.

If you can't make your payments on time, you deserve what you get.
Pay off your balance every single month.
The credit card companies are not screwing anyone. The consumer is screwing themselves with their horrific credit and terrible spending habits.
Buying things with credit is my most secure means of purchasing, as I am not responsible for any authorized transactions.
I also get about $1000 in rewards for my $100 credit card.

(As usual).

Garcia5180 3 years ago
We should regulate this! We are giving them a loan so they can loosen up credit not raise our rates! We should put some strings on these loans. I totally agree with Cenk.
Putting strings on this is necessary, since on top of it, it is bad for the economy and defeats the purpose of the stimulus plan because it discourages spending or is only result in more bankruptcies and debt.
jorgedug 3 years ago
If you guys read the fine print when you SIGN UP for a credit card you know they are allowed to do this, and thus you would hopefully be like myself and carry no debt on your credit cards. lets add to it that credit cards and credit as a whole are causing out of control inflation beyond what the average American consumer can keep up with. how many people do you know that could buy a reliable form of transportation to get to work or school without credit? its the same as the increased cost in medical care and tuition. if enough people will pay increased fees for services and goods the cost will continually go up. we are forced to live off of credit because without it we are done!
downforout 3 years ago
now lets think about a home... raise your hand if you would buy a house without a loan of some kind... how far back into history do we need to go before we find people who owned their own homes? you may think what "would we do without all these loans, how would we live?" in this day and age without change.. you couldn't live. if things changed we would could all live just as we do now. it takes over a million dollar savings for most people to safely retire. that just isnt right!

Some people don't make enough to pay for their essentials. Personally, I have around $5k in credit card debt after coming out of college and I wasn't spending on too many frivolous things. I kept a $0 balance until I moved off campus and started having to pay $430 a month for rent (even with 3 roommates). They really screw you in student housing, but the point is that it wasn't because I was financially irresponsible.
cg66079 3 years ago
I've seen what some people define as "essentials". In my experience, people just spend beyond their means. I've worked minimum wage jobs and still made it by. How? I just paid for what I needed to survive which doesn't include TV. For some it does. I made less than $1000 a month and lived in meager accommodations. I worked 4 years after high school and paid for my own secondary schooling. People just make poor decisions that land them into a position where they turn to credit cards.
Snapscape 3 years ago
For me basic cable was part of the rent in the lease, so it wasn't a choice. $1000 a month is more than I have made in any job I have ever held, except for this last Christmas season in retail, but now they let me go because they were cutting back.
They let me go as seasonal even though I signed a part time contract, but thanks to NC's employee at will system I can't do a damn thing about it.
cg66079 3 years ago
How did you end up in a place that forced cable upon you? I'm not sure how it is in the US, but in Canada most places don't include cable. You probably should've shopped around a bit more or gave yourself more time to do so.
I feel your pain. My very first job was subjected to cutbacks after 7 months. Thankfully I was only 15 and just learning the hardships of obtaining employment.
Snapscape 3 years ago
You can't tell me you saved enough to go to a decent 4yr school with 4 yrs at a min. wage job without help. It cost me $8k a year at a state school and that is only for tuition, books, and student fees. Maybe school cost less when and where you went to school, but the reality now is that you spend between $8k and $30k a year depending on where you go for a 4 year University.
cg66079 3 years ago
My schooling was for 2yrs $30k. From leaving home at 16, there was no outside support. The job I worked to pay for it paid $2 over minimum wage. I had almost $50k saved. The rest went to shared rent. I worked a minimum wage job on the weekend while attending and after I graduated. Up until I got into the field I trained for, I sacrified a lot so I didn't have to pay for it later when I couldn't afford it. Prioritizing helped.
Snapscape 3 years ago
I figured you only got an associates. That is the only way I could figure that you could pay for college after only 4 year of working even at $2 over minimum wage, unless you joined the military.
cg66079 3 years ago
My shared rent was $150. I lived in a basement suite with 2 other friends. My wage was $8.50hr and I worked 6 days a week for 4yrs. During school I worked at 7-11 for $6.50hr on weekends so I can have some spending money for myself. By doing this I saved enough for school. I received good advice from those who managed to do the same. My only expenses were food, rent, and phone. All shared.
