Jazz will never be Mainstream, yet, Mainstream has no choice but to move in the direction of Jazz. Look at all the young "Jam Bands" trying to escape from the black hole that is Mainstream. What do they play?? Mingus, Monk, Miles etc. And the kids think they're listening to NEW music...Jazz was there all along, just waiting to be discovered, like some ancient civilisation that knew the secrets of life. Thousands of new artists now playing Jazz. Because they're tired of POP politics.

i can see why people like this. because its creative. but to me it sounds like 2 out of tune and off key guitars....and it just annoys the hell out of me personally. instead of trying to impersonate a bass and regular guitar. why not just play it with a guitar....it would sound 10 times better. because all the notes would be in tune. IMO bap bap map doo be dap a doo bob a scraple dapple dee doop a dop a doo to boo moo she do ddodododododo doodle dop... whatever. Learn to play a guitar!

Good thing for her, that if she did do it she's young enuff to where people would just call her cute and not retard.
@alphacapo Strange comments. My thoughts: 1. Your 4 year old could not do this. Place a bet? 2. You realize that a lot of (esp. blues) guitar is about emulating the voice with guitar, yes? 3. A real musician wouldn't criticize other musos "game faces" (guitar solos? hello?). It's a good place to be when you look like that (IMO) 4. You really don't think these guys have talent? Really? 5. Skatting is fun for good vocalists - frees you up from text and allows total improvisation.
Brilliant! I'm not familiar with Kurt Elling. Thanks for posting this. Question: Was the original tune of 'Take 5' written with lyrics, or did these guys make up these lyrics? (Just curious. Been listening to 'Take 5' for years ... never heard lyrics to it before.)
@timwarneka Nope.. Originally written by Paul Desmond.. Performed by the Dave Bruck Quartet... Later, lyrics were written by Dave & his wife, Lola... It was performed by Carmen McRae in 1960-something.. :)
@DUBXXX nah, no way! jazz cant be mainstream ffs!! It would had lost all its beauty and point... let ordinary people listen to dumb music such as pop "stars" or whatevs... Much more of this will remains for us :) (sorry for my horrible english)

@MrJohnnysakai As is the case with most jazz performers, these two are from the U.S. Since they're "scatting", there are no words to be understood in the first place, just incomprehensible syllables. Two exceptions are (1) right before the theme (2:57), when they say "send me on my way" and (2) when Al Jarreau says "modulate" before they do so at 1:51.
@GoodPerspective Thank you for taking the time to point that out. What I meant, in a rather cryptic fashion I admit, was that these two scat so effortlessly and play off each other so fluidly that they seem as if they are "conversing" with each other. Not only that but they are obviously enjoying themselves so much that I was making the observation that wouldn't it be great if we could all enjoy doing that! Nonetheless, thanks again for your post.
