I think it's pretty cool. I've been looking for a while now of people who record to tape. with drums I mean. You could also get a better sound with a single Cad M-179. there cheep too. Put it in front of the kit facing down at an angle slightly. I think some beatles were done like that. or put it overhead and use the 57 for the kick! Nice playing man! What kind of mixer did you use? I wanted to get the 34 b but couldn't find one. but wanted to get a soundcraft 4 channel spirit mixer. Fat combo!
@MrJohntube12 Thanks man, this was done with ust a cheapy Behringer Mixer, has like 6 - 8 xlr pres and something like 12 inputs total , 4 subs and then the stereo bus, so it allows some crude routing so I can split stuff going to tracks on the 34B.
The 34B has broken down atm :( Cam belt was replaced but in the process of taking the head assembly apart I messed up a solenoid used for keeping the capstan pressed against the rear side of the tape at an even pressure... Continued in next comment..
@MrJohntube12 Also have a quarter inch 2 track machine which is still working, but the reason these early videos didn't have video was because I couldn't figure how to keep the tape audio synced to digital video, waht with flutter and wow and all that...
I think i'd have to stripe the 4th track on the machine with timecode and try find a way to have the digital video chase the speed variations in the tape audio maybe? Do you have any ideas? Would be very interested to hear.
@uberpirox Man I don't know about syncing Audio. It's always nice to know someone who can help with that kind of stuff. imovie can't do that? I dont know if you have a mac though...maybe you know someone who does though! I had a beheringer mixer. Actually my first mixer. I had fun with it. Recording gear is pricy when it all adds up.
I have the same drum kit as you (exact colour too) except mine happens to be "Performance Percussion"! It's a wonder how you've managed to get a really warm, vintage sound from what was originally a very shabby kit. You've inspired me to do the same!
@VasherBH He's not using the same kind of kit Bonham used, sticks, recording equipment etc., that's why you don't get the same sound. The cover is really great though.
The ole Vintage seat trick I see. I wish you had video of you playing your kit. It sounds good man! I see your old Ludwig Hihat stand? My buddie has a Orange swirl wrap 1967 Ringo star Ludwig kit. It looks as the same sizes as yours. But his tore up seat is a faded banana seat.
no jk he suxxxxx hardcore - this is really dang good the kit sounds bloody great you did a fantastic job - great tuning the kit really sounds pro, you should do more covers in your spare time

Then we're in the same boat it seems, my dream of a ludwig classic maple is slowly fading away lol, 6 years on this bloody beginners kit, but I still love it :) Cant remember the day i first came home when my dad bought it out of the blue after starting drum lessons, could swear that i could smell it when i walked htrough the door before i saw it :) good times
argh! I just can't figure out what you're doing with your snare in the main beat excluding your fills till 0:50.. you seem to make triplets or something, it's so cool!
hehehe It's fairly simple when you in the know ;) It's kinda hard to explain over youtube, basically just 2 and 4 with a ghost on i think the 3 & of the bar followed by 2 kicks forming a triplet between the hands & feet for the whole beat of 3 ( I think!!)
Not very good at explaining, ;D Much easier for me to play it than say it lol ;D
Thanks for the comments though, i won't even try to explain the last few bars of the main beat for the fills cause It'll take a 300 page novel :P
You may want to try a few different single pedals to see what feels better to you, try a few different modern ones and maybe a speedking too. I say that because the speed king feels very different to modern pedals, probably nothing like waht you're used to :)
Any pedal will work with heel toe generally it just depends what feels more comofrtable to you, I really really like the speed king but try around before buying so you're not stuck with something you aren't comfortable with! :)
Tama Iron Cobra / Pearl Eliminator / DW 7000 or 9000 series , those are all pretty well made pedals, Axis Longboard is another, just find one that feels comfortable to you :)
its so sick that you are in to zepp bootlegs like me, especially since youre so young like me, except you play drums. which is so sick. i know how to play this on guitar! haha, my band used to be called pats delight
Yeah I literally have over like 100gb of JUST zep bootlegs, some of which I've downloaded and forgot to listne to, so I have enough in there to last me a very long time since I'[m always finding shows I haven't heard before hehehe :D
I loved it.. Excellent job!! Just a question but how long have you been playing, and how long did it take you to get those bonham triplets down.. I've been playing for a year and am just now started to get the hang of them but they are no where near where they should be.
I've been playing (eek) i think about 5 years? maybe 6? I've lost track lol
It did take me a while to get 'comfortable' with them, as in able to play them without thinking of what i was doign anymore, to get them in my muscle memory.
I'm gonna say the borign thing they always say about practising drums : start slow and work up slowly getting faster as you get more confident, it really does work :) Then just be creativei n how you apply it in fills and during your playing!

Ive done the same with my drumset, it's a beginners too. i like it better with the one tom and the floor tom. by the way, how'd you get your snare like that it sound s amazing, and how tight are they heads?
They look better on camera than real life, trust me :p
I hate blue wrap finishes on drums lol, and also we purchased this kit new and a section of the wrap on the snare was completely mangled! Didn't return it or refund because 1. I loved my kit too much and 2. I couldn't be bothered to go through the whole process :)
That was AMAZING seriously every single drum of yours sounds almost identical to bonhams vistalite. Bonhams somewhere right now smiling over this. RESPECT.
It's just the line of cymblas they come from, i'm guessing the difference is that the double hammered were hammered through twice (by someone who hammers cymbals ? :p) which further refines the sound of the cymbal , the single hammered sounds gongish and rough, where the double hammered sounds crisper and suprisingly morel ike an actual cymbal :p
one question: how do you get such a good sound from a beginner kit? i know it may be good for a beginner kit, and recorded with a pro quality mic, but still, you get a better sound off that thing than the kits at southampton solent university's studios! (a Mapex Pro M if im not mistaken, with about a dozen AKGs and shures in a pro quality studio, with a mixing board bigger than my bed). Still, i digress, any tuning tips would be a great help thanks
Sometimes less is more i guess, this is literally Flat EQ wise if i recall correctly, I guess the tape machine colours the sound in a nice way so that definately helps too,
With regards to tuning, I guess it really depends on the song / kit and a few other variables but this was recorded without any muting or muffling for a nice resonant sound, except the bass drum which as the time had a porthole and a pillow,
Id say the best way to go for tuning would be to....
... Maybe look up some tuning how-to videos of drummers you thik have good sounding kits and see how they get their sound, I mean I haven't really tuned this kit for a long long time, I just tuned it a few times then left it when it sounded good :) However (Trying not to blow my own trumpet aobut this) If the playing is good, got a solid groove and vibes nicely, it will almost always sound good no matter how you record it :) Garbage in = Garbage Out if you get me :)
thanks very much, that has indeed helped, although the only vid on the 'tube is of this guy Bob Gatzen, who creeps me out big time, and also that Jeff Ochletree vid of Bonhams kit, which is IMO a load of shite. The owner of my local drum shop is a great guy though, who im sure will help. hes the kind of guy you go in to buy some sticks off of and end up talking for an hour plus change.
recording wise, im listening to it on a laptop speaker, so everything sounds flat to me. oh well...
Hehe, I Tried out the 4 piece setup a year or two ago since I saw a few people doing it, and just loved it, now i'm too used to it and my ride setup to go back to 2 racks and 1 floor :)
When i eventually purchase a new kit, I'll go with 1 up and 2 down =>
Single Hammered , Double hammered or Myra? I remembered the double hammered sounding a lot better than single and the myras sounded better then both, never owned a myra though
I've still got the same set of heads on all of the drums, except the bass drum, which i recently got a new 22" Emperor Coated in white for the batter, and 22" ambassador coated for the reso ( without a port hole) , sounds monsterous :)
Haven't done a major tuning in literally about a year or more, but I guess the resonant head is slightly higher than the batter, but I'm not actually sure my self, lol.
Also the heads are quite literally 3 years or older, hence the transparent beaten section in the middle :p
My Sound Edges are pretty nice, but I'm tempted to buy some 15" Giant Beats when they gradually wear out completely, I have a 20" 2002 Medium, but its a little too sharp for my liking, I'll probably end up with a full Giant Beat setup, 15 , 18 , 20 , 24 :)
lol :) Mine squeaks a lot too, but only barely, You can't really hear it normally, but if its a quiet part you might hear it creeeeeeeeeak through :>
I noticed I could hear Bonham's pedal squeak during quite a few songs, Houses of the Holy, Since I've been loving you, sometimes even just about hear it live (though very faintly)
But only on official releases during extra quiet parts, or on very high quality bootlegs :)
It does sound pretty good for what it is, sounds better on Recording than in real life I think, maybe I'm just use to how it sounds and don't appreciate it as much :p
I haven't got a working video camera right now, I tried recording a video with it, but the colours mess up horribly, it would be more annoying to have a video which keeps fucking up badly about 25% of the time, fucked up colours 50% of the time and then is only fine 25% of the time.
sorry :) But in the near future, hopefully I'll actually record a VIDEO! :)
WOW!!! You`re extreme!!!! I MEAN IT, you`re amazing!!!! You make yourkit sound like a very good and expensive one, without dampening!!!! WOW WOW WOW!!!!
Well this was 100% improvised with the exception of the intro and ending. to play something like this, I'd just recommend listening ot a lot of drummers and building up a sort of catalogue of licks and fills etc htat you can stick together to form a solo, along with learning different skills and techniques and just building up your creativity and improvisational skill,s so you can take your solo in whatever direction you want and know what to do next.
and in other news , its REHEARSE, and the real questio nsi when are you going to learn to play guitar, as in knowing how to count to 4 , and stop being an ARSE HOLE :)
Fantastic! I'm not easily impressed by a lot of musicians on youtube and you do a really great job. I'm 22 and I just started taking drumming seriously last yearStill got a lot to go but I'm getting better one day at a time. You have a great sense of dynamics with your hitting, which I think you show very well with the fill around :24 seconds.
Question about your two hit then kick drum triplets, do you lead off with your right, or do you go for Bonham authenticity and start with your left hand?
I've heard a lot about people doing them either way, I am pretty sure he leads with his left (As is apparent when he slows them down, check the end of the RAH moby dick) But I learned em leading with Right, would take a lot of effort to get them feeling natural leading with left so i just keep them that way :)
And thanks a lot ! Good Luck on your drumming journey :)
dude GREAT stuff its just like bonzo in 1969 i love it!! usually when i play moby dick solos its more like the later years.. but you play it like the earlier years its nice great job and your 17 i was guessing you were older.. im 16 lol
Thanks :) Just practise and stay dedicated and anything is possible.
Also for your comment above, get a practise pad! I usually play on a pillow, but it kinda sucks for rudiments because theres no rebound, so I just ordered a Vic Firth 12" pad which has a thread on the bottom for mounting on a cymbal stand or from a snare stand :>
you have a very good ear. at 0:55 the lick that you play is a carbon-copy of the version that bonzo plays on disc 1 from the zeppelin dvd. your tone and feel are excellent. please keep it up!
no problemo. for somebody as young as you are, you might be poised to actualize a rare gift. just be sure to keep practicing and taking advice whenever it's offered by someone whose opinion is qualified. how far are you from redditch, worcestershire (sp?), anyway?
you should try to work towards being a DW sponsor. you definetly have the skill

does the speed king pedal really help in terms of speed and double bass style?
im lookin for a single instead of a double cause the double is too modern and easy :)
if not this pedal would you recomend any?

You may want to try a few different single pedals to see what feels better to you, try a few different modern ones and maybe a speedking too. I say that because the speed king feels very different to modern pedals, probably nothing like waht you're used to :)

Hope that helped ,
Will

thanks very much, that has indeed helped, although the only vid on the 'tube is of this guy Bob Gatzen, who creeps me out big time, and also that Jeff Ochletree vid of Bonhams kit, which is IMO a load of shite. The owner of my local drum shop is a great guy though, who im sure will help. hes the kind of guy you go in to buy some sticks off of and end up talking for an hour plus change.
recording wise, im listening to it on a laptop speaker, so everything sounds flat to me. oh well...

hey why do you have a tom sitting by your shelves?
Ramen1020 3 years ago
Hehe, I Tried out the 4 piece setup a year or two ago since I saw a few people doing it, and just loved it, now i'm too used to it and my ride setup to go back to 2 racks and 1 floor :)
When i eventually purchase a new kit, I'll go with 1 up and 2 down =>

Single Hammered , Double hammered or Myra? I remembered the double hammered sounding a lot better than single and the myras sounded better then both, never owned a myra though

great solo, top notch! have you tried emperors? supposedly thats what bonham battered with but i dont know if emps were dbl skined when jb used them.
sticksbass 3 years ago
Thanks for the kind words :)
I've still got the same set of heads on all of the drums, except the bass drum, which i recently got a new 22" Emperor Coated in white for the batter, and 22" ambassador coated for the reso ( without a port hole) , sounds monsterous :)
uberpirox 3 years ago
Very nice. You got the Bonzo feel, unlike so many drummers. Hats off!

Hehehe :) Thank you ^^
I just received ~50 gb (12 Dvd's) worth of 1973 Led Zeppelin Bootlegs in the post, through an oldschool way of sharing live music, a 'vine' xD!
I'm so happy, but my hard disk is gonna be crammed full of music :>
uberpirox 3 years ago
How do you tune your toms? Is it same tension both sides or one tighter than the other?
ThyMercifulBovine 3 years ago
Haven't done a major tuning in literally about a year or more, but I guess the resonant head is slightly higher than the batter, but I'm not actually sure my self, lol.
Also the heads are quite literally 3 years or older, hence the transparent beaten section in the middle :p

this is great, one of my fave solos on youtube. sorry, this has to be done... This is gay,'Thiss SUXXXXX Travis BARKER 4evaaa!!!.
just kidding lol keep on drumming, your great
AllThatZZTop 3 years ago
Its all very much dependant on your preferences, and how you play the pedal (heel up/heel down/heel toe... etc).
But I find it excellent, as powerful as you want and fast enough to never leave the sole of your foot :)
I love it :>
uberpirox 3 years ago
really great! how long'd it take you to learn this
paulolemus14 3 years ago
Well I've been playing for about 5 years, this is just a mash up of different licks, bits and pieces I've come across :>
Apart from the beginning and ending its just improvisation :)
uberpirox 3 years ago
thats a beautifull kit. do you like giant beats or 2002s better?
Sendrand 3 years ago
My Sound Edges are pretty nice, but I'm tempted to buy some 15" Giant Beats when they gradually wear out completely, I have a 20" 2002 Medium, but its a little too sharp for my liking, I'll probably end up with a full Giant Beat setup, 15 , 18 , 20 , 24 :)
uberpirox 3 years ago
hehe using the same pedal JB used himself..nice..if you listen to the 1969 non-remastered version..of i cant quit you babe..u can hear it squeak lol
polock2112 3 years ago
lol :) Mine squeaks a lot too, but only barely, You can't really hear it normally, but if its a quiet part you might hear it creeeeeeeeeak through :>
I noticed I could hear Bonham's pedal squeak during quite a few songs, Houses of the Holy, Since I've been loving you, sometimes even just about hear it live (though very faintly)
But only on official releases during extra quiet parts, or on very high quality bootlegs :)
Peace
uberpirox 3 years ago
you can defiantly hear the squeaks in royal albert hall also

ledzpplindrms92 3 years ago
It does sound pretty good for what it is, sounds better on Recording than in real life I think, maybe I'm just use to how it sounds and don't appreciate it as much :p

Could you please post a new drumsolo-VIDEO? (not just a picture all the time...)
EILIVdrummer 3 years ago
I haven't got a working video camera right now, I tried recording a video with it, but the colours mess up horribly, it would be more annoying to have a video which keeps fucking up badly about 25% of the time, fucked up colours 50% of the time and then is only fine 25% of the time.
sorry :) But in the near future, hopefully I'll actually record a VIDEO! :)
uberpirox 3 years ago
WOW!!! You`re extreme!!!! I MEAN IT, you`re amazing!!!! You make yourkit sound like a very good and expensive one, without dampening!!!! WOW WOW WOW!!!!
EILIVdrummer 3 years ago
Thanks, lol :)

What's your advice on learning to play something like this?
WhiteCougar23 3 years ago
Well this was 100% improvised with the exception of the intro and ending. to play something like this, I'd just recommend listening ot a lot of drummers and building up a sort of catalogue of licks and fills etc htat you can stick together to form a solo, along with learning different skills and techniques and just building up your creativity and improvisational skill,s so you can take your solo in whatever direction you want and know what to do next.
Quite a big question but i hope that helps
uberpirox 3 years ago
dear uberpirox,
i was hopeing you would tell me when you are going to learn how to play drums.
(ps. when are we next rehursing)

uberpirox 3 years ago
Question about your two hit then kick drum triplets, do you lead off with your right, or do you go for Bonham authenticity and start with your left hand?
smajda85 3 years ago
I've heard a lot about people doing them either way, I am pretty sure he leads with his left (As is apparent when he slows them down, check the end of the RAH moby dick) But I learned em leading with Right, would take a lot of effort to get them feeling natural leading with left so i just keep them that way :)
And thanks a lot ! Good Luck on your drumming journey :)

check your inbox :)
uberpirox 3 years ago
dude GREAT stuff its just like bonzo in 1969 i love it!! usually when i play moby dick solos its more like the later years.. but you play it like the earlier years its nice great job and your 17 i was guessing you were older.. im 16 lol
slipdrum80 3 years ago
Thanks :) Just practise and stay dedicated and anything is possible.
Also for your comment above, get a practise pad! I usually play on a pillow, but it kinda sucks for rudiments because theres no rebound, so I just ordered a Vic Firth 12" pad which has a thread on the bottom for mounting on a cymbal stand or from a snare stand :>

uberpirox 3 years ago
you have a very good ear. at 0:55 the lick that you play is a carbon-copy of the version that bonzo plays on disc 1 from the zeppelin dvd. your tone and feel are excellent. please keep it up!
jofujenkins 3 years ago
Love that Lick :) Cheers for the kind words
uberpirox 3 years ago
no problemo. for somebody as young as you are, you might be poised to actualize a rare gift. just be sure to keep practicing and taking advice whenever it's offered by someone whose opinion is qualified. how far are you from redditch, worcestershire (sp?), anyway?
