  • Get yourself a 80Ah AGM battery for the deep cycle capability and limited gas generation. Much better than a wet-cell car battery which isn't designed for deep discharge. A solar controller for your panels to recharge said 80Ah AGM battery. ;)

If you're running that radio at high wattage (50w or greater) that cig lighter cable for power may not be enough.

I run a Yaesu 857D off a similar set up with two 30w stainless steel solar panels and a solar controller running on an AGM battery.

  • This channel rocks....

  • Make sure you purchase a DSTAR radio because you will be able to talk all over the world. You will be able to do normal FM as well.

  • @n2kto Ummm..doesn't D-STAR add about $300 to the cost of an amateur radio? Reliability through redundancy! IMHO, an amateur radio op is muchbetter off buying several top quality radios for $250 apiece (VX-6R is a nice option) than to sink $750 on that D-STAR HT with the gps mic. The D-STAR mobiles are expensive enough that you should consider an FT-817nd and have HF, 6m,2m, and 70cm. I can work all over US and W Europe with 817, low 40m dipole and tuner (on ssb, not CW)

  • My 9 year old daughter wanted to watch your video (not allowed to watch Youtube unless I'm present). She has her technician's license. She's studying to get her general. She said when watching your video, "Dude! He must have the perfect antennae for the 10 meter!" Whatever that means. I don't know anything about ham radio. She also said, "He should get a car battery because it supplies 12 volts and he could run his radio off that. 73's ."

  • @katzcradul Your daughter sounds like a very intelligent little girl... It sounds like her mind will make her daddy alot of money later on in life... You can tell her the antenna I'm using is a vertical solarcon A99 that has been tuned to 10 meters... and the power pack I'm using is a 12 volt battery.. You should get involved in the hobby to support you daughter (and you might even like it ;-) Its a very good hobby as well as a great tool in the event of an emergency... Thanks for the comment..

  • @USNERDOC thanks doc... been watching your travel vids... Tell Nutnfancy I said hello... ;-)

  • @radiobigman47 those yaesu's are very nice, but expensive... I just ordered a complete 2 meter radio (Radio Shack HTX-252) for $65 (S&H included) off qrz . com

I'm going to eventually going to upgrade to a bigger and nicer rig, but in the mean time, these will get me by... 73s

  • Did you say your HAM radio was 50$? where did you buy it and which model? Thanks!

  • @imigrantpunk got it on ebay, its a radio shack htx-10... check out my other vid on that radio...

check out qrz . com swap meet, they got some deals on there...

  • @offthegridsurvival

very cool! thanks for sharing. do you think this metal case would make it EMP-proof?

  • nice to see you got your ham license ...good set up on the panels

look forward to seeing you make them auto tracking :-)

  • @GatheringSticks You can come over and help ;-) as my technical level has not reached that point yet... lol... I wouldn't even know how to turn that manual tracker into an automatic... any ideas...

  • @offthegridsurvival I seen an auto tracker for solar on someones

site. Maybe Greenpowerscience. I do some looking and get

    back to you.

  • @offthegridsurvival

    yeah...check" theotherwhitemeat83's" Channel has a homemade

sun tracker on a sloar panel.

  • Congrads on getting your ticket! I just upgraded to general a few weeks ago. I need to build an "offthegrid" charger setup like yours. I'm joining my local ARES unit and am going to work on an "HF Manpack". Keep studying, I've been working stations in Colorado and Texas off of the 29.6200 mhz repeater on the Catskills Mtn in NY, and I'm in Florida! 73

  • @Gorntz Yea, I didn't even study for the general and wasn't expecting them to offer it to me if I passed the tech test... But I was 4 answers short from passing the general with no studying... I think a week of those practice tests, and I would be good to go... I really want to move above 28.5000 so I could reach out and hit those repeaters... 73 brother, stay safe!

  • Great video. Thanks for the info. I just did a video on vacuum bagging food amo etc you might find some good info. I hope all is well with you and yours. Kevin OBX NC

  • @OBXSOLWIND Good Deal... I'm heading over to your page to check it out now... that definately could be useful....thanks for the comment..

  • @OBXSOLWIND BTW I just subbed to your channel... I LOVE your solar-wind setup... Clean setup!
