groucho seems so cool..n i don see him laughing at other ppl's jokes..tough to make groucho laugh perhaps..i guess he only laughs to charlie chaplin;s work.
haha, I'm a child of the 80's and, for some reason, have been on a hitch of tracking down and watching old Marx bro's films and ealy 3 Stooges stuff... it really is wonderful. I can only imagine how much more enjoyable it would have been during the early days of film/tv broadcasting when there wasn't 1000+ channels and everyone trying to become a star through over-production of massive wastes in film. They all had to just be so beloved by those looking to laugh through the WW1, Depression era.
@KJTV67 It was considered vary racy for 1952, especially the last lady with the yeast cakes. When she says she couldn't a rise out of him the audience reacts so riotously because they are familiar with Groucho's use of double entendre and it has a double meaning in the mind of the audience of referring to her husband's erection.
@EliseAndreaTheWriter: Yeah, I noticed that too! Anne was a dream guest -- a natural character -- and Groucho was smart enough to just kept pulling gold out of the mine!
Seems to me that later chat show hosts did similar sorts of interviews with non-celebrities. Carson even expanded the concept to animals. Though IMO no-one was as witty as Groucho.
I consider myself so lucky to be old enough to remember these programs. I wish they still had programs on the air like these instead of the garbage they have on now that your kids shouldn't even watch, I feel sorry for the kids now days with nothing to watch but blood and guts and garbage. I'm proud to be 74, at least I have some good memories of something worth watching on TV.
How long did he milk that audience's laughter without saying a word? Awesome ability to sustain the crowd's laughter with barely a movement! A master of comic timing!
A world of thanks for posting this! Watching it has gotten my New Year off to a delightful start! This was FUNNY stuff, indeed! Groucho was a comic genius!
3 people couldn't get a rise out of their biscuits either.

One chief reason that today's shows are repulsive is the high definition shots of someone's face occupying 80% of the screen.

compared to the filth on our tv screens these days. this is so loveable.

I love his smile at 3:08! One of the first times I've ever seen Groucho loose his composure over someone else's joke!

That's good as hell to bust out that song with non-diatonic notes and without warming up at all. Deap skillz

Groucho got little publicity the day he died. He choose to die the same day as Elvis who had died a few hours earlier.

You said it nicoley! After each one of these "racy" conversations, I was like what? Seriously, the stuff on tv 2day is at least ten times worse!

This is SO funny and natural.Seeing the public of the 1950s this way makes one realise we are not so different now.
many thanks for showing these excerpts, really enjoyed laughing along with the audience.

You're welcome and thanks for the nice comment.
Though it's always kinda amusing to think about what was considered too risque for TV broadcast back then and compare it to today...
