Some cultures simply don't have the "long hair = beauty" ideal common in many cultures. Even in western culture I see that it's becoming more common for black women to sport shorter hair styles or the shaved look.

Alek Wek's beauty is totally opposite of "Western beauty", so people feel the need to abuse her. It's not right. I don't think she is ugly at all. I remember when she was on the cover of a black magazine, and she was in a white suit, and her black skin really stood out. Some Black Americans felt embarrassed. Why are people ashamed of blackness? I realize not everyone has to be "I love dark black skin", but why have so much hatred for it and the person who has that color skin?

Well I think she's beautiful. Her skin looks so healthy and almost sparkles. She's from the Dinka tribe, and they are known to be some of the tallest people in the world so she's extremely tall and thin naturally, not anorexic.

Well duh, she's not conventionally beautiful but her body is fit for a model. Secondly look at her skin, it's beautiful, it glows and great bone structure, a makeup designer's dream! Also, w/ her dark skin, she makes any clothes look brighter and you can see the palet at it's original form whereas someone w/ fair skin doesn't give the dramatic look on bright colours.fyi, You need the face to pull off bald.Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder

I love the way she looks. Her skin is so dark and smooth that it actually has a sort of reflective sheen to it. Those exotic features are just gorgeous... Her cheekbones are so hot. Her bald head completes the look, and is actually very beautiful on her. That tight, thin body is just icing on the cake...

I absolutely adore Alex Wek. Her face, her super dark complexion- absolutely stunning. I'm from Australia and where I live is a large African population. To me (the Sudanese particularly) are the most stunning as I admire how they are so tall and so dark- something the fashion world is definitely lacking. Screw the media's perception of 'beauty'.

A lot of these comments about black women with long hair and other euro features makes me sad. Black women have never been defined by their own ethnic beauty rather than by white beauty standards. First slave master, then men and now media. Black women have never had their own definition of beauty and their beauty has been deemed lesser. If they are dark, with short kinky hair and full lips that is seen as lesser and this is sad. ;'( Check out souls of black girls documentary to enlighten.

I mean, I live in Egypt and I see Sudanese women all over the place, but they never really caught my attention. I have to say that I am not crazy about her myself. I think Kenya Moore, Rozonda Thomas, Gabrielle Union, and Tatyana Ali are better catches. She has no hair. I can't stand looking at baldhead females. It contributes to the stereotype of black females can't grow long hair.

I think maybe that 'stereotype' is based on truth. Im black. I don't know many fully black people with long hair (extending past shoulders), we're not known for our hair. It's not a negative though, sure its frustrating when you know you won't see a beautiful black girls hair waving through the air in a garnier commercial. I don't think her having a shaved head contributes to that stereotype, i think beautiful black women wearing terrible fake hair makes does.
