An interesting point is that when the Home Guard was first formed as the LDV they only hoped for a few hundred thousand volunteers and they ended up with over a million recruits. Taking into account that few armies can ever field more then just a few hundred thousand that number is quite impressive.
me grandad was in the home guard at the start of the war. until he joined the RAF in 1942 at age 19, and blimey he told me some funny stories. they had a platoon sgt who turns out to be a choir master for a parish school. He was made sgt not only cos of his leadership skills but he his voice...a baritone voice, so he sang the orders out haha.
Did you know that the King once came onto a Home Guard training camp and was stopped by a sentry and he asked who he was, to which the king replied "Why I'm the King of England"
did you know in WW2 a british pilot was fighting a german bomber even though his plane was on fire and when he finally shot down the bomber ejected and was shot by the home guard when he was floating down, they thought he was a german even when he shouted at them to stop they kept firing, in the end he lived but he was injured more by the home guard than the german bomber that was shoting at him
i invite any comment, as long as they are clean in language. I invite good, bad, indifferent, and ones that suggest improvements, flaws, strengths, anything, as long it is clean, and somehow pertains to this. Thank you.
