Round Robin DNS, Server and Zone CLustering, ANycast (on DNS that do use IPV6), Conditional forwarding and Zone Scavenging Time-refreshers
He does make also one big mistake. Even if the DNS architecture is as simple as he describes. It would be most likely that MS Authoritative DNS Nameservers would crash first before a root server would fall
Behind each root server IP-number there is actually many Root DNS servers. They just share the same IP. So in big segment of Internet they have own copies of the root servers. The routers in that segment just uses the closest root DNS server with that IP. If one get overloaded, the routers chooses a new one to route to.
And wasn't Postel one of the designers of DNS?
But I say it was a good explanation of how DNS works.
The internet would "literally" not go down as Steve Gibson describes. Even if the structure of DNS was as simple as Gibson describes, lower level DNS servers would simply extend the cache expiry until the root nameservers were restored.
@kabewm u think so truly? tell you what, and google and research this b4 u blast me back plz i beg u, ...............3 guys, 5 packets, all it takes oh and maybe 18 -24hrs at the most, connecting frm false proxied ip's
^ SERIOUS LOLS. Time to put our helmets on, according to Gibson, as the fucking terrorists are about to take the internets down AND HE GAVE AWAY HOW TO DO IT! DAMN YOU GIBSON, DAMN YOU TO HELL!

this guy is a total idiot, i did not know it was possible for someone to be that ignorant, I am not an expert at DNS, but knowing the basics, I can say he is totally full of BS
Indeed. Anycast is a bit of a "clustering" protocol where there are literally hundreds of root name servers throughout the world using the same ip. 6 of the 13 root servers are using anycast. http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anycast As far as the hierarchy, the root name servers only store TLD's. Such as the following: .com .net .org .gov .mil .uk .us .il Long story short, not as brittle as he describes it.
@kabewm hey how did you managed to post a website on youtube i am talking about wikepidea website you posted. because i cant post a website if i try youtube blocks. me

This is bullshit because of

What he missed is anycast.

@andjack
Your talking about IPV6. Not all DNS root servers use IPV6

This is a good explanation, however it is now out dated since the root server hierarchy for DNS has changed since it was first televised.
Josemedeiros 4 years ago
No way. The hierarchy was always different. And Anycast has been around for years...
It wasn't true then and it isn't true now. . .

Actually I posted this vid to quiz a friend as to why this is bullshit. I gave him two hints:
1) Anycast
2) The hierarchy
He saw this weeks ago, but still doesn't seme to have an answer . . .
