Why does everyone talk shit about Americans? If you are British shut the fuck up, U.S.A has been around for about 200 years and we already have more money and way more power than any other country that has been around for thousands of years. Oh and not to mention British cars suck and land rovers are shit. The only good thing to come out of Land Rover was the defender.
Also I've thought of more things for your list of things that the USA has more of than anyone else; Ignorance, Failing education systems, gun crime, gun crime IN said education system, obnoxious pigheaded pride in a country that produces cars that can't go around corners, and you're still all fatties.
@clearairturbulance True Americans are assholes most of them being in the south. The reason gun crime is on the rise is because all these dumb kids listen to this rap shit and try to imitate it. Failing education systems? We have the best schools in the world. But what you are saying is a stereotype. As if I said all British people have bad teeth. And we also have the fastest car in the world the SSC SuperAero. And the Ford GT is top three on the Topgear test track only beaten by Italians.
@jdomes Oh, now you're complaining that I'm using sterotypes? When you kicked off here with things like "British shut the fuck up" and "British cars suck" You're right that using sterotypes is invalid, thats why I'm coping you by using them.

@sovereign126. Why are you calling me an asshole. I say one thing about America and you are calling me an asshole, and you are calling me uneducated? No.... not at all. While the cut may be superficial, infection is a major risk. An impact that produces a laceration will also leave a jagged wound behind, something that isnt going to deal for quite awhile. Once it does, it's going to leave a mark. No, you wont bleed to death, but god knows what that mat touched before you.
wow this guy is retarded, and know little about proper desert driving!, his example is on a simple desert track, and if you are to get stuck there... take your shovel, lay it on the ground and jump on it so it smacks you in the face!
First of all u need wider tires . When u think put get in the sand first deflate your tyres. If the car have 4x4 with blokable diferential its ok if not lets say like toyota hillux thimk about it but if u are brave enough do it . Check the sand where is white do go there , try to find a red sand as colour for drive if its posibile. if u get stuck put it on low 4x4 and easy start turning steerwheel left and right and easy forwarding . Anyway its better to have a shovel with u or a belt.
@Katoxy dontneed wider tyres at all thethinner the better i off road and thats whta ihave experienced that thinner jeep tyres work better the big rims
hes too too good with these tips,,, first of all while on sand be very aggressive and be fast,,, and he wants you to buy these matts that will cost you,,all you have to do is jus let the air out of your tyres to about 15psi.....and done,,,, u dont have to fill them back in as long as you r offroad,, it wont damage anything
Why didn't he try locking the diff'? I realise that he wanted to demonstrate how to get the vehicle out of that situation, but surely the first step would be to lock the differentials and see if you can pull straight out that way?
Anyone who goes bush should take a few things with them...better to have it & not need it, then to need it & remember its at home in the shed! Bar tread is ok but its not the greatest, its hell on a main road but you should use an all-rounder but more importantly, be careful when out 4wheel driving & remember to pack a few things: entrenching tool, ropes (11mm), hand winch, pulley, axe & water.
Carry that much & you should be right; great vid, love Ray Mears & Lofty Wiseman work, cheers.
It does depend on the vehicle you're driving folks - don't agree? Take a scion or a VW Beetle out and you'll see what I mean. AND the whole darn reason why the 50s and early 60s Willys Jeeps are soo prized is because they're damn near impossible to get stuck, even at low speeds and deep sugar sand - with regular tire pressure. Reason? The design of the vehicles and the design of their tires provide full time GREAT traction and power to all the tires at all time & GREAT tires.
That s a good solution. But I would also recommend lower pressure tires, as often found in many off road types in the U.S. The tires he has are great for rocky terrain or snow, but not great for sand. Also, in case you don t have those metal sheets, you can use rocks, branches, to get out of sand.
I agree with all that you said except for the tires being bad in the sand. In fact the taller and thinner the better as your longitudal contact patch is more beneficial than you lattitudal. Imagine running up a sand dune with your feet pointing out to the sides, then imagine running with them pointing forwards. Long is better than wide. The same applies with snow, thats why snow shoes are long rather than wide. ;-)
Yes I am telling you this. Why do you think the army uses tall thin tires in the desert?
I am an experienced desert driver and anybody who has good experience in the desert will tell you the same.
And as silly as it sounds, the less gripping surface on the tires the better.
There is a tire brand called sutimoto which make a tire called shahine. They are a sand specific tire which are tall and thin. The best type if you ask me.
I can see where your coming from, providing their is a harder surface bellow the softer sand/mud but otherwise I would say a deflated low level tred tyre would provide a greater foot print for it to run on....
Noetheless im speaking from the experiance I have obtained on the Austailan driving conditions... Its not to say my experiane is alid everywhere around the world.
@benlyons83 all the mudding shows i have been to and participated in have used narrow tires. all terrain 4wheeling use the wider tires, such as rock climbing. I am an Army trained desert driver as well and agree w/TINTINAD4X4
I have always been tought that surface area is the key to traction and like I stated before, a larger tyre that has been deflated will offer a greater foot print, thus giving you traction.. I have two trucks one with standard 31's and my other is sporting 35's.
They are both 4runners and have the same engine.. I drive on one of Australias sand beaches once a month and will bog my truck with 31's before my truck with 35's.
You are referring to "flotation" which is part of having good traction on certain terrains. Sometimes it's nice to have a skinnier tire that puts more pressure on a smaller area to cut through. Wider isn't always better, plus a skinnier tire will give better fuel economy on an expedition vehicle, running 35's that are over a foot wide don't do to great for rolling resistance.
No, its not that complexed.. If your tyre is hard it will penetrate the surface and create more drag causing the momentum of the truck to slow...flatten the tyres and it will float over it....
SIMPLE!
This is the only video on youtube that has comments saying other wise...
You are still describing flotation and I never said it was a bad thing either. And you ignored the reason I gave as to why most people run skinny tires on expedition vehicles. Tires over a foot wide aren't really practical in most situations but mud and even then there's an argument about skinny vs. wide. I'll go with the skinnies and keep saving money on fuel and tires, and not get stuck because they work just fine for me, maybe you need to examine your driving skills.
Sure he could, I'm not saying deflating tires is a bad thing. I do it sometimes, I'm just saying that you don't always need a foot wide deflated tire to run around in cause it's not always practical. If you wanna run on sand only then run some 12" tires at 8psi or whatever, if you are an expedition vehicle that runs on rocks, trails, sand, mud and street it's not always practical to be aired down on fat tires.
it would of been soo much easier 2 just take some air out of the tires...cuz all hes gonna do is sink in again when he goes through another deep spot. very unrealistic
So Land Cruiser, Defender, UAZ, Lada, etc,... its all in the driving not vehicle. Ask yourself how many times you pull out Sand Ladders+shovels, etc (risking injury) before you go through the "Hassle" of airing down before you get stuck. Anyone could drive a Honda Accord through that. Why you would drive in an area such as this with 40 pounds in the tires and a tire size mimicking a pizza cutter? This was a lesson in recovery, not reality. It was good for what it was, but not perfect.

Man you British people have the weirdest ways of getting un-stuck. Us Americans just jack our rigs up and put larger more aggressive tires on. Also we don't bother with week little stock Land Rovers we use good ol' American V8 Jeeps and trucks with more power then necessary and just use our right foot to get us out. Also Americans just don't get stuck. LOL. Not really
Oh you'll get stuck, even with large wheels and a powerful engine. Only difference is, that it will be so much harder to dig you out again. But you are probably right: Yankees seldom get stuck in there 4x4's Because you never leave the tarmac.
"Yanks seldom get stuck in there 4x4's Because you never leave the tarmac"
LOL. I'm a yank who actually DOES leave pavement on occasion. You are right. Most 4X4-owning Americans just drive around in their 4X4s to show off. They never EVER leave the pavement! NEVER! LOL (At least where I live.)
Northwestlondoner is right, I love Ray I really do, but when I'm in the shit I can never remember what he said to get out of it. Should stop smoking pot and retrieve my short term memory! :)
I've driven on Wet Sand already achieving those high gears is sometimes not possible without the vehicle becoming unstable. I had times had to switch to L4 to get going. Just a little note.
* use 2nd and 3rd gears only. '4th is to hi a gear to keep momentum and to fast.
* slight movements of the steering wheel Left & right to open a path for the rear wheels.
*DO NOT* deflate tires in the desert to travel 200+ km tire temp increases and desert sand in hot enough. on do so when stuck and re inflate when unstuck.
* use your gears to slow the 4x4 down to a "stop" only use the brake in an emergency, pressing the brake to stop in sand coz you want to get a drink from the back of the 4x4 if only going to increase you chances of getting stuck as it digs the wheel in to the sand and mack it harder to get moving agen.
I am sorry but that is wrong and I hope people don't belive him, I live in a place where 90% of area is dessert and this guy will get stuch and even his gadgets won't help him.
PLEASE if you are driving in soft sand deflate your tires to around 15 psi and don't drive fast unless you konw what you are doing otherwise you will skid and rollover very easy since traction is almost non-existant on sand.
hi didnt say any thing about driving fast, he said " you want to get in to the higher gears ' pull away in 2nd gear and get in to 3rd gear quickly ' but you have to build momentum' others wise the viachle will stop"

I have done quite alot of off road driving in the desert before and sand mats may not be the best idea in some situations, but in that situation its definatly the best.I keep my Landrover in gear 3 nearly all the time.
Whenever I'm off doing something a bit scary, I think to myself, I hope nothing happens because I can't remember properly what Ray Mears said to do in an emergency!

V8's kick out too much torque for offroad driving

He would have never been stuck if he had LS diffs front and back and a set of BFG A/Ts all the way around.

The trick to driving in sand.
* keep in 4H Wheel hub locks on
* use 2nd and 3rd gears only.

If you have to Stop

Delfate-Deflate_Deflate and don't drive fast

You don't know more than Ray Mears and I really wish people would stop contridicting him.

hi didnt say any thing about driving fast, he said " you want to get in to the higher gears ' pull away in 2nd gear and get in to 3rd gear quickly ' but you have to build momentum' others wise the viachle will stop"

I have done quite alot of off road driving in the desert before and sand mats may not be the best idea in some situations, but in that situation its definatly the best.I keep my Landrover in gear 3 nearly all the time.
go out and buy a set and test it yourself.

Whenever I'm off doing something a bit scary, I think to myself, I hope nothing happens because I can't remember properly what Ray Mears said to do in an emergency!
