The killer was another guy (copycat killer), not Jason. Jason only appears in flashback/dream sequences in Part V. Many fans were disappointed that Jason wasn't actually in Part V (the producers were going to have Tommy Jarvis take over for Jason in Part VI, but they scrapped that idea after fans showed disapproval) so they brought Jason back in Part VI: Jason Lives!

From 4-6 Tommy was the main protagonist and Anti-Jason. He was insane, but only because of Jason. Like one of the previous commenters said, it was Roy, not Jason in the fifth movie. Also, in the first movie it was Pam Vorhees who killed, her son was not ever suppose to come back according to the original creator of Friday the 13th but they did anyhow.

Ed Gein, arrested back in the early 50's, did a couple of the the most effed up murders in american history, robbed the graves of no telling how many, made clothing, furniture, out of remains.....Dug up up his mother. Talked to himself in her voice.

Field dressed a woman in his barn. Even lived to be an old man getting away with the whole thing, in an institute, where he was a friendly janitor. until he died in 1984.

In fact the way you see Pam act is a reversal of this role.
