This is one of Motown's best as this tore up the airwaves back when it was released and trust me everybody was s-h-o-c-k-e-d to learn Chris was a white girl! H-D-H worked this song. For real, dawg
@timmy841212 Right on Timmy. Too bad the Motown Brass were focused on promoting the other groups/artists . Ms.Clark had 5 Single releases & 1 LP released by Motown. Lots of undiscovered "gems" out there. Thanks to "nsoulchris", and a few others, the rest of us will now be treated to these "LOST" recordings.
what a great song u you dont get much better than this i'm 13 and lovin the era of motown and northern soul Xpinger please keep adding great songs like this on i truely bow down to chris clark what a song one of my faves
HDH had her sounding like a female Levi Stubbs(the Four Tops could have done this one)....She does a fine job on this, and of course you can't leave out James Jamerson on bass!!
Lol, wrong Clark dude. I clicked on this expecting the Clark I love but this is still not bad. Try Googling 'Chris Clark' and you'll get pics of our Clark and this chick.
I understand that Michael Jackson even recorded a version of this tune - even though this tune was a fantastic effort by Chris Clark, it "bubbled under" the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #105 in October of 1966-
I read somewhere that there were people at Motown who felt that Chris Clark wasn't that good of a singer, but she was closely associated with Berry Gordy - in fact, Gordy was infatuated with her because she was a tall, platinum blonde who resembled Dusty Springfield-
Back in 1966 my girlfriend bought this 45 for me after we'd had an argument. I got the message. We made up soon afterward. Great song! Badass then, badass now!
mnmcv1...r u me? lol, that is so crazy...i got that book at a thrift store and heard about chris for the first time too. I too went on to get the Hitsville boxes set and was awed. i don't know why this wasn't more of a hit! (Also, I especially love The Temps and "I Want a Love I Can See" on the hitsville set, should've been a hit too!!) Lots of great songs on there...
Okay ... this song rocks. And should have done far better than it did. Well, at least she shared the Oscar nomination for best screenplay (Diana Ross' "Lady Sings the Blues").
:( ...what...?

I must say I preferred Clark's Turning Dragon to this, but it's an interesting new direction.

It did, however, make Billboard's R&B charts that year, peaking at #41.

i first learned about Chris Clark in the book CALL HER MISS ROSS- had never heard of her before.
THEN I heard this song on the first HITVILLE USA boxed set, and I was floored...great talent...she was singing her behind off on this!
