A huge water treatment plant needs to be built where the river crosses into the US border. It needs to be large enough to clean the entire river of it's contaminants as the water passes through. And the farms and businesses in Mexico that cause the pollution need to be responsible for it's construction and operation.

Yeah it is pretty polluted to say the least. Imperial Valley is below sea level so the river flows north into California. There are high levels of chemicals from run off - I wouldn't want to get the water on my skin. Interestingly, I have seen large mouth catfish swimming around in it. One evening I saw a badger come out from across the bank and drink from it - ugh! Well it does need cleaning up. Both Mexico and the US together will have to make a whole-hearted effort to get this accomplished.
