Oh lord.....I had no idea crap like this existed! Some mysterious force actually willed me to download this and save it for posterity as a true living testament to the artistic folly of man.
Some rich daddy had too much money so his douchebag son bought a camera and some cocain, rented some hookers, a suck band and a dingy night club and forgot to throw the film away after utter failure.
Unlike most folks that remember this from MTV Basement Tapes, I saw this gem on the late-late-night video show Rock-N-America, hosted by Rich Ducommun, then Frazer Smith. Thumbs up if you remember that show!
I wonder if these guys ever caught flack from the producers of the PBS children's show "The Electric Company," since the song's refrain is identical to the one accompanying the show's "Spidey" segments: "Spiderman! Where are you coming from, Spiderman! Nobody knows who you are!"
I remember this being on the Basement Tapes back in the 1980s. People thought it was awful when it was compared to Duran Duran and Pat Benatar. However, when compared to Jersey Shore and Soulja Boy, Dog Police are gods.
I remember this! This won the first MTV Basement Tapes contest. Kinda makes me wonder what the competition must have been like. Nonetheless I love it!
remember seeing this on MTV after a late night of beer bongs. could not get the damn chorus out of my head for a long time... haven't thought of it in 25 years or so. damn you youtube!
Man, you can't help but laugh at this video!!! I don't know whatever happened to these guys but they left a comical musical gem for all of us to trip out and cherish!!!
I ACTUALLY DO REMEMBER THIS! DID THESE GUYS EVER GO BEYOND THE MTV BASEMENT TAPES? DID THEY MAKE A REAL ALBUM? THIS WAS '84, JUST AFTER WEIRD AL CRACKED THE COMEDY ALBUM MARKET, SO THESE GUYS WERE PROBABLY TRYING TO GET IN ON THAT ACTION. WONDER WHERE THEY'RE AT NOW...PROBABLY GRANDPAS BY NOW. WELL HERE'S ONE FOR THE GRANDKIDS. AS I RECALL, DOG POLICE LOST THE MTV BASEMENT TAPES CONTEST TO A GROUP OF KIDS CALLED TRAK. THOSE 80s WERE FUN AND, WELL...FUNNY...
The name of this band is "Dog Police" too. They re-released the album that "Dog Police" is on as well as a slew of other songs, like "1-800" on CD Baby....So now you can buy and listen to "Dog Police" whenever you want.
I doubt you could find it now. They were from Tennessee my home town in South Carolina ran an ad on a local TV station to order the lp back in the eighties right after they were on The Basment Tapes, you might try Gemm.com. It was on a local label.
I remember when this was on the Basement Tapes on MTV--this video lost in the final to a band called "Rail" I think there song was something like "1-2-3-" big hair, bobbing back and forth, all the hair band cliches. I was so annoyed this video lost.
Thank goodness for Youtube and those who post this awesome obscure stuff. This is what defined MTV as a cool station. Not sure what the hell happened...
i had this video taped off of a show called friday night videos back in the 80s...we thought it was funny as hell back then....my sister recorded a soap opera over it...shes lucky shes still alive...lol
So like, I guess these guys listened to Talking Heads, thought, "David Byrne sounds so goofy, but he doesn't sing about goofy things. I GUESS WE SHOULD MAKE A SONG ABOUT DOG POLICE NOW."
Thanks for posting this bastardang! I've been looking for this video (and any sign that this song existed) for a long time. I'd tell people about this vid, but could never find any trace of it. Thanks!
Ha Ha! William H Macy. I actually really thought it might be him. I looked it up and it isn't. But the point of the story is: I actually LOOKED IT UP! That's how much I thought it was him!
